Looking for a hotel in Northern California in the grand old style?
We will be vacationing in Northern California and Oregon. We plan to fly into Sacramento and drive to Crater Lake. I’d like to stay in one of those big ‘ol hotels – like The Overlook in the film The Shining. I’m hoping that there is something like this three hours or less north of Sacramento where we can spend our first and last night. So far a net search is pulling up nothing except corporate chains and small, low budget, privately owned accommodations. To elaborate: We plan to do a lot of hiking and camping. We have a lot of gear and I’m considering packing it into a crate and shipping it to the hotel so that it will arrive in advance. The corporate chain hotels usually can’t be bothered with this kind of thing. Privately owned hotels, particularly the more luxurious ones, will usually go a great deal further to please their clients. In addition, we’d like the ambiance of of one of the grand old hotels and considering that we will be spending quite a few nights in a tent we will be able to blow some cash on a pricey hotel and will appreciate the comfort at the end of our wilderness sojourn.

Consider The Silverado Resort in Napa. It is a luxurious resort with a golf course, tennis courts, and large spa. The mansion was built in the 1870s and is a California landmark. Learn more at http://www.cheers2wine.com/silverado-resort.html.
Another recommendation: A luxurious bed and breakfast in Sonoma County and my personal favorite B & B. Honor Mansion is located in Healdsburg and offers every amenity you can imagine. Gourmet food, luxurious accommodations, and superb service awaits: http://www.cheers2wine.com/honor-mansion.html.
Both of these areas are located in California’s world famous Wine Country. World class dining is available at multiple restaurants in both Napa and Sonoma. Gorgeous areas and a great beginning to a special vacation!

It’s out of your way, but The Claremont in the Oakland Hills always reminds me of that hotel in The Shining.

So you are looking for an old style hotel anywhere between Sacramento and Crater Lake, Oregon? I can recommend this place in Ferndale but it is closer to the coast than Sacramento. So it would be out of your way if you are driving up I-5 but if you are taking Hwy 101 it is closer.
Kathy’s suggestion to try the wine country is a good one. There are several good places there. I tried for something a little further north, given your itinerary, and came up with this Inn in Eureka: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32363-d602412-Reviews-Eagle_House_Victorian_Inn-Eureka_California.html
I have been in Eureka several times, and it is an interesting coastal town with some restored Victorian buildings, and this is one of them. It is in town, though, so you might not like it if you want big landscaped grounds.
I’ll amend my answer if I find anything else for you. Staying in a nice place after camping out is something I can relate to big time!
Edit: If the North Coast works for you, this is another nice place. Not so much grand as country luxurious. http://www.albionriverinn.com/about.php
Second edit: If you want to drive north inland, this is a very nice country inn (highly recommended by more than one travel writer) on the road to Mt. Shasta. http://www.mccloudhotel.com/
