What is it like going to Humboldt State? Living in Arcata, CA?
I’m thinking about applying to Humboldt State for my M.A. in Sociology but would like to know more about the school and the area. I’m sober so I’m not into partying – what is there to do for fun? Is there a gay community? Is there a lot of diversity? What are the pros and cons to living in Arcata? Is it affordable?

It is right on the ocean.
It is a small community based on organic/natural living.
The weather is mostly foggy and cold and breezy.
Humboldt is a school that focuses on Marine Biology majors.

Yes there is a gay community. Staying sober will be difficult…..it’s in Humboldt County after all. Not much in the way of racial diversity, more of a gay/bi/trans diversity. Arcata is a very left wing community…it was the first city in the nation to have a Green Party majority. Lots of retired hippies as well. Ralph Nader is a god. It’s fairly affordable if your loans cover your living expenses…the job market sucks otherwise.
Anyway I hope that helps you with your decision….
My brother went to HSU and has now lived up there for the last 8 years. He is a very open minded liberal that enjoys canabis. He LOVES it there and fits in well. They seem to be very laid back. There is a decent amount of homeless there( or maybe they just appear homeless, hehe). The forest meets the ocean is beautiful! The cost of living is not to bad for a coastal area. There is not a gay community like San Fran, but it is just as liberal. I know people who were not big partiers, but a little open minded go to HSU and love it. Awesome school. You should take a visit first. Good luck!
