Is it like this or are the seasons different??
unconstitutionally I’m booking a hotel room in NY for March 27th through March 31st. The hotel we are interested in is Hilton Garden Inn on Time Square which is currently 9 for those dates. Yesterday, through a mistake in putting in the dates, I saw that if we booked the same hotel room from today through Monday, it’s only 1 a night!
Is it that February is slower than March so the prices are cheaper in NY? Or, is it better to book a hotel room two days before your trip to really find great deals?
Oh I see…well we have reserved La Quinta Inn Manhattan for 0 a night. We don’t have to pay until check out so I think I’m going to keep my reservation and a couple of days before we leave, I’ll check out the prices again to see if any have dropped.

New York is a popular tourist destination all year long, so you’re not going to ever find a "good deal" by coming during a certain month.
My guess is that there might be some sort of convention during the time you’ll be here, which is the reason for the price hike. Or quite possibly because the hotel decided to raise their prices, they seem to change their prices often.

A hotels main objective is occupancy. The more rooms rented the more they make. Short notice trips are cheaper because the hotel may not have been full or met it’s quota whereas a trip booked months in advanced they aren’t as pressured to fill rooms and they are guaranteed your money at a higher rate.
Also unless you want something really nice, try hotwire or priceline. On priceline you can name your own price which usually saves 50%. You can also choose a star rating for the hotel.

Easter falls on March 23 this year, that’s why the rates are higher during that time. It’s spring break.

What i do is as follows, I first book it couple months in advance, then I keep on checking every so often,
and sometimes I find the prices lower, so I cancel my previous reservation and I make another one.
I just did that in florida, I booked a partial view of the ocean for $299, and last week I found for $299 a suite with full ocean view..
so its all about looking and searching…
one more Idea, always call the hotel before your about to book the rooms, and ask him if he/she can give you a discount since you will be booking it right now,
most of the times they give you an even bigger discount then what you saw online, some hotels give them commision for it,
Dont be scared to ask for a discount, you have nothing to lose, they dont know you so just ask, you would be surprised how many times it works..

The answer is both.
Jan and Feb are slow months, things pick up in March and April (Spring Break).
Also, a hotel will practically give rooms away the closer to the day you arrive. They would rather make some money than no money on the room. The risk you take on this, is that they may be sold out.
