Drive down highway 1. It’s a great trip by itself.
Walk down the Santa Cruz boardwalk and eat stuff that’s bad for you.
Go to Leo Carrillo State Beach and walk south on the rocks, watching the sea lions and pretending not to notice all the nude sunbathers.
Go to Hollywood and see a movie at the Chinese.
Eat stuff that’s bad for you at Venice beach.
Go up Mulholland Drive at sunset, park and look at the city lights.
Go on the Queen Mary on a weekday when it’s deserted and listen to the ghosts.

make sure you go to golden gate park for sure! also go to stern grove in san francisco
I hope you’re taking the scenic PCH on your way to L.A. If you are taking that route, you are in for a special treat. Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Big Sir, San Simeon, Santa Barbara, and Ventura are all excellent places to stop and explore along the way.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is excellent. Nearby 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach is like heaven on earth.
You’ll have many photo opportunities at Big Sur with many pull outs. Bixby Bridge is a great photo opp. Also, stop at McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The falls are lovely. You can park along Highway 1 if you don’t want to pay the fee to get into the park.
Hearst Castle is a must-see attraction in San Simeon. Take tour number 1 which is a good introduction to the castle and takes you by the Neptune Pool, which is beautiful.
Visit The Santa Barbara Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Carpenteria Beach, just south of Santa Barbara, has the most beautiful sunsets.
The Channel Islands are great to explore.
There are many whale watching opportunites along the coast.
Ventura Harbor Village and Marina is a good shopping and eating location. Kayaking is also fun in Ventura.
Try to spot some celebrities in Malibu.
Have fun in L.A.!
