If you drive from Seattle to Vancouver, BC, you don’t need a passport right now, but you will need your drivers license. It wouldn’t HURT to have a passport, of course. It’s a bit more like a 5 hour drive up I-5 from Seattle to Vancouver. And don’t just go to Vancouver, take a ferry either from Washington or Vancouver and go to Vancouver Island (the city of Vancouver is on the mainland). Victoria, B.C., is on Vancouver Island, and it is a very charming town that looks like a little English village with totem poles. You shouldn’t miss Victoria. You don’t need to ride a ferry to get to Vancouver, B.C., but you need to ride a ferry to get to Vancouver ISLAND. You should take a ferry ride, they’re incredible. It’s worth the trip just to take the ferry. I think you’ll need to take a ferry from Vancouver to Vancouver Island rather than a Washington State ferry if you don’t have a passport. You might need a passport to ride the ferries between countries, but you don’t need one if you drive between the countries.
If you FLY between the US and Canada, you will need your passport.
The quickest route is up I-5, Seattle to Vancouver. The prettiest would be to head west to the Olympic Peninsula (go there anyway) and check out Port Townsend (my favourite town in Washington) and Anacortes and the Olympic Mountains, the Ho Rain forest. It’s great up there. You can catch a ferry in Anacortes that takes you to Victoria, B.C.; it’s a lovely ride.
Don’t get confused by Vancouver, WASHINGTON just north of Portland, Oregon.
Have fun. That’s a beautiful area. I live in Portland, I should go up to Port Townsend for a weekend soon.
