How far is it from Bandon, Oregon to the nearest redwoods/sequoia's?
I am visiting Bandon this Summer and want to see some Redwoods. I would also like to see Crater Lake and some big mountains. Things I don’t usually get to see in Houston. I’d appreciate any extra comments, tips, insights, anecdotes, you might be able to provide.
Thanks!

There is a GREAT state park not too far into California, near the coast, called Jedediah Smith State Park – it’s built in the middle of a protected sequoia forest. I think it would probably take you about 2 hr to get there from Bandon, and it’s a gorgeous drive along highway 101. I used to go camping there every year with my family and recently stopped there for about an hour, just to check it out again. There is a river there, with crawdads that you can catch and cook on the fire, if you’re into that.
Crater lake is going to be more like a 4-5 hr drive, I think.
If you drive about 30 minutes south of Bandon, you will hit a little town called Port Orford. It’s a cute little town but the most remarkable thing about it is this tiny little restaurant called The Crazy Norwegian. It has the BEST fish and chips I have EVER had and it’s a cool little place. Take note that it’s closed on Tuesdays. (I live in Eugene but my job takes me to the southern oregon coast fairly regularly and I always try to time my visit so that I can have at least one meal at The Crazy Norwegian).
About 7 miles south of Port Orford is Humbug Mountain – there is a state park to camp at there, but also, there is the mountain to climb – it’s not a "serious" climb but it’s a pretty hefty hike, depending on how in-shape you are.
For mountains, I think I’d head to Bend – which would probably take you 5-6 hrs for a drive… but well worth the trip.
As for the coast itself, I think that unless you want to go 3 hours+ to the north, don’t go north at all… Coos Bay and Reedsport are pretty dull and the coast doesn’t get really cool again until you hit Florence or Newport.. If you do head north, though, about 30 miles north of Florence is a tiny town called Yachats. There’s a restaurant there called The Driftwood Inn. It has amazing seafood chowder and seafood lasagna… and their bartender has a hook on his arm, instead of a hand. It’s a very cool place with a lot of character.
Hope this is helpful.
