If your not from California, and want a quick burger, try In and Out Burger. Good stuff.

I have a somewhat obscure recommendation for you. Look up Chago’s online for the location (its outside of the 32nd street Naval Base) and get a California Burrito. This is definitely not a fancy dinner place, but go there for a bite for lunch and you will not be disappointed.
I’m also a fan of Rubios for some really good fresh mex type food. great fish tacos.

El Camino
3023 Juniper St., South Park, (619) 450-6878
Mexican kitsch and chic live in harmony at South Park’s latest hot spot, where the micheladas come in glass boots. Don’t miss the sweet potato tacos.
Blind Lady Ale House
3416 Adams Ave., Normal Heights, (619) 255-2491
In one of the great culinary traditions, Blind Lady brings together fresh pizza and craft-brewed beer. Lee Chase, formerly of Stone Brewery, is the head of brews.
Muzita
4651 Park Blvd., University Heights (619) 546-7900
Throw away your fork and use your hands at this East African eatery that is perfect for a romantic evening. Every entree is slow cooked or sautéed, and anything they do with lamb is memorable.
La Puerta
560 Fourth St., Gaslamp Quarter, (619) 696-3466
Welcome to the bordertown saloon of the future, in which the West is still wild but vaqueros have evolved to a tapered state of metrosexuality. More than 100 tequilas are on hand: blancos, reposados, anejos and muy anejos.
Kitchen 1540
1540 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, (858) 793-6460
The alluring new fine-dining spot at L’Auberge Del Mar, is the rare place that can appeal to all palates – from the faint-hearted to the full-blown thrill-seeker. Traditional fare is made exciting; the exotic is rendered accessible.
Harney Sushi
301 Mission Ave., Oceanside, (760) 967-1820
The second installment of this popular sushi spot near the Oceanside Pier, was designed to be a “sexy, funky, groovy and alluring environment where people’s chopsticks move to the beat of the music,” co-owner Kirk Harrison says.
Riviera Supper Club
7777 University Ave., La Mesa, (619) 713-6777
Former Turf Club proprietors Tim Mays and Sam Chammas open their second DIY steakhouse in La Mesa, a midcentury mecca with more seating, a beefier grill, a separate barroom and ’60s decor galore.
Roseville
1125 Rosecrans St., Point Loma, (619) 450-6800
Located in a strip mall in Point Loma, Roseville is a little hard to find; its entrance is tucked in the back, off a parking lot. But it’s quite a discovery. This French-Mediterranean brasserie is elegant but not stuffy, the food sophisticated yet soulful.
Sea Rocket Bistro
3382 30th St., North Park, (619) 255-7049
This is what farm-to-table is meant to be. The green walls sport enlarged photos of farmers, red-leaf lettuce, mushrooms and a sea urchin diver. In short, a visual reminder of where the food on your plate came from that day.
Cowboy Star
640 10th Ave., East Village, (619) 450-5880
This restaurant and full-service butcher shop is carnivore central. The steaks here include grass-fed filets and bison rib-eye; there are grain-fattened selections, too, but all the meat is hormone-and antibiotic-free.

I second the recommendation of the Fish Market on Harbor Drive. Great bay view, also a view of naval ships at Coronado Naval Air Station. Ditto on the clam chowder. Fresh fish menu changes daily, but salmon always on and wonderful. Best French Fries ever. If going at night, prepare for a long wait on weekends. Can’t comment on sushi as I don’t eat it. I drive from Riverside, CA, about 1 1/2 hours to eat there.
There are lots of nice restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter
The Fish Market on Harbor Drive has great clam chowder, ocean view and patio dining, there’s also a sushi bar.
George’s in La Jolla on Prospect Avenue- The outside patio for lunch is great. View of the cove, don’t forget to order dessert. George’s has SINFUL desserts!!!!! *LOL*
If you don’t mind a drive and are looking for comfort food, head out on I-8 east, to D.Z. Aikens!! New York style deli and restaurant!! The matza ball soup is to die for. All desserts are made on site. The portions are huge-you may consider sharing. Everything is good. The menu is thick, making it hard to decide what to choose.
For breakfast their crepes are simply yummy, lunch soup and sandwich is always a good choice, but don’t overlook the burger section, the hot sandwiches and cold sandwich section.
I like the chicken cutlets for dinner, if you go between 4 and 6 in the evening you get the early bird price.
bon appetit!!
Enjoy our beautiful city
