What is a good vacation idea for a husband to take his wife for her 30th bday in California?
They have been married 12 years. She always plans everything. This time he wants to surprise her for her 30th birthday. It is on May 1. The clock is ticking. He has the days of April 28-May2 picked out and knows he wants to keep it somewhat local in California. They love to gamble, shop, and do the spa thing. But are always open to new and exciting things. Except for something life threatening like Bungee jumping!

A world-renown destination of healing and renewal, Calistoga first boomed in the late 1800’s. Railroads brought visitors by the thousands to breath the healthful air and “take to the waters” in the area’s natural hot springs. Calistoga today remains a center of wellness, yet also thrills visitors as a vibrant hub of relaxed elegance and wine-country sophistication. Trendy — yet friendly, laid-back — yet luxurious, Calistoga is THE place to be in the wine country. Come, kick back, and enjoy our wine, water, and wellness

San Francisco is without a doubt the most popular international destination. The place has everything… culture, ethnic diversity, views, architecture, incredible restaurants, cable car rides (it’s like gondolas in Venice), and a city set up for walking. It’s also just across the bay from Marin County and right in the middle of the Wine Country — including the Sonoma area and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south. They can take a day trip to Half Moon Bay and do spas at the gorgeous Ritz-Carlton. Santa Cruz is 90 minutes south, with an antique boardwalk amusement park (one of the best wooden rollercoasters on earth), beaches, artists, probably the most beautiful university campus ever (2000 acres of redwood forest and meadows), an antique railroad down the San Lorenzo River canyon to the beach, farmstands, ocean kayaking, surfing, etc. Santa Cruz was the home of Alfred Hitchcock, Zasu Pitts, Rory Calhoun, and others. Also the site of many many movies starting in the early 1900s. I think Santa Cruz County is one of the most overlooked places on the California coast. Monterey is great, but it’s always fogged in. Santa Cruz is at the top end of the bay and is much sunnier.

You want busy or quiet? Busy – like someone else said … start in San Francisco, and drive up the coast to Mendocino. You get the best of both worlds. There are so many cute motels on the Mendocino coast.
If you prefer to be down south, try Huntington Beach … close enough to LA, and yet not as hectic. There is supposedly a fantastic new Hyatt Regency in HB.

Palm Springs for an awesome SPA and good shopping and GREAT FOOD. Best Dover Sole I ever had. Most of the resorts have nice spas!
Lake Tahoe has many romantic or just plain FUN places to stay or hang out.
Wine Country is so gorgeous. This place has more variety than thought. There are incredible restaurants and tours with wine tasting of course. There are new tours that show you how to make your own wine. There are great cheese stores and so on and so on.
They aren’t far from Vegas but that’s a bit overdone. If they decide on this try the spa at Bellagio. They could stay at Lake Las Vegas though. It has become very popular. (Celine Dion and Elton John live there so you know its not too shabby)
Spindrift Inn-not sure where its at but I’m told its in California by a friend who takes his wife there every year. He says it can be pricey but it is so romantic and nice!

What about the “Avenue of the Giants” in Humboldt county?
You could stay at the Miranda Gardens cottages. They have fireplaces and whirlpools.
You can see the redwood groves, go over the mountains to Shelter Cove beach, go to the winery for tastings, etc. very romantic!
Napa- Wine,good food,spas,and is beautiful.
