I only have one coastline to my credit, but it was pretty spectacular and unique: Highway 1 in Northern California. There, the giant redwoods rest up against a rocky coastline, creating something that looks a little like heaven. But even in the summer, the wind can be chilling, and it’s not the favorite place for swimmers. You would have to continue south to find the tan and sand areas.

California’s Pacific Coast Highway is nice. Go north. Once you hit the LA area it’s not nearly as scenic.
