Which types of wood are safe for a gerbil?
I’m getting a pet gerbil from my friend next Sunday. I want to give it some wood to chew on.Can someone tell me which kinds are safe?I just want to saw off the tips of a branch and put them in it’s cage. I live in Colorado, so things like peach trees and redwoods are not going to work. Are pine and aspen safe?

Pine is fine, and no red ceder. Red ceder can mess up their digestive system

Sounds crazy, but I have heard if you get wood from outside, you should cook it. Either put it in the oven on low for a bit or microwave it (put a cup of water in with the branch incase your microwave doesnt recognize it as something to heat). It is supposed to kill any parasites. The wood you get at pet stores for reptiles is fine too.
Ceder probably won’t work…it can hurt guinea pigs, so probably gerbils too!
Aspen is used as a bedding for small animals, so it is most likely safe.
You can purchase chew sticks from the pet store too!
