As a botanist I can tell you there are three different kinds of redwood trees. They have been recently split into three different genera. This may help you identify the one you saw. However, symbolism may not be that specific. Sequoia sempervirens (The coast redwood) currently native from Northern California to Washington. Sequoiadendron giganteaum (Giant Sequoia) currently found in isolated groves in the western Sierra Nevada of Central California. Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood) native to the Sichuan-Hubei region of China; and a decidous tree.
Next, I googled "Redwood tree" and looked for symbolism and have given some links for your consideration.
