Where should we honeymoon in Mexico?
My fiance and I are getting married August 28. We are looking to go on our honeymoon either a couple days after that, or we can depart later, up to two weeks after our wedding.
We are looking to go on vacation for 6 or 7 days. We like to snorkel, dive, hike, swim, etc. Nightlife is fine, but what we really want are fun recreational things to do. Also a decent hotel, like the Westin, Hyatt, etc. I looked on Expedia, etc. and we can find some nice places in Cancun for less than 0/person including flight and stay at a Hyatt. This sounds good to me. But the flight is 11 hours long from Sacramento, California to Cancun. I would like a shorter flight if possible. So maybe somewhere closer to California, but still in Mexico. Does anybody have a recommendation on which city to go to, where to stay, and somewhere that doesn’t take 10 or 11 hours to fly to from Northern California, and that is not too expensive.
Thank you.

We just got married at the Barcelo Maya Palace hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We took 31 people with us and everyone absolutely loved the place. It was the 2nd time my (now) wife and I had been to the hotel. The first time was several years ago, we stayed at the cheapest end (while it was still new) and have dreamed about it since. When we decided to get married, that resort was at the top of our list. In the last few years they build an addition to the hotel and called it the Palace. The Palace is all 5-star. All rooms are huge suites. We even got little towel swan art with rose petals.
We ended up honeymooning at another resort in the Riviera Maya (Valentin Imperial Maya). It was really nice too, but it was no Barcelo. The Barcelo beach has got to be one of the nicest around. 1.2 miles of white beach and a reef right out in the ocean which makes for great snorkeling right off the beach. No need to go anywhere. While at the Valentin, we also walked to check out the Iberostar, as that had been another resort we had considered. Iberostar was very big too, but also very busy and lots of kids. Their beach was OK. We also managed to visit 3 other resorts while we were in the Riviera Maya, but none of them were as nice as the Barcelo.
It was absolutely fabulous and we would HIGHLY recommend this resort to friends, family or others.
Barcelo is a mega-resort, so expect a VERY large complex with lots of walking — but it’s not too bad. There are bars, pools and restaurants everywhere so the walking never bothered us. And on top of that, most of our guests just ended up staying on the ‘Palace’ end of the resort and never even bothered to venture to the other areas of the complex.
If you PM me, I’ll send you some pics from our wedding and from around the resort.
We HIGHLY recommend this hotel. We are already talking about a 1st anniversary back to the Barcelo hotel. Yes, it’s that awesome. 🙂
The Google Earth image below shows the hotel. The Palace is at the North end of the complex and is still under construction in this picture. Google maps needs to update….

Mexico is such a great place for a honeymoon!
One resort that I think you would really enjoy is Secrets Silversands. Secrets Silversands is a very modern, adult’s only all-inclusive resort located in the Riviera Maya on the pacific coast of Mexico so it’s close to California! It would honestly be the perfect place for you and your future hubby. The resort offers numerous activities and boasts an awesome beach. The spa is also absolutely amazing. I can guarantee that the staff will also pamper you beyond belief and make your honeymoon extra special. I hope you check Secrets out. You won’t regret it, I promise!
