You will not be able to take your ferret with you to California if you plan on flying. As you said, they are illegal in California and the airlines will not allow you to take an illegal animal into the state. You could, however, fly to Nevada or another surrounding state, then rent a car, and drive into CA with the ferret. It would still be illegal and a risk, but it’s the only way you’d be able to "smuggle" your ferret into CA. http://www.ferretsanonymous.com/checkpoints/checkpoints.html lists how to avoid the checkpoints and to get your ferret into CA unnoticed. Again, it’s still illegal to have your ferret there and, if you decide to drive in, you must keep your ferret and anything else that might suggest you have an animal in the car hidden. Once in CA, you will have to continue to keep your pet hidden and not "broadcast" to everyone that you have one with you. NOTE: If you will be staying in a hotel/motel, it will not be possible for you to take your ferret along. If a housekeeper sees your ferret (which they most likely will), then you could be reported. If you will be staying with friends or family, then it could be possible to take your ferret along (as long as it’s ok with the person you’re staying with). If you decide to take your ferret along and someone from fish & game or a cop would happen to knock on your door asking if you have a ferret and/or want to come in to search the property, remember they cannot enter without a warrant. No warrant = no entrance. When they leave to obtain a warrant, find somewhere else to take your ferret until they are done searching the property. Personally, I think it would be best to just find someone else to care for your ferret while you’re away. A month might be a long time, but it would be in the best interest of your ferret to not be taken along to CA.

most major airlines won’t ship an illegal animal without the proper paperwork. even if they did, the animal would have to be declared once it landed, and it certainly wouldn’t pass that. as for whether or not the ferret can come, it’s best to consult the dept of agriculture for california and ask them specifics about the law.
