it all depends what you like to do. there are plenty of beaches all up and down the coast.. there are the giant redwoods along the coast of northern CA .. there is monterey and cannery row which is the area steinbeck wrote about with shopping and the aquarium .. theres LA and sunset strip if you like watching freaks and winos ..theres SF with a lot of different attractions fishermans wharf china town etc… there are small secluded area such as dillons beach that have houses for rent or camping in a cow pasture no where near a major town. really just depends what you want to do

Well, it depends what you like! If you dont want 120+ heat, deffinately stay out of Southern California!
I would recomend San Francisco, Yosemite, Lassen National Park, and Lake Tahoe if you only have a week!
