How much sun does fescue need?
I was wondering how many hours of direct sunlight does fescue need. and also will it grow under redwood trees if i trim the lower branches off to about 5 feet of clearance?

at least "some".
No grass will be happy in dense shade. And you’ll probably have trouble in a spot that gets less than 4. The fewer hours of sun, the more often you’ll need to overseed to keep the lawn from getting thin.
If it’s a deeply shady spot, you might want to "think outside the lawn", and try groundcovers, ferns, hostas or other shade loving plants for a "shady garden" or paver paths, brightened up with pots of shade-loving annual flowers for color…
At least 4 hours of direct light or it will fail.
Raise canopy of tree at least 8 feet off the ground. You never want branches to hit you in the head.
Over-seed every year.
Now go drink a beer and relax.
