Rational expressions, or fractions, as we often hear them called, can
also be called ratios. When you have two ratios equal to one
another, this is called a proportion. Proportions can be used to
solve a number of different types of situations or problems. I
often use proportions in my daily life, for instance, I was just on a
vacation to the Redwoods of California. I can think of three instances
of the top of my head where I used proportions. 1) Modifying my
family’s spaghetti sauce recipe for just two people, 2) calculating the
cost of the gas needed for the road trip, and 3) estimating the amazing
tall Redwood using our height, shadow length and similar
triangles!

1) Consider your everyday activities and think of a situation in which
you have or could use proportions.

2) Pretend that you are explaining this situation to your friend or
spouse. Provide some specific numbers and walk-through the
process of solving the proportion for the unknown quantity. Be
sure to explain why you do each step!

Trigonometry question – please check over my work?

I’m doing a review for a test and have the question: A forester, 200 feet from the base of a redwood tree, observes that the angle of elevation to the top of the tree is 57 degrees. Estimate the height of the tree.

My answer came out to be the tan(57) = opposite side/200 which comes out to be 200tan(57) = 307.97 ft.

Seems correct but would like to have my work double checked.
Thanks everyone for checking that. It really is appreciated.

Math is not my strongest subject. =P

how should i clean an all wood outdoor hot tub without damaging the wood, but making it safe for people to use?

it looks like some kind of redwood, like a giant wine cask (remember lucy & ethel crushing the grapes on I LOVE LUCY?) it’s hand made possibly from a kit,I noticed a silicone"caulk" type thing between the planks,it’s been sitting for a few seasons gathering leaves and all kinds of bacteria& whatever else, that i need to clean up without affecting the wood. PLEASE HELP! I WANT TO USE MY HOT TUB!!!!

Why is it that in a certain area of one species of trees, they're all the same?

Why is it that in a certain area of one species of trees, the majority of them are the same age? Their height, their thickness, etc is the same. (there can be other species mixed in, take for example: Californa’s giant redwood tree state parks?) Is that because at one point, a whole bunch of acorns or whatever had come all at the same time and started flourishing at one time?

What do you think about Redwood City, CA?

Hello. We are thinking of moving to Redwood City, CA. We found a nice house near Caltrain Sequiloa Station, located on the west of El Camino Real near Jefferson Ave. It seems convenient being close by downtown, grocery stores, shops, and restaurants. What do you think of this area? When we went there, we saw quite a lot of hispanic/latino people. We felt safe there but since we have never lived in such neighborhood, we would like to hear your thoughts, especially from people who have actually lived there, or who are familiar with Redwood City.
