From the north or south, use U.S. Highway 101. From the northeast, use U.S. Highway 199. From 101: Access additional park sites via the Bald Hills Road, Davison Road, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, Coastal Drive, Requa Road, and Enderts Beach Road (south to north). From 199, take South Fork Road to Howland Hill Road.

Go to the Sequoia National Forest and Kings Canyon in California for the complete Redwood experience.
It is true you can also see redwoods in Muir Woods near San Fran, but in my opinion you should go to Sequoia if you are visiting CA for the first time.
also go to Yosemite while in CA!
California and Oregon both have redwoods, a lot of them. The most famous redwoods are at Muir woods just north of the Golden gate bridge towards Mount Tamalpias. Then you can also see plenty of them anywhere north of San Francisco and in Oregon too. Avenue of the giants near the very north coast is great too.
