Haha! I think you would survive–especially since by asking this question you’re already showing that you know what you’re getting yourself into up here.

There is a college conservatives club on campus (link below, and I also posted a link to article from our literary mag on campus the osprey that dealt with this topic and came out last year or maybe 2007). So it’s not like you’d be alone, but you will hear lots of people in class, on the quad, around town, spouting off their views. There are a lot of very dogmatic green party/socialist/uber-liberals up here, but there’s also lots of people that just care about the environment and social justice/equality, and love a good discussion about the issues. So if you like talking about your views, and you aren’t going to get all worked up because somebody doesn’t agree with you, well you should be fine. Also, I’ve met more libertarians here than anywhere else I’ve been, so there is quite a few conservatives on campus.

If you can’t stand to hear people yelling about ending the war or seeing tags around town about the animal liberation movement…then steer clear. But keep in mind that kind of crap is just as annoying to liberals as it is to conservatives.

But if you can handle your views being challenged (usually sincerely and respectfully challenged, but i’m not going to lie, there will probably be times when you feel out of place because of some dogmatic jerk that gives the rest of us humboldt liberals a bad name).

If you can’t back up your point of view, if you’re totally unflexible and unwilling to hear other peoples perspectives, and if just hearing people talk about liberal/green/eco-friendly/anarchist drives you crazy, steer clear.

I think you’re going to struggle at any college if you can’t handle meeting people who don’t share your political views.
