Depends on what you’re into, there’s so much to do here other than going to the beaches.
Some ideas:
If you have kids, go to San Diego, you can get package deals to go to multiple attractions like the Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and Sea World, a lot cheaper than Disneyland.
If you’re into beaches and that whole scene, try So Cal (L.A., San Diego and Orange County.)
If you’re into good wine and food, and general tourism, goto Napa Valley and San Francisco. If you’re there, it’s close enough to drop down to Monterey Bay, Carmel, and even Pebble Beach for a good round of golf.
If you’re into camping in the great outdoors, there’s Yosemite, Sequoia National Park, The Ansel Adams Wilderness, and many many more. All wonderful.
Whatever you decide on, you’ll have a great time!

Try Orange County-its an easy drive to Knotts and Disneyland if you are into it-otherwise I’d go for staying as close to the sand at Newport Beach or Balboa as possible. The waves are great. The walks are nice on the oceanwalk-eat at Ruby’s Diner at the end of Balboa Pier-you can even go topside on the roof for a fab pacific ocean view of the boats and Catalina Island way off. The Costa Mesa Open air Market (I think its site is Orange County Fairgrounds)is the best-walk it early on Sun or Sat.-eat great bagels-then if its Sun go down to the Marina for Sunday brunch with champagne. If you walk around Balboa Fun Zone you will have a nice time and can catch the harbor cruise for a minimal fee-its about 1.5 hours and they’ll tour you around the islands and stars homes there. Surfing, boogie boards and skating etc- along with the bods are great there.

California has a lot to offer. It has so much variety and beauty. Big cities, small towns, deserts, mountains, beaches, castles, farmland, rivers, etc.
I would consider Muir Woods just north of San Francisco. A strand of giant redwoods amongst a creek.
Skip SF ( for another day) and take the PCH to Big Sur. They have wild driftwood beaches with huge rocks and crashing waves. There are several hiking trails to the water.
Go more south on PCH to the Hearst Castle on the central coast. Hearst Castle is amazing.
Go more south to Santa Barbara. Visit the mission and go for a stroll downtown. They also have a great botanical garden and pier.
Then head to Zuma Beach/Point Dume just north of L.A. in Malibu. My favorite beach and it has big cliffs to climb and great views.
Go more south and skip L.A.(another day) and go to the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, San Diego. The best zoo in the world. Balboa Park is also one of the most beautiful parks in America. It even has a replica of Shakespear’s Old Globe Theater.
Then go east up into the nearby mountains to the town of Julian to try their famous apple pie. The San Diego Wild Animal Park is also nearby.
Then it is off to Palm Springs for a ride on the Palm Springs tram that takes you to the top of Mt. San Jacinto. The temperature drops 40 degrees on the way up.
Then it is off to Joshua Tree National Park for some great rockclimbing. The best in the USA.
Then head up US 395, pass Death Valley and Mount Whitney and Yosemite (another day) and head to Lake Tahoe. One of the world’s most beautiful lakes.
Then head down to Vacaville near Sacramento to the Jelly Belly factory. They have tours.
Yeah—-this is a long itinerary but I wanted to give you some ideas.
