When is a good time to weatherproof a new redwood fence?
Are you supposed to wait until the wood gets to its resting color or is it best to get the weatherproofing on immediately? What product would you suggest?

red wood usually does not need to be weatherproofed, if you apply a sealer on it , it can not breath, also some sealers will make it turn black instead of graying with age, like it s suppose to. but if you want to go ahead and seal it , you can seal it the next day , or wait til it starts to turn gray which may take a year or 2 , to speed up the graying process you can spray it with water every other day, as this is what causes it to turn gray to start with, cedar is already dried when it s installed, you can use Thompson Weather Sealer, made for cedar, apply 2 or more coats, the first coat will soak in to the wood and the 2 coat will provide some protection from the elements, letting each dry before applying the next, pick a time when no rain is forecast for at least 24 hrs, apply with a paint roller with at least a 1\2 " nap, for sure don’t use any thing with linseed oil in it, as this will surely turn it black,,

if the wood is dry OK to treat,if fence was new best to wait 6 months. also red would though rot resistant.should be treated every two years or it will start to look shabby.there are a lot of good stains out there i like BEARS. just a matter of choice but stay with a brand name.you have to be good in the paint business to be a survivor.
hmmm red wood is normaly a natual weather proofed wood.
maybe just a clear thomsons water seal n a cool dry spring day
