California Redwoods?
I want to see the redwoods in California. I just moved to the northern part of the state, where do I go? Where’s the best and cheapest place to view nature’s splendor? Can you supply a link if you know a good one. Also if you’ve been, personal advice would be nice.

If you’re in way northern CA, then just take HWY 299 W out of Redding and head over to Eureka. I also like taking HWY 36 W out of Red Bluff. Its a little used, slow going, scenic road that will land you on the coast near Ferndale, just south of Eureka. Both north and south of Eureka there are pockets of Redwoods to be seen. Eureka has plenty of reasonably priced hotels to stay in and makes a nice base for day trips both north and south of town. If you want to camp, there is no shortage of inexpensive and a few free places to camp, as well. My favorite place to camp is MacKerricher State Park near Fort Bragg on HWY 1. You get to Fort Bragg by heading south on HWY 101 from Eureka. I think Avenue of the Giants State Park is along the way, so be sure to stop and explore. Cut over to HWY 1 when you see signs for Fort Bragg. When you come down out of the forest and to the coast, you can hike up the coast (north) for miles and miles and miles. There is a light house called Punta Gorda that you can only get to on foot. If you continue south toward Fort Bragg, you’ll see MacKerricher State Park just before you come into town. Tent camping is only like $15/night. Town is closeby for groceries, restaurants, and don’t miss the Mendocino Brewery. Check it out for yourself: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=436

If you happen to be in the East Bay, there is a small town called Canyon that is in between Morgaga and Orinda. Most people don’t even realize that it exists, since it is so small. It’s situated right in a grove of beautiful redwoods. There is a small school and post office there. If you contact the regional parks district, you can obtain a free hiking permit to walk on the trails that run through the area. The land is a protected rain shed, so a permit is required. There is no charge for this though.

One of my favorites is Big Basin near Santa Cruz; however, it doesn’t contain the giants that most people want to see:
