It would depend if you are single, have a family, want to own a home or rent, and what type of life style you are used to. I would say if you have a family or 3 or 4 and want to own a home you will need an income of more than $100K per year and most likely your spouse will need to contribute some significant income if you want to ever go out and have some fun. On the other hand if you are single and are willing to have roommates you could easily get by on less than $50K

Workers in the San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, Metropolitan Division had an average (mean) hourly wage of $29.78 [$62K /yr] (during May 2009, roughly 42 percent above the nationwide average of $20.90 [$43K/yr]
When compared to the nationwide distribution, local employment was more highly concentrated in 8 of the 22 occupational groups, including business and financial operations; management; and computer and mathematical science.
Conversely, ten groups had employment shares significantly below their national representation, including production; transportation and material moving; and health-care practitioner and technical.
See the link below to find your occupational category for comparison.
Redwood City is a working to middle class suburb south of San Francisco about 20 miles in San Mateo county. There are other such nearby towns that are similar such as San Carlos, Belmont, South San Francisco, Burlingame. The annual salary is probably at least $60,000 USD annually.
