Humboldt State/CSU Monterey Bay: Do Freshman have to live on campus?
So, my friends and I are maybe going to Humboldt State University or CSU Monterey Bay in California. We heard that in college, Freshman HAVE to live on campus, then the other three years you can do whatever, but it is different for each school. We wanted to get an apartment freshman year and for the other three as well. So, do we have to live on campus freshman year at either of these schools?
Thanks !!!

Just check the web page for each college or university you’re interested in. It should tell you if freshmen are required to live on campus. For Humboldt State, their web page says this:
housing
Apply for on-campus
housing using the online
housing application. If you
want to live off campus,
check out the listings.
This says you don’t have to live on campus as a freshman.
A link to their web page is below. As a college professor might say; I’ll leave it as an exercise for the potential student to look up the remaining college web sites and determine if that college has a live on campus requirement for freshmen students.

Neither of these colleges require housing for freshman. Some colleges will like in SJSU, if you don’t live within 20-30 miles of the college, freshman must live on campus but it is not the case with the two CSUs you listed.
Good luck!

Freshmen at CSUMB are not required to live in campus housing.

I like the idea of a study area. I am surprised there is not one given the inasncrieg residential student population. But even as a commuter (~30 miles), i would appreciate having a study area like 2nd floor of the library large work tables, enforced quiet areas, safe and accessible location. I do not have a good work area at home and I can get tons more done in the library. It is disappointing to get booted out on the weekend
No you do not have to live on campus. Housing is not even guaranteed at Humboldt for Freshman.
I am not sure it is guaranteed at CSUMB or not but it is not required. The only CSU schools that require Freshman who are out of the area to live on campus as far as I know are Long Beach and San Diego and even those schools allow waivers.
