boxer pup question..ridiculous!!!!?
my friend has got a boxer pup. and he also got a new house. he has a small garden and its in the city. was happy for him so far.
then he tells me, he doesnt let his boxer pup roam in the house and he keeps it in a large kennel/cage.
and i am surprised because i have never heard anything like it. i have dogs and i keep them free in the house.
i want to tell him what i thin, but id like to get my facts right..
so can pups be kept in cages..? he takes it out for a pee and wee and lets it out for sometime..but its inn for most of the time..
feeed back!!

Sounds like he might be trying to crate train the pup…try doing some google research on crate training and see whta you can find.

No you can’t keep your puppy in a cage all the time! Puppys like all dogs need alot of excersise. Ask him how would he like it if he was in a cage all day and only let out to go to the bathroom

definatley not the way to raise a dog. I kept my puppy in a kennel at night or when I wasn’t home (when I couldn’t watch her), but to have it in there all the time is just cruel. I would tell him what you think and suggest that they give it to a better home if they aren’t willing to let it out.

The pup is being crate trained, but it sounds as if it is being kept in the crate too much. For young, active dogs the responsibility of having the whole house to roam in is dangerous. Puppies are insatiably curious and likely to get into trouble.
The Boxer will need exercise and mental stimulation. Stuffed Kongs, interactive toys, training and environmental enrichment are vital to have a well balanced Boxer when the puppy grows up.
I hope your friend takes his puppy to a Puppy Kindergarten which can help him learn to manage the puppies behavior and establish your friend as leader.

If he is crate training the puppy, then he is doing a good thing. It is a good way to housetrain a dog.
It depends on how he is going about it. If he is keeping the crate in the house and taking the dog out regularly to play and go potty, then its fine. If he’s keeping it locked up all the time, it’s a problem..
Check out this site: http://www.perfectpaws.com/crt.html
If he is doing this, then no problem, it’s a good thing.

No, this is diffently not good, puppies should not be kept in cages like that, they need to roam free and have excersise. Puppies should not be kept in a kennel for longer than the hours of how old they are a day(how many months old = how many hours). Hope this helps.

The trend these days is to "kennel train" a dog. All it does is enforce that the kennel is a safe haven for the dog to go when it needs quite time.
It is NOT to be used a jail as you friend has misinterpreted.
My opinion, your buddy doesn’t know the first thing about how to care for or train a dog. I imagine the next step is to chain the pup in the backyard while he’s at work.

As long as he’s taking care of the (large) exercise needs of his dog, and doing training work, he and his dog should be fine. I don’t let my pup out unless I’m supervising – she needed to be crate trained, and additionally I didn’t want her to chew anything in the house that she shouldn’t. So for her own safety, for the preservation of the things in my house, and because I want her to be totally focused on me when she’s out of her crate, I do crate her for much of the time.

I breed Pitt Bulls, and and as far as i can tell it is not wise to crate a dog of any kind, but he may be trainig him. but he should let him out of the crate when he is home, he can crate him at night and when he is not home (to keep him from chewing on everything) but just to leave him in there all the time is not good this type of dog needs excercise.

a puppy should never stay in a cage or crate all the time. just taking it out to do it’s business and for just a little while is wrong. For a puppy of any breed, they need a lot of exercise and companionship to bond and get friendly with people. crate training is not 24-7. it is mostly done when there is no one home to take it in and out to do it’s business. and l for one would never let a puppy stay any wheres without exercise and water.

Crates can definitely be over-used and that is bad for the dogs. But during crate training, pups can spend a lot of time off and on throughout the day in a crate.
I can understand him not wanting them to roam when not supervised, but if he is home and they are crated most of the time even then, that is bad for them.
Does he take them for walks every day? Does he socialize them in classes or at a dog park or by visiting different neighbors with dogs? These are some things he will want to look into so the dogs don’t grow up and learn to fear the world outside and even be a danger to other people and/or their pets.

you can put one in a cage but, not for the whole day and you should let them see the rest of the house! Anyway, the little puppies are probably very hyper so they need to let out their energy.

He will have a traumatized, neurotic pup. .the pup needs much more contact with its owner if it is to grow of sound mind and body.
No dog should be sentenced to life in prison without parole..Pups need the very same interaction with their families as do human babies. I suppose your friend will put his children in cages, too?

too much crate time is cruel.. he main goal with the crate should be to mold the pups behaviour for when he is older and will not need the crate,,,,, but overdoing will not help.. the dog needs free time in the house… obedience classes are highly recommended for this dog owner
my experience with "crating" dogs actually suprised me. I have 3 adult dogs (2 Pit Bulls, and a Canaan) and they each have a crate. i had never crated a any dog i have had until 2 yrs ago when i adopted Eduardo, who was crate trained and came with his crate. when i brought him home i set up the crate and left the door open on it. to my suprise he spent most of his timein his crate, and when he wasnt in it my other dog Avery (who was never crate trained) was in the crate. i eventually had to buy Avery her own crate because she loved hanging out in Eduardos so much.
when i got a puppy last year i bought her a crate right from the start. crate training was beyond easy, and it made potty training a million times easier.
i have seen dogs thatt are not too happy with the whole crating thing, but my dogs love their crates..its their own private place that is all their own. they feel comfortable and safe iin their crates.
…it is important to keep clean bedding and toys available to crated dogs. if you do that then the dog will be very happy.
