I would suggest either San Diego or San Francisco.
They are both pretty laid-back diverse cities where you can go to the ocean.
Definetly don’t go to Los Angeles. It is pretty rough there, and pretty phony.
Northern California has a lot of forests and wildlife if you like that sort of thing. There aren’t any big cities up there that I can think of right now.

Depends what you like to do. San Francisco and San Diego are great urban cities to visit. They’ve got great nightlife and culture (I’m partial to SF). Santa Cruz and Pismo Beach are great central coast beaches with lots of outdoor activities. Yosemite Valley is essentially a city with great views all over and lots of things to do. A quick google search of any of these places should give you plenty of good hotels to stay at.
The question was: What is the nicest city in California for a vacation?
Not: Is LA the nicest city in California for a vacation?
Calling other people’s answers lame because they answered the question correctly is stupid. Really, really stupid.

That’s too vague a question.
If you want touristy things, you’ll have to go to one of the cities.
You may prefer our state’s many scenic wonders, Yosemite, the Sequoias, or the desert in bloom.
Narrow down your interests for more specific info.

OK since you posted this under Los Angeles and not San Francisco or SanDiego, I am going with Los Angeles unlike the 7 people above….I wish the San Diego people would stay in their own lame section

without a doubt, San Diego…lots to see, I would reccomend staying in Hotel Circle just off 8 (lots of hotels and great access to shopping and dining) the bay Hilton off 5, the Pacific Beach or LaJolla (the Hyatt or Residence Inn)(pricey lodging, dining and shopping on Prospect but nice)…youre close to a world class zoo, and wild animal park, Sea World, Leggo Land, Mexico, beaches and great golf…good dining and nightlife in the gaslamp area downtown, bay dinner cruises, carriage rides thru seaport village…perfect sunset and people watching in LaJolla at the seal preserve/lifeguard station just below Prospect ave…have a good trip

Myself, I like San Pedro, Calif. It’s near all the other cities but yet you don’t get all the big tourist crowds. It’s right on the ocean has it’s own tourist attraction’s of Ports O’ Call village and Pt. Ferman Park.
I’m going to have to say 2 cities in stead of just one because I think both cities are great! SAN DIEGO or SAN FRANCISCO. I grew up in the Bay Area but have gotten to know the whole state as well. Here are 2 links to the different cities as far as hotels & visitors info:
