Vacation ideas in California over the 4th of July week?
My wife and I are taking a week vacation over the 4th of July week. We live in the SF Bay Area and we would appreciate some suggestions on places to go that is driving distance from where we live.
We are mostly interested in places where we can relax and get away from the daily routine. We also need to watch our budget so we can’t spend too much money on our trip.
Since we haven’t planned anything, we need something that can be done on short notice. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been to Santa Cruz? Once you pay for the hotel room, there’s a ton of stuff to do. There’s the music scene at night – I’d start at Moe’s Alley and work out from there. Then there’s the wine-tasting in the Santa Cruz mountains. There are some fabulous wineries where you can taste for a nominal fee. There are plenty of places to eat for reasonable rates – you could ask at the places where you’ll end up anyway. The university has a fabulous, world-class arboretum – cheap entry fees there too. Then, of course, you can’t beat Santa Cruz for the people-watching. I suggest Pacific Avenue on an afternoon – you might see Pink Man, lots of interesting people, and maybe the Viking (but don’t look him in the eye – it’s bad luck).
