Where in California is a nice place for vacation?

We were thinking for a place where there’s a beach, clubs, relaxing and low crime site. We also want a hotel that is really fancy but not too pricey. We want to stay there for around 3 weeks. So any City’s you would recommend?

San Francisco.
You’ll be near Vineyards, Lake Tahoe in case you want to go snowboarding or something, you’ll be about 6 hours from LA.
I would recommend San Francisco just b/c out of all the cities I’ve been to, it’s the best next to New York City!

San Diego the north end.
Most of the coastal cities are great. Get on yahoo or google maps and just start looking up and down the coast. If you stay near large metro areas, you’ll have more traffic.
I hope you make a point to see the redwood trees. There are several parks in southern and northern California. They are spectacular and a must see. If you stay in the Santa Cruz area, you’ll be fairly close to Big Basin Redwood Park. There is also a Boardwalk and Fisherman’s Wharf in Santa Cruz.
The beaches get warmer the further south you go, and colder the further north you go, if you plan on swimming in the ocean.
I’d probably pick the Santa Cruz area myself. However, there are just too many beautiful areas to really choose from.
