The answer from Jude is exactly correct and you should take a taxi. There are public buses but probably not convenient from the AmTrak/Greyhound station to your hotel.
The distance is about 3/4 of a mile so you can walk it if you have no luggage and want to. Turn left onto Loyola from the station and go to Girod Street. Turn right on Girod and go to Baronne Street. Turn left on Baronne and go to Gravier. When you get to the corner of Baronne and Grasvier look to your right and you will see your hotel. It is about 12 blocks total.
I can’t let the BS in the first "answer" (from Thomas) go as is. New Orleans made the news since Katrina because drug dealers returning to the city have been fighting over turf, and the competition is literally deadly. The reduced population made the rate (rate = population divided by incidents) go through the roof.
However, almost 98% of serious violent crime in New Orleans happens within the illegal drug community (mainly crack cocaine) and the other 2% are domestic incidents. That doesn’t mean the crimes are OK, but the average tourist or resident doesn’t have to worry about it.
Also, the Census Bureau recently announced that their 2006 population estimate was grossly low, and the estimate was used to calculate rates of all types. The estimate has been revised, but the various "rates" have not been changed.
All you need in New Orleans to be safe is the same basic common sense required in every city in the world.
Hope you have a great time!
Going from the bus/train station to the Hilton would be quite a walk with bags after traveling all day. I’d recommend a taxi, it’s not that long of a ride and you won’t be fussing with bags on public transportation.
