A giant california redwood tree 36 meters tall cracked in a violent storm and fell as if hinged. The tip of the once beautiful tree hit the ground 24 meters from the base. Researcher Red Woods wishes to investigate the crack. How many meters up from the bas of the tree does he have to climb?

let x = height of tree from ground to the crack
let y = length of tree from crack to the tree tip
x+y=36; so y=36-x
from pythagorean theorem: x^2+(24)^2=y^2
substituting y=36-x into second equation and solving for x:
x^2+576=(36-x)^2
x^2+576=1296-72x+x^2
-700=-72x
x=9.7 meters
