Bacabal Mail Order Home Kits – Sear Roebuck Homes Still Stand Proud

This was, perhaps, the thinking of thousands of families who bought their homes from the Sears Roebuck Houses by Mail Catalog – a phenomenon of the early 20th century that delivered kit homes stacked onto rail cars to families across America. Between 1908 and 1940 about 100,000 families perused the architectural catalog, read concise descriptions of house styles and analyzed floor plans. Then, according to their family budget and needs, placed a stamp on an envelope and sent off for a complete kit to build their home from foundation to roof top.

Sometimes, the buyer would take on the task of building the home while others hired local contractors. Thousands of these homes still stand today, their owners perhaps unaware their bungalow, cottage, colonial house or other older home was assembled from a kit. The cost? A home kit could be purchased for a under ,000 and up to about ,700, depending upon the design and square footage. Today, many of those same homes sell for a half million dollars or more.

Although Sears Roebuck Company was the most successful retailer of home kits, it was not alone. A major competitor in the market was, not surprisingly, Montgomery Ward. But it was Sears that captured the majority of sales and left a lasting mark on real estate across America. Some analysts say it was the company’s attention to detail and quality that kept it in front of its competitors. In 1918, a Sears’ marketing piece promised “the customer must be satisfied for a lifetime for every house we sell is a standing advertisement for Sears Roebuck and Company.”

Part of this satisfaction came with the efficient way the Sears kits were assembled and presented. In the early 1900s, carpenters and home builders did not have the advantage of today’s power tools. Most people were not educated in reading architectural plans, nor experienced in construction. Sears pre-cut all the lumber for the homes and made instructions easy to follow. Since most buyers were intimately involved in the construction of their kit home, there was a special pride in hands-on ownership.

After the Great Depression, Sears offered an even more complete package to customers by including financing. By then, the company was deep into lumber mills and other industries that supported its housing venture. By 1940, the burden of manufacturing and financing – and the impact of WWII – saw the last of the Book of Modern Homes. Times changed and Sear Roebuck changed with them. The company never kept an inventory of the homes it sold so many people who own houses from the early decades of the 20th century may be unaware of their home’s humble, mail order origin.

I just got back from a weekend trip out to the West Coast and I LOVED the Bay Area, even with this rare rain storm that will be gone by Thursday.

The nation’s friendliest people, I love the steep up and down streets, great food, ALMOST always great weather, 2 hours from snow ski resorts, 2 hours from Desert, 1 hour from vineyards, 2 hours from Gigantic redwood trees, Marin County was AWESOME, Berkeley speaks for itself, work ANY job low-skill or high-skilled and you get 100% of the amenities just like that!

This city is incredible, if I were jobless I’d find a way to the Bay Area, I’d dumpster dive, live on Telegraph Street Berkeley, get 50 people together to share a car.

This would be challenging and adventurous, and WAYYY more fun than sitting in some crappy East Coast town whining that the economy sucks.

Because in the Bay Area, a lot of what makes life good is what the natural earth has to provide, you know….the stuff that doesn’t cost money but instead results in higher real estate costs. BUT…if you share housing together with lots of people, it’s the BEST deal in the world!!!
and now I’m dying for a Ghirardelli Cable Car Rocky Road Ice Cream Sundae and can’t believe the whole Northeastern USA has not one SHOP! Not even NEW YORK has it!

So you’ve decided that it’s time for you to take your very first fly fishing trip.  You’ve been practicing your casting and you’ve got all your flies ready to land a big fish.  What do you need to think about when planning this fly fishing trip?

The first thing to decide is where to go.  There are many, many excellent places to hone your fly fishing skills at.  Some great locations to consider are Washington state, Oregon, Northern California, Texas, and the Great Lakes region.  Pick a place that is readily accessible for you and that won’t break the bank when it comes time to pay for it.

If adventure is your game, look into taking a Canadian fly fishing trip.  Most of the best fishing in Canada can be found in remote mountain lakes and streams with lodges only accessible by air or train.  Most of the lodges will offer you trained guides to lead you to the fishing spots and transportation is included in the price of your stay.  We’ve even seen one lodge that will give you use of its cabin and you are left on your own in the wilderness.  This can be an amazingly liberating adventure!

You can also combine your fly fishing with other things while on a trip.  Think about where friends and family live.  Can you spend a little time fishing and then, in your downtime, do a little visiting?  Is there someplace you’ve always wanted to visit but never really had a reason why?  Try taking a fly fishing trip there.

There are so many beautiful destinations you can go to when you want to take a trip to do some fly fishing.  Pick one, plan well, and then just enjoy.  You’ll be opening up a whole new world to yourself on a trip like this.  And, you might just bring home some prized fish as proof of your prowess.  Then you can start planning another trip!

Regarded as one of the oldest teams in baseball history, the San Francisco Giants got their start in New York City where they played from their established time of 1883 to 1957. When the franchise moved to California, their name changed to the San Francisco Giants. Playing as the New York Giants, the team won five World Series championships and 17 pennants. Ironically, the San Francisco Giants have not won a World Series since 1954, before their move to San Francisco. They have, however, won a total of 20 National League Pennants, including most recent three won in San Francisco in 2000, 1989 and 1962.

Interestingly enough, although the Giants made some really memorable history during their tenure in New York City, the last few years of their franchise history in the city were not very memorable at all. As a matter of fact, the Giants slipped to third place and the fans seemed to wax not quite as interested as attendance fell down as well during this time. Although objections were lodged, in the summer of 1957 both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants made historic relocations of their franchises to California. Upon successful relocation, the San Francisco Giants began creating history for the team in their new location.

The all brother outfield in 1963 came when brothers Jesus, Matty and Felipe Alou created the first all brother outfield in the Major League Baseball industry. Gaylord Perry pitched a no hitter in 1968 but Perry was one of many players who met with greater success after leaving the Giants. Other such players included George Foster, Garry Maddox and Dave Kingman. John Montefusco and Gary Matthews were honored with the Rookie of the Year award in 1975 and 1973 respectively.

More changes continued as Bob Lurie purchased the Giants in 1976 to keep the franchise from being relocated to Toronto. There were not any noteworthy successes that came to the Giants as they finished out the 70’s. By 1981, Frank Robinson was hired to be the Giants manager and went into the record books for being the first black man in the National League to manage a NL franchise. Although Robinson only stayed in the position for a few years, the team faired moderately due to the strike that shortened the season. By the end of the 80’s, the Giants were recipients of the National League Pennant thanks to the efforts of players like Rick Reuschel, who won the 1989 National League All-Star Game Starter award and National League ERA champion Scott Garrelts.

The 90’s produced some good seasons with players like Barry Bonds, Kirk Reuter and Jeff Kent having remarkable games and taking the Giants into an NL Wild card against the Chicago Cubs in 1998.

AT&T Park is the current home of the San Francisco Giants and has been known by two other names since it was first constructed and opened. Located at 24 Willie Mays Plaza in San Francisco, California, on March 31, 2000, the park was originally named Pacific Bell Park and held the name until 2003. The following year in 2004, the venue’s name was changed to SBC Park and stayed that way for a year. Two years later, the stadium was renamed AT&T Park. Seating capacity has increased over the years from 40,930 upon opening in 2000 to 41,915 in 2010 not including 1,500 standing room capacity slots.
