Where are you going? What do you want to visit? What part of california? How long? Staying in Hotels, with friends, youth hostel? I need more information to be accurate. But a generalization. Metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, San Diego, and the San francisco bay area. For a week you need 6 nights hotel so assuming you can find 1 for about $120.00 a night $720.00 there. Food for the week which I would guesstimate at about $250.00. Rental car fee if you need a rental car about another $350, gas money, for souvenoirs how ever much you want to spend or on clothes same thing. Same goes for drinks at clubs nad bars. If you want to visit attractions, like Disneyland, universal studios etc. assume $50 just to get in and at least another $50 for the day.
I apologize for sounding trite but I would need more information for what you want to do to give you a better cost estimate.

You should not travel with too much money. Bring an ATM card or credit card. If you dont have those, get travelers checks. If your cash gets stolen or lost, you cant replace it.

It really depends on what you want to do. From my trips I have spent an average of $150 per day on food for two people, mind you, this was in LA. If you are going to a big city budget about 100 for food and then extra for misc. expenses. I would say that for two people $200 per day would be a good amount if you want to do alot of things and eat well. Good luck!
