How, when and why did we cut down 95% of all the ancient redwood trees?
i can’t believe it. Who let that happen. Those trees are the oldest living thing on earth. They didn’t even use the land they just clear cut it all down for the wood.

The answer is very simple, supply and demand, the almighty dollar. It is more worshiped than the environment in some circles. We can only hope that circle is getting smaller.

The west coast forests were heavily logged in the 1800’s and early1900’s. Why? To meet the demand for the growing populations. This happened prior to enough people realizing the consequences for the forests.
Yeah, pissed me off too. I remember when I lived in Seattle during an election and the elder bush was there campaigning to save 150 jobs or something like that at the lumber mills…anyway I remembered thinking "tough for them-they can find some other way to make a living than running a damn chainsaw, huh?
