I was born and raised in Southern California and I guess it would depend on where in California you are traveling to. Southern California (Orange County and San Diego) are mild the whole year, but I’d stick to summer for beach going. Some of the higher elevations can get chilly starting in fall and also will have snow still in Spring (Yosemite can be closed through May). Specify your destination travel and I’d be able to better help.
