The busy lifestyles of homeowners along with a strong desire for outdoor living space has created a demand for new products that are low maintenance yet have a unique and natural wood-like appearance.

Increasingly, people have a new attitude toward decking boards and are breaking away from traditional wood choices, although wood decks are still very popular. This is especially true when people consider adding an outdoor extension to their indoor living space. They may want an indoor-like appearance and functionality in this new outdoor area. Others are more conscious of the improvement in their homes resale value and the durability of composite decking planks is a selling feature.

There are few types of home improvements that can equal the enhancing effect of wood or composite decking. For providing outdoor leisure and a break from the stress of everyday life for adults, or for creating a fun play area for children, decks expand your home living space into the fresh air space of your backyard. Pool decks, rooftop decks, and patio decks offer unique enjoyable outdoor living space for entertaining, relaxation, sun bathing, and even al fresco dining. Decking is an underappreciated home addition.

Many homeowners don’t realize how these different types of decks can add to the quality of their family’s lives. The offer a private area for teenagers who need a break from the crowded environment at school, where they can read or study and yet not feel confined in their small bedroom. For adults, decks allow a restful place to listen to wind breezes, and an elevated view of their property or the neighborhood, or just a spot to relax safely and comfortably by the swimming pool. Rather than dreaming about and funding that expensive trip to the cottage every year, you have an opportunity to create your cottage type atmosphere right at home. And, you’ll be able to enjoy your deck at least one half of the year. It’s an investment you’ll get good use of.

The last few years have seen strong growth in deck building. Natural wood deck products are still being advertised and sold. Pine, cedar and spruce are the traditional choices for decks. Wood has strong acceptance as the ideal deck material and many people give little thought to a wood alternative. That is, unless the qualities of composite decking are discussed. Given the modern homeowner’s preference for easy of maintenance and durability, wood decking may not be the best choice for them and the new composite materials have features they value.

This isn’t to say that wood decking doesn’t have its advantages. However, if a home deck isn’t well-maintained, it will have to repaired and refinished and not many homeowners have the funds, time and energy to handle that project every couple of years. If you’re considering deck building this summer or fall, give some extra time to studying the value of composite decks. It may just save you a lot of time during the years ahead and give you a deck that is clean, modern, and durable.

Composite Deck Materials

Composite deck materials are enjoying increasing demand despite the fact their price is higher than wood decking. Composite decking from leading manufacturers such as LP WeatherBest, utilize a composite of plastics and wood so that they look like wood decking, but don’t require treatment. There’s no need to stain, seal, or paint the decking lumber because the color is built in during the manufacturing process and runs right through the composite planks.

In terms of cleanliness, composite deck planks don’t allow dirt and mold to take to get in and take hold like they can with natural wood. Composite deck boards have been tested for mold buildup, which you know is not good for your health, and especially your children’s health, and the tests showed very little mold present. LP WeatherBest composite decks scored the highest rating for mold resistance.

Composite decks can be pressure spray washed without wearing off the finish. Wood decks may suffer from such washings and they’ll need to be washed more frequently. When wood decks split or check, there are numerous areas where dirt can get trapped and it is difficult to wash it out. This adds to a deck’s maintenance costs.

Cost of Deck Installation

Although the initial cost is somewhat higher than wood decking materials, you’re probably making a serious investment in your deck, so you’ll want quality materials. The installed cost of a large, multilevel deck, especially a raised deck, is high and maintenance costs would be high.

Composite deck planks have high density polyethylene creating a denser, stronger and more resilient material. That means there will be less maintenance required over time. The composite plank is manufactured with high pressure and high heat extrusion and the natural wood surface appearance is brushed on or embossed into the boards. Homeowners see a surface that is surprisingly attractive and has a rich, embossed appearance that lasts and lasts.

Composite planks also cut, nail and drill just as wood planks can be. You get all the benefits of real wood deck material but without the negatives such as splitting, checking, twisting, rot, mildew, mold buildup, and faded color. Premium decking packages are available and boards come in wood styles such as cedar, redwood, walnut and driftwood grey. There are two surfaces on the board; one a smooth surface and the natural-appearing roughsawn pattern.

Trends in Decking

Composite decking materials have a gained a 4% growth in marketshare over their wood deck competition. Sales of synthetic deck materials have doubled since 2000 and sales are expected to grow over 20% each year until at least 2009.

Major manufacturers of composite decks are; LP WeatherBest, Trex, Timbertech, US Plastic Lumber, Nexwood, Kadant, Universal Forest Products, Correctdeck, CrossTimbers, Kroy Building Products, CPI Plastics, Thermal Industries, Decklock, Bearboard, Procell, and PlasticBoards.

There is a huge range of products available and each comes with their own limitations and design issues. Along with a great composite decking product, you’ll want to buy your planks from a reputable manufacturer that offers good post sales support and service. The warranty on these composite products is a great advantage to homeowners, but the manufacturer still has to honor the warranty as you would expect. LP WeatherBest is one of the dominant names in decking and deck railing products.

Deck Railings

There are providers of outstanding deck railings in the states of New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire that you can rely on for premium deck building products and great support. Buy from lumber yards and retailers that carry products from reliable distributors.

Six Flags Marine World is known as not just an amusement park, but also an animal park. The park offers a wide variety of roller coasters as well as some more traditional amusement rides. When visitors are done with the rides they can then enjoy animal exhibits as well as shows that feature the parks animals. Six Flags Marine World is in a league of its own, partially because there is great care and attention paid to ensure this, but also because there is simply nothing to compare the theme park to. Marine World is in the business of entertaining, providing a fun environment, and putting together a little bit of everything that people love to see.

Marine World began as a nonprofit animal park in Redwood City, California in 1968. In 1985 the park relocated about 55 miles away to Vallejo, California and thought the move necessitated a name change to Marine World Africa USA. The old location became known as Redwood Shores. In 1996 after losing money and poor profits since it’s move in 1985, Six Flags purchased the park at which time the park attendance grew. Six Flags added some theme park attractions that were not related to animals such as the roller coasters to draw in bigger crowds. Over the first few years Six Flags Inc. added several major roller coasters, putting the park more in like with the Six Flags line of parks and so the parks name was then changed to Six Flags Marine World. Premier, now known as Six Flags owned the park for several years before adding the Six Flags name to the park name.

The park has not abandoned its animal roots. The park continues to add animals, exhibits, and improve existing exhibits to make the park more attractive and visitor friendly. It’s true that the park has become not just an animal park, but also an amusement park. Six Flags added huge roller coasters such as Medusa, Vertical Velocity, and Roar. The park is a haven for the Looney Tunes characters that entertain old and young alike. Medusa draws in many customers because it is the parks biggest ride and is the only floorless roller coaster in the regional area. Medusa is also notable because the first drop is 150 feet and the ride lasts over four minutes. The newest ride is known as the V2 and has been responsible for bringing in a lot of traffic to the park, as well. The Roar roller coaster is popular because it is the only wooden roller coaster in the park. With all of the additions of great exhibits, awesome rides, and a one of kind atmosphere the Marine World theme park brings in major revenue to the city of Vallejo. Not only is the park popular in and around Vallejo, the park is a competitor with the other big amusement park in the area, which is San Francisco Bay’s Paramount Great American that is located in Santa Clara.

The park has been a huge success because it is one of a kind. No other park has been able to combine animals and amusement rides the way that Marine World has been able to. The great thing about the park is that it truly offers something for everyone. Even if members of the family do not like roller coasters, they can enjoy other amusement park rides and the animal exhibits some family fun attractions are the White Water Safari, Monkey Business, and Wave Jumper. Marine World also features many live shows and special events that will have the old and young alike excited and entertained for their entire visit. The park is considered the only one of its kind in the United States, offering more rides and attractions than any other theme park in California and perhaps even in the United States!

Not only does the park offer one of a kind experiences, it also offers great prices for families to enjoy themselves without breaking the bank. When you purchase your tickets online you can get a one-day admission for .99, when you buy a kid online pass you’ll pay just .99, otherwise general admission is .99 for adults and .99 for children 48 inches and under. While these aren’t admission prices that you would want to pay if you were going to visit every day, they are well worth the price of family entertainment every now and again.

If you’ll be traveling to the area to visit Six Flags Marine World, you’ll also want to think about where you will stay during your trip to Vallejo. There are many affordable options right nearby so that you will not have to worry about finding your way to the theme park or your hotel after a long day of fun and entertainment. Whether you’re old or young or have a little of both in your group you’ll find your lodging options in and around Vallejo comfortable and affordable. Some great lodging choices may be:

The Holiday Inn Napa Valley Gateway
1000 Fairgrounds Dr.
Vallejo, California 94589
(800) 533-5733
(707) 644-1200

Best Western
1596 Fairgrounds Dr.
Vallejo, California 94589
(877) 544-9655

Quality Inn
44 Admiral Callaghan Lane
Vallejo, California 94591
(866) 643-1061
(707) 643-1061

Hilton Concord
1970 Diamond Boulevard
Concord, California 94520
(925) 827-2000

A trip to Six Flags Marine World will be an unforgettable experience for the whole family. If you live around the area you’ll definitely make time to visit the park every year to visit your favorite attractions and see if there is anything new to entertain and delight you. Even if you don’t live in the area you’ll find yourself wanting to return again and again because you just can’t find this type of theme park anywhere else in the world. If you love roller coasters and classic amusement park rides and you also have a love of animals big and small, you’ll find that the Six Flags Marine World is your favorite theme park to visit.

REDWOOD CITY, CA–(Marketwire – December 16, 2009) – AeroScout, the leading provider of Unified Asset Visibility for the healthcare industry, today announced that Samarinda Aged Services in Ashburton, Australia, has implemented AeroScout’s Resident Safety and Asset Tracking and Management solutions at its Samarinda Lodge. AeroScout’s Wi-Fi RTLS (real time location system) enables aged care residents to use call buttons to request assistance when needed, and staff to quickly locate residents anywhere on the property. Samarinda also uses the AeroScout solutions to track and manage equipment that is used to deliver care. As a result of the implementation, Samarinda Lodge has:

— Improved resident satisfaction and safety;
— Reduced the frequency of resident falls;
— Improved operational efficiency;
— Expedited staff response times and provided better documentation of
response time; and
— Increased staff retention rates to 25% above the industry average.

Located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Samarinda Aged Services is a community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides a range of services for the aged. Samarinda Lodge is its award-winning aged care facility which is one of Australia’s top assisted living homes and the winner of several prestigious honors, including Australia’s Minister of Aging 2009 Award for Excellence in Aged Care for Innovation in Technology, the Aged Care Facility of the Year by the Aged Care Association of Australia, and the Information Technology in Aged Care Implementation of the Year award. Samarinda Lodge’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of the aged by providing excellent care and respecting each person’s dignity and individuality.

With limited resources throughout the aged care industry, solutions are needed to streamline operations and allow staff more time to focus on resident care. This is important for resident safety and satisfaction, as well as for staff satisfaction, which improves when caregivers have the tools they need to do their job well. Samarinda is a leader in applying advanced technologies to improve care, satisfaction and efficiency.

Tanya Gilchrist, CEO of Samarinda Lodge, recognized the opportunity to leverage Samarinda’s existing Cisco Unified Wireless Network to add RTLS to automate processes. Samarinda Lodge uses AeroScout’s Resident Safety and AeroScout’s Asset Tracking and Management solutions, both of which consist of AeroScout MobileView software and Wi-Fi RFID Tags. For asset tracking, Samarinda Lodge attached Wi-Fi Tags to shower trolleys, lifting equipment and wheelchairs. AeroScout’s MobileView allows staff to quickly search for and locate equipment when needed, leading to improved response times and staff productivity.

In addition, each resident is given an AeroScout Wi-Fi Tag with a call button. If residents need assistance, they press the call button to notify staff automatically. Nurses respond directly via a portable voice device, ensuring residents know that help is on the way. Residents can also have a tag with them at all times and feel comfortable that they can reach a nurse from anywhere on the property, including while walking outside.

“We’re extremely proud of the freedom and sense of security the AeroScout solutions have given our residents. With a Wi-Fi network that reaches around the block, residents are free to walk outdoors and still request help if necessary,” stated Ms. Gilchrist. “In turn, we’ve seen this technology positively affect our staff on a day-to-day basis. Nurses can quickly monitor each patient’s activity and communicate with them seamlessly. Fostering such a positive work environment has allowed us to attain a staff retention rate significantly higher than the industry average.”

Using AeroScout, Samarinda empowers staff to deliver more care hours. The result has been a higher satisfaction level among employees since they are accomplishing their goals and keeping residents safe and comforted. In addition, responding faster to resident needs and requests leads to fewer falls — if residents are confident that they will be helped in a timely manner, they are less likely to attempt to get up from bed or their chair when they shouldn’t.

“Samarinda’s deep commitment to providing the best care and the highest level of safety for its residents, even in the face of ever-tightening budgets, is clearly shown in this implementation,” said Gabi Daniely, Vice President of Marketing and Product Strategy at AeroScout. “Samarinda is a leader in the aged care industry in the use of technology, and that has improved resident care, safety and staff satisfaction while also reducing overall costs.”

History

A modern wharf piling bored by bivalves known as “shipworms”.

As proposed by Richardson, treatment of wood has been practised for almost as long as the use of wood itself. Some accounts reach back to the beginning of recorded history. For example the Bible in Genesis, 6:13-14 nd God said unto Noah… make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. There are also records of wood preservation reaching back to ancient Greece during Alexander the Great rule, where bridge wood was soaked in olive oil. The Romans protected their ship hulls by brushing the wood with tar. During the Industrial Revolution wood preservation became a corner stone of the wood processing industry. Inventors and scientists such as Bethell, Boucherie, Burnett and Kyan made historic developments in wood preservation, with the preservative solutions and processes. Commercial pressure treatment began in the latter half of the 1800s with the protection of railroad crossties using creosote. Treated wood was used primarily for industrial, agricultural, and utility applications, where it is still used, until its use grew considerably (at least in the United States) in the 1970s as homeowners began building decks and backyard projects.

Hazards

Wood industrially pressure-treated with approved preservative products pose a limited risk to the public, but should be disposed of properly. On December 31, 2003, the wood treatment industry stopped treating residential lumber with Arsenic and Chromium (Chromated Copper Arsenate, CCA). This was a voluntary agreement with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. CCA was replaced by Copper based pesticides, with exceptions for certain industrial uses. Industrial wood preservation chemicals are generally not available directly to the public and may require special approval to import or purchase depending on the product and the jurisdiction where being used. In most countries, industrial wood preservation operations are notifiable industrial activities that require licensing from relevant regulatory authorities such as EPA or equivalent. Reporting and licensing conditions vary widely depending on the particular chemicals used and the country of use.

Although pesticides are used to treat lumber, preserving lumber protects natural resources by enabling wood products to last longer. Previous poor practices in industry have left legacies of contaminated ground and water around wood treatment sites in some cases. However, under currently approved industry practices and regulatory controls such as implemented in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and elsewhere, environmental impact of these operations should be minimal.

Wood treated with modern preservatives is generally safe to handle given appropriate handling precautions and personal protection measures. However, treated wood may present certain hazards in some circumstances such as during combustion or where loose wood dust particles or other fine toxic residues are generated or where treated wood comes into direct contact with food and agriculture.

Material safety data sheets and safe handling guidelines are required by law to be provided by suppliers of wood preservative chemicals and treated wood products. This information should be obtained and reviewed before handling and using wood preservative chemicals and treated wood products.

Chemical preservatives

Timber or lumber that is treated with a preservative generally have it applied through vacuum and/or pressure treatment. The preservatives used to pressure-treat timber are classified as pesticides. Treating timber provides long-term resistance to organisms that cause deterioration. If it is applied correctly, it extends the productive life of timber by five to ten times. If left untreated, wood that is exposed to moisture or soil for sustained periods of time will become weakened by various types of fungi, bacteria or insects.

Chemical preservatives can be classified into three broad categories: Water-borne preservatives, Oil-borne preservatives, and Light Organic Solvent Preservatives (LOSPs). These are discussed in more detail below.

Water-borne preservatives

Water is the most common solvent carrier in preservative formulations due to its availability and low cost. Water-borne systems do however have the drawback that they swell timber, leading to increased twisting, splitting and checking than alternatives.

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA)

Main article: Chromated copper arsenate

.In CCA treatment, copper is the primary fungicide, arsenic is a secondary fungicide and an insecticide, and chromium is a fixative which also provides ultraviolet (UV) light resistance. Recognized for the greenish tint it imparts to timber, CCA is a preservative that was extremely common for many decades.

In the pressure treatment process, an aqueous solution of CCA is applied using a vacuum and pressure cycle, and the treated wood is then stacked to dry (see Application Processes below). During the process, the mixture of oxides reacts to form insoluble compounds, helping with leaching problems. If the process is carried out correctly, very little preservative is left on the surface of the wood, and the safety hazard from surface toxins is minimised.

The process can apply varying amounts of preservative at varying levels of pressure to protect the wood against increasing levels of attack. Increasing protection can be applied (in increasing order of attack and treatment) for: exposure to the atmosphere, implantation within soil, or insertion into a marine environment.

In the last decade concerns were raised that the chemicals may leach from the wood into surrounding soil, resulting in concentrations higher than naturally occurring background levels. A study cited in Forest Products Journal found 1213% of the chromated copper arsenate leached from treated wood buried in compost during a 12-month period. Once these chemicals have leached from the wood, they are likely to bind to soil particles, especially in soils with clay or soils that are more alkaline than neutral. In the United States the powerful US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a report in 2002 stating that exposure to arsenic from direct human contact with CCA treated wood may be higher than was previously thought. On 1 January 2004 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a voluntary agreement with industry began restricting the use of CCA in treated timber in residential and commercial construction, with the exception of shakes and shingles, permanent wood foundations, and certain commercial applications. This was in an effort to reduce the use of arsenic and improve environmental safety, although the EPA were careful to point out that they had not concluded that CCA treated wood structures in service posed an unacceptable risk to the community. The EPA did not call for the removal or dismantling of existing CCA treated wood structures.

In Australia, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) restricted the use of CCA preservative for treatment of timber used in certain applications from March 2006. CCA may no longer be used to treat wood used in ‘intimate human contact’ applications such as children’s play equipment, furniture, residential decking and handrailing. Use for low contact residential, commercial and industrial applications remains unrestricted, as does its use in all other situations. The APVMA decision to restrict the use of CCA in Australia was a precautionary measure, even though the report found no evidence that demonstrated CCA treated timber posed unreasonable risks to humans in normal use. Similarly to the US EPA, the APVMA did not recommend dismantling or removal of existing CCA treated wood structures.

In Europe, Directive 2003/2/EC restricts the marketing and use of arsenic, including CCA wood treatment. CCA treated wood is not permitted to be used in residential or domestic constructions. It is permitted for use in various industrial and public works, such as bridges, highway safety fencing, electric power transmission and telecommunications poles.

Alkaline copper quaternary

Alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) is a preservative made up of copper, a fungicide, and a quaternary ammonium compound (quat), an insecticide which also augments the fungicidal treatment is a wood preservative that has come into wide use in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia following restrictions on CCA. Its use is governed by national and international standards, which determine the volume of preservative uptake required for a specific timber end use.

Since it contains high levels of copper, ACQ-treated timber is five times more corrosive to common steel, according to test results. It is necessary to use double-galvanized or stainless steel fasteners in ACQ timber. Use of fasteners meeting or exceeding requirements for ASTM A 153 Class D meet the added requirements for fastener durability. The U.S. began mandating the use of non-arsenic containing wood preservatives for virtually all residential use timber in 2004.

Modern versions have been developed which offer improved performance to those mentioned above. It should be noted that the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) standards for ACQ require a retention of 0.25 pounds per cubic ft (PCF) for above ground use and .40 pcf for ground contact.

Chemical Specialties, Inc (CSI, now Viance) received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 2002 for commercial introduction of ACQ. Its widespread use has eliminated major quantities of arsenic and chromium previously contained in CCA.

Copper azole

Copper azole preservative (denoted as CA-B and CA-C under American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) standards) is a major copper based wood preservative that has come into wide use in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia following restrictions on CCA. Its use is governed by national and international standards, which determine the volume of preservative uptake required for a specific timber end use.

Copper Azole is similar to ACQ with the difference being that the dissolved copper preservative is augmented by an Azole co-biocide instead of the quat biocide used in ACQ. The Azole co-biocide yields a Copper Azole product that is effective at much lower retentions than required for equivalent ACQ performance.

It is marketed widely under the “Wolmanized” brand in the US, and the “Tanalith” brand across Europe and other international markets.

The AWPA standard retention for CA-B is .10 pounds per cubic ft (pcf) for above ground applications and .21 pcf for ground contact applications. Type C copper azole, denoted as CA-C, has been introduced under the Wolmanized brand. The AWPA standard retention for CA-C is .06 pounds per cubic ft (pcf) for above ground applications and .15 pcf for ground contact applications.

The copper azole preservative incorporates organic triazoles such as tebuconazole or propiconazole as the co-biocide, which are also used to protect food crops. The general appearance of wood treated with copper azole preservative is similar to CCA with a green colouration.

Other copper compounds

These include copper HDO (CuHDO), copper chromate, copper citrate, acid copper chromate and ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA). The CuHDO treatment is an alternative to CCA, ACQ and CA used in Europe and in approval stages for United States and Canada. ACZA is generally used for marine applications.

Micronized copper technology

Particulate (micronised or dispersed) copper preservative technology has recently been introduced in the USA and Europe. In these systems, the copper is ground to micro sized particles and suspended in water rather than being dissolved in a chemical reaction as is the case with other copper products such as ACQ and Copper Azole. There are currently two particulate copper systems in production. One system uses a quat biocide system (known as MCQ) and is a take-off of ACQ. The other uses an azole biocide (known as MCA or CA-C) and is a take-off of copper azole.

Proponents of the particulate copper systems make the case that the particulate copper system perform as well or better than the dissolved copper systems as a wood preservative. None of the particulate copper systems have been submitted to the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) for evaluation, thus the particulate systems should not be used in applications where AWPA standards are required. However, all of the particulate copper systems have been tested and approved for building code requirements by the International Code Council (ICC). The particulate copper systems provide a lighter color than dissolved copper systems such as ACQ or Copper Azole.

Two particulate copper systems, one marketed as MicroPro and the other as Wolmanized using CA-C formulation, have achieved Environmentally Preferable Product Certification. The “EPP” Certification was issued by Scientific Certifications Systems (SCS), and is based on a comparative Life Cycle Impact Assessments with an industry standard.

The copper particle size used in the micronized copper products ranges from 1 to 700 nm with an average under 300 nm. Larger particles do not adequately penetrate the wood cell walls. It is claimed by the proponents of micronized copper products that the copper nano particles which escape the wood will bond readily with organic matter and become biologically inactive.

Borate preservatives

Boric acid, oxides and salts (borates) are effective wood preservatives and are supplied under numerous brand names throughout the world. Borate treated wood is of low toxicity to humans, and does not contain copper or other heavy metals. However, unlike most other preservatives, borate compounds do not become fixed in the wood and can readily be leached out. Therefore they should not be used where they will be exposed to rain, water or ground contact. Recent interest in low toxicity timber for residential use, along with new regulations restricting some wood preservation agents, has resulted in a resurgence of the use of borate treated wood for floor beams and internal structural members.

Sodium silicate-based preservatives

Sodium silicate is produced by fusing sodium with sand or heating both ingredients under pressure. It has been in use since the 1800s. It can be a deterrent against insect attack and possesses minor flame-resistant properties; however, it is easily washed out of wood by moisture, forming a flake-like layer on top of the wood. One company, Timber Treatment Technology, LLC, has found that infusing timber with a chemical solution containing sodium silicate with a specified energy level applied yields wood that not only does not provide flake or layering on the wood, nor does it wash out as others have done in the past; and it provides processed timber that received a class A fire classification. Their processed wood also paints and stains as new wood does. TTT, LLC, sells these products under the name TimberSIL. Other uses include fixing pigments in paintings and cloth printing, and for preserving eggs.

Potassium silicate-based preservatives

There are a number of European “natural” paint fabricants that have developed potassium silicate (potassium waterglass) based preservatives. They frequently include boron compounds, cellulose, lignin and other plant extracts. They are a surface application with a minimal impregnation for internal use.

Bifenthrin spray preservatives

In Australia, a water-based bifenthrin preservative has been developed to improve the insect resistance of timber. As this preservative is applied by spray, it only penetrates the outer 2mm of the timber cross-section. Concerns have been raised as to whether this thin-envelope system will provide protection against insects in the longer term, particularly when exposed to sunlight for extended periods.

Fire retardant treated

This treated wood contains a fire retardant chemical that remains stable in high temperature environments and does not increase the corrosivity of metal hardware in contact with the wood.

Oil-borne preservatives

These include pentachlorophenol and creosote. They are toxic, have an unpleasant odour and are generally not used in consumer products.

Coal-tar creosote

Creosote is a tar-based preservative that has been commonly used for telephone poles and railroad ties. Creosote is one of the oldest wood preservatives, and was originally derived from a wood distillate. These days virtually all creosote is manufactured from the distillation of coal tar. It often collects inside chimneys and may cause a fire hazard. Creosote is regulated as a pesticide and is not usually sold to the general public. It is still used for railroad ties (also called railway sleepers and cross ties) and utility poles.

Linseed oil

In recent years in Australia and New Zealand, Linseed has been incorporated in preservative formulations as a solvent and water repellent to ‘envelope treat’ timber. This involves just treating the outer 5mm of the cross-section of a timber member with preservative eg Permethrin 25:75, leaving the core untreated. While not as effective as CCA or LOSP methods, envelope treatments are significantly cheaper as they use far less preservative. Major preservative manufacturers add a blue dye or red to envelope treatments. Blue coloured timber is for use south of the Tropic of Capricorn and red for elsewhere. The coloured dye also indicates that the timber is treated for resistance to termites/white ants. There is an on-going promotional campaign in Australia for this type of treatment. Linseed oil is used to preserve Wood fences, log cabins, and wood furniture. (Such woods as Willow, Pine, oak and exc.) The function of linseed oil as a preservative is believed to be related to its action as a water repellent and drying agent rather than a direct biocidal activity. A number of European companies have developed natural-oil-only-based treatments; no synthetic preservative such as permethrin is added. Menz Holz OHT use autoclave impregnation with linseed, sunflower and rapeseed oil for 6 to 8 hours.

Other emulsions

Light organic solvent preservatives (LOSP)

This class of timber treatments use white spirit as the solvent carrier to deliver preservative compounds into timber. Synthetic pyrethroids are used as an insecticide, such as permethrin, bifenthrin or deltamethrin. In Australia and New Zealand, the most common formulations use Permethrin as an insecticide, and Propaconazole & Tebuconazole as fungicides. While still using a chemical preservative, this formulation contains no heavy-metal compounds.

With the introduction of strict volatile organic compound (VOC) laws in the European Union, LOSPs have disadvantages due to the high cost and long process times associated with vapour-recovery systems. LOSPs have been emulsified into water-based solvents. While this does significantly reduce VOC emissions, the timber swells during treatment, removing many of the advantages of LOSP formulations.

New technologies

Wood acetylation

Chemical modification of wood at the molecular level has been used to improve its performance properties. Many chemical reaction systems for the modification of wood, especially those using various types of anhydrides, have been published; however, the reaction of wood with acetic anhydride has been the most studied.

The physical properties of any material are determined by its chemical structure. Wood contains an abundance of chemical groups called “free hydroxyls”. Free hydroxyl groups readily absorb and release water according to changes in the climatic conditions to which they are exposed. This is the main reason why wood dimensional stability is impacted by swelling and shrinking. It is also believed that the digestion of wood by enzymes initiates at the free hydroxyl sites – which is one of the principal reasons why wood is prone to decay.

Acetylation effectively changes the free hydroxyls within wood into acetyl groups. This is done by reacting the wood with acetic anhydride, which comes from acetic acid (known as vinegar when in its dilute form). When free hydroxyl groups are transformed to acetyl groups, the ability of the wood to absorb water is greatly reduced, rendering the wood more dimensionally stable and, because it is no longer digestible, extremely durable. In general, softwoods naturally have an acetyl content between 0.5 to 1.5% and more durable hardwoods between 2 to 4.5%. Acetylation takes wood well beyond these levels with corresponding benefits. These include an extended coatings life due to acetylated wood acting as a more stable substrate for paints and translucent coatings. Acetylated wood is non-toxic and does not have the environmental issues associated with traditional preservation techniques.

The acetylation of wood was first done in Germany in 1928 by Fuchs. In 1946, Tarkow, Stamm and Erickson first described the use of wood acetylation to stabilize wood from swelling in water. Since the 1940, many laboratories around the world have looked at acetylation of many different types of woods and agricultural resources.

In spite of the vast amount of research on chemical modification of wood, and, more specifically, on the acetylation of wood, commercialization did not come easily. The first patent on the acetylation of wood was filed by Suida in Austria in 1930. Later, in 1947, Stamm and Tarkow filed a patent on the acetylation of wood and boards using pyridine as a catalyst. In 1961, the Koppers Company published a technical bulletin on the acetylation of wood using no catalysis but with an organic cosolvent In 1977, in Russia, Otlesnov and Nikitina came close to commercialization but the process was discontinued presumably because cost-effectiveness could not be achieved. In 2007 a London-based company, with production facilities in The Netherlands, achieved cost-effective commercialization and began large-scale production of acetylated wood.

Natural preservatives

Naturally rot-resistant woods

These species are resistant to decay in their natural state, due to high levels of organic chemicals called “extractives”, mainly polyphenols. Extractives are chemicals that are deposited in the heartwood of certain tree species as they convert sapwood to heartwood. Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii), Merbau (Intsia bijuga), Ironbark (Eucalyptus spp.), Ttara (Podocarpus totara), Puriri (Vitex lucens), Kauri (Agathis australis), and many cypresses, such as Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and Western Redcedar (Thuja plicata), fall in this category. However, many of these species tend to be prohibitively expensive for general construction applications.

Huon Pine was used for ship hulls in the 19th century, but over-harvesting and Huon Pine’s extremely slow growth rate makes this now a speciality timber. Huon Pine is so rot resistant that fallen trees from many years ago are still commercially valuable.

Merbau is still a popular decking timber and has a long life in above ground applications, but it is logged in an unsustainable manner (see Illegal logging) and is too hard and brittle for general use. Ironbark is a good choice where available. It is harvested from both old-growth and plantation in Australia and is highly resistant to rot and termites. It is most commonly used for fence posts and house stumps.

Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) have long been used for rot-resistant fence posts and rails in eastern United States, with the Black Locust also planted in modern times in Europe. Coast Redwood is commonly used for similar applications in the western United States.

Ttara and Puriri were used extensively in New Zealand during the European colonial era when native forests were “mined”, even as fence posts of which many are still operating. Ttara was used by the Maori to build large waka (canoes). Today, they are speciality timbers as a result of their scarcity, lower grade stocks are still available making for good landscaping.

Kauri is a superb timber for building the hulls and decks of boats. It too is now a speciality timber and ancient logs (in excess of 3000 years) that have been mined from swamps are used by wood turners and furniture makers.

It should be noted that the natural durability or rot and insect resistance of wood species is always based on the heartwood (or truewood). The sapwood of all timber species should be considered to be non-durable without preservative treatment.

Tung oil

Tung oil has been known about for hundreds of years in China, where it was used as a preservative for wood ships. The oil penetrates the wood, then hardens to form an impermeable hydrophobic layer up to 5 mm into the wood. As a preservative it is effective for exterior work above and below ground, but the thin layer makes it less useful in practice. It is not available as a pressure treatment. Some manufacturers recommend tung oil as a stabiliser for CCA.

Heat treatments

There is ongoing research as to whether heat treatments can be used to make timber more durable. By heating timber to a certain temperature, it may be possible to make the wood-fibre less appetising to insects. Although unlikely to be as effective as chemical preservatives, anecdotal evidence suggests some consumers would prefer chemical-free timber preservation methods.

Heat treatment can also improve the properties of the wood with respect to water: lower equilibrium moisture, less moisture deformation, and weather resistance. It is weather-resistant enough to be used, unprotected, in facades or in kitchen tables, where wetting is expected.

There are 3 similar European heat treatments: Retiwood, developed in France, Thermowood, developed in Finland by VTT, and Platowood developed in The Netherlands. These processes autoclave the treated wood, subjecting it to pressure and heat, along with nitrogen or water vapour to control drying in a staged treatment process ranging from 24 to 48 hours at temperatures of 180 to 230C depending on timber species. These processes increase the durability, dimensional stability and hardness of the treated wood by at least one class; however, the treated wood is darkened in colour, and there are changes in certain mechanical characteristics: specifically, the modulus of elasticity is increased to 10%, and the modulus of rupture is diminished by 5% to 20%; thus, the treated wood requires drilling for nailing to avoid splitting the wood. Certain of these processes cause less of an impact than others in their the mechanical effects upon the treated wood. Wood treated with this process is often used for cladding or siding, flooring, furniture and windows.

Mud treatment

Wood and bamboo can be buried in mud to help protect it from insects and decay. This practice is used widely in Vietnam to build farm houses consisting of a wooden structural frame, a bamboo roof frame and bamboo with mud mixed with rice hay for the walls. While wood in contact with soil will generally decompose more quickly than wood not in contact with soil, it is possible that the predominantly clay soils prevalent in Vietnam provide a degree of mechanical protection against insect attack which compensates for the accelerated rate of decay.

Also, since wood is only subject to bacterial decay under specific temperature and moisture content ranges, submerging it in water-saturated mud can retard decay by saturating the wood’s internal cells beyond their moisture decay range.

Application processes

Introduction and history

Probably the first attempts made to protect wood from decay and insect attack consisted of brushing or rubbing preservatives onto the surfaces of the treated wood. Through trial and error the most effective preservatives and application processes where slowly determined. In the Industrial Revolution, demands for such things as telegraph poles and railroad ties helped to fuel an explosion of new techniques that emerged in the early 19th century. The sharpest rise in inventions took place between 1830 and 1840, when Bethell, Boucherie, Burnett and Kyan were making wood-preserving history. Since then, numerous processes have been introduced or existing processes improved. The goal of modern day wood preservation is to ensure a deep, uniform penetration with reasonable cost, without endangering the environment. The most widespread application processes today are those using artificial pressure through which many woods are being effectively treated, but several species (such as Spruce, Douglas Fir, Larch, Hemlock and Fir) are very resistant to impregnation. With the use of incising, the treatment of these woods has been somewhat successful but with a higher cost and not always satisfactory results. One can divide the wood-preserving methods roughly into either non-pressure processes or pressure processes.

Non-pressure processes

There are numerous non-pressure processes of treating wood which vary primarily in their procedure. The most common of these treatments involve the application of the preservative by means of brushing or spraying, dipping, soaking, steeping or by means of hot and cold bath. There is also a variety of additional methods involving charring, applying preservatives in bored holes, diffusion processes and sap displacement.

Brush and spray treatments

Brushing preservatives is a long-practiced method and often used in today carpentry workshops. Through technology developments it is also possible to spray preservative over the surface of the timber. Some of the liquid is drawn into the wood as the result of capillary action, but this penetration is insignificant and not suitable for long-term weathering. By using the spray method, coal-tar creosote, oil-borne solutions and water-borne salts (to some extent) can also be applied. A thorough brush or spray treatment with coal-tar creosote can add 1 to 3 years to the lifespan of poles or posts. Two or more coats provide better protection than one, but the successive coats should not be applied until the prior coat has dried or soaked into the wood. The wood should be seasoned before treatment.

Dipping

Dipping consists of simply immersing the wood in a bath of creosote or other preservative for a few seconds or minutes. Similar penetrations to that of brushing and spraying processes are achieved. It has the advantage of minimizing hand labor. It requires more equipment and larger quantities of preservative and is not adequate for treating small lots of timber. Usually the dipping process is useful in the treatment of window sashes and doors. Treatment with Copper salt preservatives is no longer allowed with this method.

Steeping

In this process the wood is submerged in a tank of water-preservative mix, and allowed to soak for a longer period of time (several days to weeks). This process was developed in the 19th century by John Kyan. The depth and retention achieved depends on factors such as species, wood moisture, preservative and soak duration. The majority of the absorption takes place during the first two or three days, but will continue at a slower pace for an indefinite period. As a result, the longer the wood can be left in the solution, the better treatment it will receive. When treating seasoned timber, both the water and the preservative salt soak into the wood, making it necessary to season the wood a second time. Posts and poles can be treated directly on endangered areas, but should be treated at least 30 cm (0.98 ft) above the future ground level.

The depth obtained during regular steeping periods varies from 5 mm to 10 mm (1/8 to 1/3 in.) up to 30 mm (1.2 in) by sap pine. Due to the low absorption, solution strength should be somewhat stronger than that in pressure processes, around 5% for seasoned timber and 10% for green timber (because the concentration slowly decreases as the chemicals diffuse into the wood). The solution strength should be controlled continually and, if necessary, be corrected with the salt additive. After the timber is removed from the treatment tank, the chemical will continue to spread within the wood if it has sufficient moisture content. The wood should be weighed down and piled so that the solution can reach all surfaces. (Sawed materials stickers should be placed between every board layer.) This process finds minimal use despite its former popularity in continental Europe and Great Britain.

Kyanizing

Named after John Howard Kyan, who patented this process in England in 1832, Kyanizing consists of steeping wood in a 0.67% mercuric chloride preservative solution.

Hot and cold bath

Patented by C. A. Seeley, this process achieves treatment by immersing seasoned wood in successive baths of hot and cold preservatives. During the hot baths, the air expands in the timbers. When the timbers are changed to the cold bath (the preservative can also be changed) a partial vacuum is created within the lumen of the cells, causing the preservative to be drawn into the wood. Some penetration occurs during the hot baths, but most of it takes place during the cold baths. This cycle is repeated with a significant time reduction compared to other steeping processes. Each bath may last 4 to 8 hours or in some cases longer. The temperature of the preservative in the hot bath should be between 60 to 110 C (140 to 230 F) and 30 to 40 C (86 to 104 F) in the cold bath (depending on preservative and treespecies). The average penetration depths achieved with this process ranges from 30 mm to 50 mm (1 to 12/3 in.). Both preservative oils and water-soluble salts can be used with this treatment. Due to the longer treatment periods, this method finds little use in the commercial wood preservation industry today.

Pressure processes

Pressure processes are the most permanent method around today in preserving timber life. Pressure processes are those in which the treatment is carried out in closed cylinders with applied pressure and/or vacuum. These processes have a number of advantages over the non-pressure methods. In most cases, a deeper and more uniform penetration and a higher absorption of preservative is achieved. Another advantage is that the treating conditions can be controlled so that retention and penetration can be varied. These pressure processes can be adapted to large-scale production. The high initial costs for equipment and the energy costs are the biggest disadvantages. These treatment methods are used to protect ties, poles and structural timbers and find use throughout the world today. The various pressure processes that are used today differ in details, but the general method is in all cases the same. The treatment is carried out in cylinders. The timbers are loaded onto special tram cars, so called uggies, and into the cylinder. These cylinders are then set under pressure often with the addition of higher temperature. As final treatment, a vacuum is frequently used to extract excess preservatives. These cycles can be repeated to achieve better penetration.

LOSP treatments often use a vacuum impregnation process. This is possible because of the lower viscosity of the white-spirit carrier used.

Full-cell process

In the full-cell process, the intent is to keep as much of the liquid absorbed into the wood during the pressure period as possible, thus leaving the maximum concentration of preservatives in the treated area. Usually, water solutions of preservative salts are employed with this process but it is also possible to impregnate wood with oil. The desired retention is achieved by changing the strength of the solution. William Burnett patented this development in 1838 of Full-Cell Impregnation with water solutions. The patent covered the use of zinc chloride on water basis, also known as Burnettizing. Full-Cell Process with oils was patented in 1838 by John Bethell. His patent described the injection of tar and oils into wood by applying pressure in closed cylinders. This process is still used today with some improvements.

Fluctuation pressure process

Contrary to the tatic Full-Cell and Empty-Cell processes, the Fluctuation Process is a ynamic Process. By this process the pressure inside the impregnation cylinder changes between pressure and vacuum within a few seconds. There have been inconsistent claims that through this process it is possible to reverse the pit closure by Spruce. However, the best results that have been achieved with this process by Spruce do not exceed a penetration deeper than 10 mm (1/3in.). Specialized equipment is necessary and therefore higher investment costs are incurred.

Boucherie process

Developed by Dr. Boucherie of France in 1838, this approach consisted of attaching a bag or container of preservative solution to a standing or a freshly cut tree with bark, branches, and leaves still attached, thereby injecting the liquid into the sap stream. Through transpiration of moisture from the leaves the preservative is drawn upward through the sapwood of the tree trunk.

The modified Boucherie process consists of placing freshly cut, unpeeled timbers onto declining skids, with the stump slightly elevated, then fastening watertight covering caps or boring a number of holes into the ends, and inserting a solution of copper sulfate or other water- borne preservative into the caps or holes from an elevated container. Preservative oils tend to not penetrate satisfactorily by this method. The hydrostatic pressure of the liquid forces the preservative lengthwise into and through the sapwood, thus pushing the sap out of the other end of the timber. After a few days, the sapwood is completely impregnated; unfortunately little or no penetration takes place in the heartwood. Only green wood can be treated in this manner. This process has found considerable usage to impregnate poles and also larger trees in Europe and North America, and has experienced a revival of usage to impregnate bamboo in countries such as Costa Rica, Bangladesh, India and the state of Hawaii.

High pressure sap displacement system

Developed in the Philippines, this method (abbreviated HPSD) consists of a cylinder pressure cap made from a 3 mm thick mild steel plate secured with 8 sets of bolts, a 2-HP diesel engine, and a pressure regulator with 1.4 14 kg/m2 capacity. The cap is placed over the stump of a pole, tree or bamboo and the preservative is forced into the wood with pressure from the engine.

Incising

First tested and patented by Kolossvary, Haltenberger, and Berdenich of Austria in 1911 and 1912 (U.S. pats. 1,012,207 and 1,018,624) with several improvements from O. P. M. Goss, D. W. Edwards and J. H. Mansfield among others, this process consists of making shallow, slit-like holes in the surfaces of material to be treated, so that deeper and more uniform penetration of preventative may be obtained. The term “incising” or perforating comes from Latin incidere, a compound of in and caedere (to cut). This process can also be used to ensure a long durability of food through its packaging. The air exchange can be ensured with laser-incised holes within packaging that are so fine that moisture does not escape. Incisions made in sawed material usually are parallel with the grain of the wood. This process is common in North America (since the 1950s), where Douglas-Fir products and pole butts of various species are prepared before treatment. It is most useful for woods that are resistant to side penetration but allow preservative transport along the grain. In the region in which it is produced, it is common practice to incise all sawed Douglas fir 3 in. or more in thickness before treatment.

Unfortunately the impregnation of Spruce, the most important structural timber large areas in Europe has shown that unsatisfactory treatment depths have been achieved with impregnation. The maximum penetration of 2 mm (1/12 in.) is not sufficient to protect wood in weathered positions. The present-day incising machines consist essentially of four revolving drums fitted with teeth or needles or with lasers that burn the incisions into the wood. Preservatives can be spread along the grain up to 20 mm (5/6 in.) in radial and up to 2 mm in (1/12 in.) tangential and radial direction.

In North America, where smaller timber dimensions are common, incision depths of 4 to 6 mm (1/6 to 1/4 in.) have become standard. In Europe, where larger dimensions are widespread, incision depths of 10 to 12 mm (1/2 in.) are necessary. The incisions are visible and often considered to be wood error. Incisions by laser are significantly smaller than those of spokes or needles. The costs for each process type are approximately for spoke/conventional all-round incising 0.50 per m, by laser incising 3.60 per m and by needle incision 1.00 per m. (Figures originate from the year 1998 and may vary from present day prices.)

Microwaving

An alternative method of increasing the permeability of timber involves using microwave technology. Ongoing research in this area is being conducted by the Cooperative Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

As we prepare for the BBQ season, many of us are starting to think about our garden’s general design and layout and how to incorporate the ‘outdoors living’ way of life into our gardens.

Gardens up and down the country are now busy being designed, built and crafted into relaxed outdoor eating areas where families and friends can relax over the summer months.

Designing the best garden to fit into your lifestyle can be as important as the way you design the interior of your house. There are many factors you need to think about before you start designing and ‘building’ your garden with a specific BBQ area in mind.

For starters, do you want your garden to have a modern and contemporary feel? Do you live in a country style cottage? You may be wanting to maintain the traditional feel of your garden? Do you have children and want a safe play area in the garden but do not want it to take over (you’ll still want a grown up area, where you can sit and enjoy your garden once the children have gone to bed!) Modern house? You need a modern outdoor living area – possibly using modern building materials and incorporating contemporary features like lighting and Euro-style BBQ architecture. It is possible for London terrace homes to get away with both ‘country cottage’ and modern design styles.

Decking has become a really popular part of any garden design and is a key factor in many garden plans. For example, will you want your decking to come straight out from the back of the house? If your garden is lower than the back of the house, you may want a raised deck area, with steps then down onto your lawn or you want steps from the house down to the decking, so then the deck flows straight onto the rest of the garden. It may even be that you want to design the decking away from the house, in another part of the garden. Don’t forget to take into consideration the distance from your back door or kitchen because in the height of summer you’ll need to be able to get food out in a hurry when the BBQ is ready to go…or back in when the rains start!

The shape of a deck area is another part of overall garden design to consider, it doesn’t just have to be a rectangular or square shape. With the different sorts of timber available, including the ‘typical’ redwood Pine, anything is possible and it is important that the design, and even shades of timber, fits with the rest of the garden. If you’ll want your summer BBQ’s to run late in to the evening, you’ll probably want to consider lighting, and possibly heat. Therefore consider how electric/power will feed into your design. Want something a bit more permanent that doesn’t need packing up each autumn? Why not consider a Spanish chimney BBQ? These also help funnel the smoke away from the BBQ garden area (especially useful, if like us, you have a habit of creating smokey BBQ’s).

If you intend using the decking area as the main dining area, then size is a factor you need to consider. The design and shape of the decking needs to be large enough to fit the type of garden furniture you are going to have (or do already have). If it is going to be used as the sun area, then make sure there will be enough space once the sun beds are out with people lying on them, and of course for a small table to hold the Pimms…

You may be lucky enough to have a swimming pool and want the decking and BBQ area to be designed around the pool, making it a safe and comfortable way for people to enjoy being near the pool…but not in it.

Not everyone wants decking for their BBQ area nor is it suitable in every garden. Many gardens look better with a more traditional feel and many people like patios as an alternative. These days, with so many choices of stonework and materials, a patio doesn’t have to be square grey slabs in a rectangle. Consider brick edges patios, different types of stonework including those with a slightly uneven surface or even reclaimed material.

If your garden is on a slope, you could terrace using these materials and have one of these terraces specifically as your BBQ preparation ‘zone’.

If designing a patio area, think about the area of the garden you want it to be in. If you’re planning to be eating outside every time the sun comes out, a spot furthest away from the sounds of the neighbours, and with natural screening provided by hedges, trees and fences is preferable (possibly for them as well as you). Stonework won’t mark as badly as decking either, so if a guest spills a glass of red wine or Pimms, it’ll cause less damage on stonework than it would on timber.

Raised flower beds and vegetable beds designed within patio areas using the beds as low walls would not only look nice but would also be functional in having fresh herbs and produce right next to the BBQ chef to utilise in ‘his’ recipes. Coriander, fresh thyme or mint is fantastic on BBQ’d meat.

If you plan to do a bit of garden building this spring, it’ll be worth making sure that you know what you want from your garden first as the most important thing when preparing a relaxed BBQ or entertaining area is in ensuring that the garden works for you, your family and your lifestyle. After all you will want to be able to enjoy it for as many months of the year as possible, how ever long that may end of being during a typical UK summer.

About the Author

I’m an English instructor. I love my career because it allows me to work with students of all ages (from children in kindergarten to mature adults in college) and walks of life.  I have a B.A. in English from San Diego State University and have recently obtained my M.A., also in English, from National University.  During my free time I travel and write short articles for the Patawalk Virtual Tours website (www.patawalk.com).  This site takes visitors into fully mapped virtual tours in 360 formats of amazing places such as Cancun, Mexico. PUEBLA

Take a break from the routine of beach vacations and visit a city filled with a wealth cultural history, a culinary marvel, and a background of diversity.  So, does such a place exist?  Of course, and it is named Puebla!

Officially this city is named Puebla de Los Angeles (Puebla of the Angels).  It came to be known by such a name due to the legend behind it, which led to its establishment in 1531.  It is often told that a group of angels guided the bishop, Julian Garces, to the exact location of land where the city lies now.  It was in a dream where Garces saw a field in between two rivers and one running through it.  In this same dream, two angels delineated the exact land where he was to build the city.  As it so happens, Garces (accompanied by several other people) went in search of this place and found it!  Incidentally, the land was known as Cuetlazcoapan, which means “Where the Serpent Changes its Skin,” to the native indigenous people.  Of course, if you don’t believe in legends you should know that Puebla was also built out of necessity.  Puebla is located exactly between Mexico City and Veracruz, which were two vital cities for the newly arrived Spaniards.  Not only was Puebla built because a shorter commercial route between the Mexico City and Veracruz was necessary, but because the Spaniards wanted a city away from the indigenous people.  Nevertheless, the indigenous’ hard labor was imminent for labor and the construction of buildings.  As a result, members of the indigenous tribes, Tepeaca, Cholula, and Huejotzingo, were allowed to settle at the city’s outskirts.  Due to its location being central to commerce, Puebla’s economy boomed.  It’s important to include that fact that part of the transportation and commerce was done with China in the Philippines.  As a result, Puebla adopted some aspects of Chinese culture and to this day, Puebla’s ceramic art bears witness to this.

Ever hear of “Cinco de Mayo?” Well, in 1861 the then newly appointed indigenous Mexican President, Benito Juarez, refused to pay a debt owed to Europe.  As a result, the following year three major European countries, France, England, and Spain, sent delegates and troops.  The negotiations failed, somewhat, and England and Spain vowed out of the conflict. At the same time, Mexican conservative forces were concerned with the newly appointed President, who was perceived as an enemy of the Catholic faith, had been ordained a 33rd degree Mason and received considerable support from the emerging Yankee power from the North. Conservatives argued that the Americans had just annexed half of the land of Mexico and were determined to subvert Mexico’s political traditions and impose a liberal Democratic government. Democracy, they thought, was a mechanism to control the direction of Mexico by way of total control of public opinion, and which would bring about economic ruin. Mexican conservative forces were paranoid, and concluded that France, being a Monarchy, a Latin and Catholic country and at the time a tour de force in the world, should integrate Mexico into it’s empire and protect it from the United States of America.   France agreed.  France proceeded with the plan of taking over Mexico and appointed Charles de Lorencez as the man to do the job.  On May 5th of the year 1862, over 6 thousand French troops faced 2 thousand Mexicans led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin.  As we now know, Mexico was victorious and that battle has come to be known as “La Batalla de Puebla” (The Battle of Puebla) and “El Cinco de Mayo.”  Also, due to this victory the city was renamed as “Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza” or Heroic Puebla of Zaragoza. Nonetheless, the French continued their advance and were successful in establishing a Viceroy from the house of Habsburg, in Mexico. From this era, Mexico gained French cultural influences that persist to this day, such as the Mariachi music, the establishment the nowadays very popular music from Sinaloa. In fact, many Mexicans today have French ancestry and surnames that descend from France.

After this event, the city remained the same, in terms of commerce and prestige.  Business was so great that it even branched into the textile industry; in fact, Puebla was the leader of this industry.  Another result of Puebla’s continuous economic success was an inflow of European and Eastern European immigration.  People came from all over Europe, including Italy, Spain, Germany, and France.  There were even people from Lebanon migrating to Puebla.  The result of Puebla’s increasingly diverse population can be seen today in the city’s culinary delicacies, streets, monuments, museums, and other buildings.  As a matter of fact, some people still maintain their original languages!  For instance, a group of Italians settled in the outer parts of the city at the end of the 16th century and to this day they have kept their culture and their language.  Another group that has made its mark in the city is Germans.  They built their own neighborhood with typical building found in South East Germany.  They not only established a Lutheran church but also a college, “Colegio Aleman Alexander von Humboldt.  In fact, the city of Puebla celebrates the renowned German holiday, Oktober Fest.  Thanks to such a diverse background, Puebla’s cuisine is one of the most delicious in the world.  When you visit, you must taste the staple and tradition of Puebla: El Mole Poblano.  This can best be described as chicken or sometimes turkey cooked with a special thick dark sauce made of chocolate, peppers, and many other spices.  Another traditional delicacy is Chiles en Nogada or poblano peppers stuffed with fruits and meat and then covered with a creamy nut and pomegranate sauce.   Tacos Arabes (Arab Tacos) are made of roasted seasoned meat or sometimes pork inside a wheat tortilla.  Perhaps as a desert, you might want to try some Camotes, which are like sweet potatoes or yams.  And for drinks, you have to try some rompope, which is an alcoholic beverage.  Hmmm!

After a delicious meal, you’ll want to explore the city.  In Puebla there are so many places to go and things to see that I don’t know where to begin!  Why not start with something prehistoric: La Gran Piramide de Cholula(The Great Pyramid of Cholula).  This pyramid, built in the times before Christ, is bigger than the Pyramid of Gizah in Egypt!  It consists of a series of trapezoids stacked.  What’s even more incredible is that this pyramid even has a number of extensive underground tunnels!  At the top of the pyramid you’ll find a church that was built according to Hernan Cortez’s orders.  It was used in the 16th century to convert the Aztecs to Christianity.  The church is called, La Iglesia de los Remedios or The Church of Remedies.

Another interesting sight is Fuente a la China Poblana (Fountain of the Puebla China Woman).  This is a fountain in memoriam of a legendary Indian woman who came to be known as the “China Poblana” or very loosely translated, “The China Woman from Puebla.”  Legend has it that Mirrha, her birth name, was born in Delhi, India.  She was kidnapped by pirates when she was nine years old.  She was soon sold as a slave to a Portuguese merchant who later sent her to a man from Puebla (Don Miguel de Sosa) who had previously asked him for a young Chinese slave.  The “Chinese slave” was adopted by Sosa and his wife, who renamed her Catarina de San Juan.  Upon the death of the couple, Catarina married Domingo Suarez, who was a Chinese servant at a local church.  What caught the attention of the people of Puebla at the time were Catarina’s acts of kindness and charitable efforts and of course, her attire.  Upon the death of her husband, Catarina joined a convent and furthered her charitable cause. Obviously, as you can see, she was not really Chinese, but rather, from India, therefore the name is a bit of tongue in cheek pun in itself, to allude to the ignorance of previous centuries, when an Indian woman was taken as being Chinese.

Another place to visit is “El Centro Civico 5 de Mayo.”  This “civic center” is composed of nine separate units atop an impressive hill that oversees the grandeur of the city.  “El Museo de la No Intervencion en el Fuerte de Loreto,” “Museo de Antropologia” (Museum of anthropology), “Fuerte de Guadalupe,” “Expo Puebla” (where the annual state fair is held), “La Sala de Exhibiciones,” El Planetario” (a planetarium), “Museo de Historia Natural” (Museum of Natural History), “Plaza de Toros ‘El Relicario'” (Bullring), and “Auditorio de la Reforma.”

El Zocalo de Puebla is another magnificent place to visit.  This is an extended park and during the weekends don’t be surprised to find it filled with musicians and a variety of other entertainers keeping the crowds in awe.  After you get your dose of fun entertainment, just walk across the street and visit Mexico’s most beautiful church, La Catedral de la Concepcion Inmaculada (Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception).  This cathedral has two identical towers that seem to touch heaven, incredible!  If you’d like to do some shopping, then go to El Caledon de Los Sapos, or The Alley of the Toads.  The set-up is like a swap-meet, but unlike to traditional swap-meet, this place has antiques, original and typical local art, restaurants, and you’ll even find a few bars.  If you’d like to enjoy a little of Puebla’s night life, which includes live music, then come here on Friday and Saturday night.  In fact, a local tavern sells alcohol made out of fruits including one called “pasitas” made out of raisins.  Another place for some shopping is Mercado de Artesanias El Parian.  Here you can find anything typical of Puebla, from ceramics to textiles to art, and even candy.  Puebla also has a first-class zoo.  Unlike most zoos, Africam Safari is more of a wild park where the animals are roaming freely in a replica of their natural habitat, similar to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, so don’t worry; you get to see everything up close and personal from the safety of your reinforced vehicle.

One of the best parts about Puebla is the proximity of the attractions.  For instance, once you visit El Zocalo all you have to do is keep walking north and you’ll be amazed by the following ten blocks of interesting sights.  Right there in the Zocalo you can see the Municipal Palace which is an excellent example of the Spanish-French renaissance architecture.  After this, you can see the Museo Universitario, also known as Casa de los Muneco or Doll House, built in the 1600s.  This Museum was built using red brick and hand-made talavera tiles; talavera is a white and glazed type of ceramic used for vases, decorations, and so on.  Special cartoons are painted on the tiles, and this is what gives the museum the name of House of Dolls.  Following this is the Iglesia Del Espiritu Santo where the local folk hero, La China Poblana, is buried.  This church was built in 1578 and inside you can appreciate the Iberian-Muslim style and Italian facade.  Another establishment you can’t miss is Biblioteca Palafoxiana-Casa de la Cultura.  This place, built in 1646, is often host to many cultural events.  The second story is the one that houses the library and this you must see to believe.  It houses over fifty thousand books neatly organized in shelves carved out of cedar wood; the floors are decorated with a unique red-colored tile, and wait ‘till you see the desks.  The desks are embedded with onyx!  After this marvel, you’ll soon find yourself staring at the Greek-Roman style of Puebla’s oldest house known as Casa del Dean.  Inside you can stare even longer at the incredible murals that remained unseen until their discovery in 1930.  Onyx seemed to be quite popular in Puebla’s churches, for some of these including Iglesia de San Cristobal and Iglesia de Santo Domingo-Capilla del Rosario feature onyx- encrusted or onyx-covered decorations.  If you’re an admirer of religious art you must visit the Ex-Convento de Santa Monica (Ex or Former Convent of Saint Monica), which used to be a hidden convent and as so you must cross through a house and a hall in order to get to it.  One particularly interesting sight is an image of Jesus Christ on the cavalry or his crucifixion; it can be seen inside the Templo de Santa Monica.

Lastly, one can’t mention that fact that Puebla is surrounded by three well-known volcanoes, with the following indigenous names: Popocatepetl, Matlacueyatl (also known as La Malinche), and Iztaccihuatl.  So do not be alarm to suddenly see a light breeze of ashes.  But more soothing is the thought of fresh summer showers, as they’re very common here.  So dress lightly, pack a sweater, wear comfy shoes, and don’t forget your umbrella!  But before you pack, see it first at www.patawalk.com!

For those couples seeking a variety of romantic wedding venues for your winter weddings, look no further than the state of California, where you have beautiful ocean views, gorgeous snowy mountains, and wonderful wineries at your disposal.

Have your Winter Wedding at the Ocean

When most people think of a California beach location, they think of the “usual suspects”: San Diego, La Jolla, Santa Monica or Santa Barbara. And, of course, those are all great spots for a beach wedding. But, you may also want to consider some other fabulous coastal venues as well:

Avila Beach: Avila Beach is located near San Luis Obispo, just a 40-mile drive away from Hearst Castle. Also located nearby are 3 championship golf courses and the wine country of Paso Robles and Edna Valley. The Avila Lighthouse Suites, a 54-suite resort, offers intimate wedding packages, as well as packages for larger weddings up to 120 guests.

Pismo Beach: South of Avila Beach on the 101 sits Pismo Beach. There are pricey resorts in Pismo Beach, as well as some very affordable wedding venues. One very affordable wedding venue in Pismo Beach is The Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge, located on the northern end of Pismo Beach, away from the center of town and all the tourist activity. It’s also a part of Pismo Beach where you get cliffs and a more craggy ocean view – which makes for some pretty spectacular wedding photos. The Best Western Shelter Cove Lodge offers a couple locations on their property for weddings, both with awesome ocean views: The Wedding Garden for seating up to 80 guests; and the Panoramic Gazebo with standing room for up to 25 guests.

Pacific Grove: Pacific Grove is a beautiful little town in the Monterey Peninsula, sometimes overshadowed by nearby Monterey and Carmel. But, it’s home to Lover’s Point, which has been called “One of the top 10 most romantic places in America” by Sunset Magazine. With the beautiful lawn and cypress trees overlooking the Pacific Ocean, it’s easy to see why this is such a sought-after spot for couples to tie the knot. It’s also close to the scenic 17-Mile Drive and golf courses of Pebble Beach.

Have your Winter Wedding in the Snow

Yes, California boasts wonderful weather and great beaches. But, California is also home to some wonderful mountain resort areas which make for great winter weddings:

Lake Tahoe: If it’s a snowy winter wedding you want, Lake Tahoe is where you want to go. And, if you’re both skiers, you may want to check out the Heavenly Ski Wedding Package, which includes a wedding in a secluded spot overlooking Lake Tahoe, after which you ski down the mountain as a newly-married couple. You can call 877-889-6379 for more information.

If you wish to wed in a simple, inexpensive ceremony, you might want to call 888-wed-tahoe for the Lakefront Wedding Chapel Specials walk-in special rate, which includes a wedding at one their elegant chapel locations, video or photos of the wedding, a complimentary bottle of champagne and minister’s fee. This package is for 6 people or less.

Big Bear Lake: Big Bear is a Southern California winter playground, and wedding destination favorite, located within driving distance of Los Angeles and San Diego. One unique place you may want to consider for your Big Bear wedding is the StarGAzers Inn, which is also an observatory, offering celestial-themed weddings. They are opened year round.

Have your Winter Wedding at a Winery

The scenery and weather are not the only things which attract people to California. People also come for the wine and the wineries, which makes winery weddings very desirable.

Paso Robles: Paso Robles is known for outstanding wines, particularly their Zinfandels and Syrahs. Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles is California’s fastest-growing wine region, with nearly 26,000 vineyard acres and more than 170 wineries within a 40-mile territory. It’s also a wonderful place for a winery wedding. A few winery wedding venues of note include: Meridian Vineyards and Zenaida Cellars, both of which have barrel rooms available for weddings; and Robert Hall Winery, which offers their wine caverns, which can accommodate up to 200 people.

Sonoma County: Just next door to the Napa Valley wine country sits Sonoma County with its outstanding wineries and beautiful country. One winery you may consider for your wedding is the Buena Vista Winery, which is California’s oldest premium winery. It’s located just 5 minutes from Sonoma’s Plaza Square, and is a California Historic Landmark. You can choose to hold your ceremony in their rustic stone Press House, built in 1862, or outdoors in their secluded, wooded area.

Dual Purpose Riding the Lost Coast

By: Edward Ospital

About the Author

A veteren of motorcycling for 24 + years, Ed Ospital considers his native Northern California roads among the best in the world. His 14 years in the Army (and counting) have enabled him to ride throughout North America and Europe. Although he has favored BMW motorcycles for the past decade he has returned to his roots as a Kawasaki rider. Keeping that theme, Ed has also returned to his roots carving the roads of the North, South, and East Bay.

The Lost Coast

The day had finally arrived to ride the Lost Coast. Immediately upon being stationed back in Northern California I traded in my BMW RT 1100 for a 2008 KLR 650. What better route for an inaugural ride? After many years of “hotel” touring I was transitioning back to my “pack it light, freeze at night” mode of travel. The Usal Road and Lost Coast road conditions were an unknown. The winter months of 2008 had seen a lot of rain on the North Coast near Eureka California and my research indicated that the roads could be impassable if wet.  Would the KLR be able to conquer what the King’s Range and Sinkyone Wilderness threw our way in late March? To hedge my bets I packed two motorcycle tie down straps that could possible double as tow straps. My riding partner for this trip would be a college roommate from 19 years ago. Glenn had called the day prior with a cryptic, “I’ve bought something that will handle anything the road will throw at us.” Cryptic messages are usually never good. Maybe the extra space the straps would take was cheap insurance. Where we were going Triple A would fear to tread.

Sunday’s early morning start was delayed until 3:00 pm due to Easter commitments. The afternoon came and went. I received a call from Glenn that his new mystery machine would not start. Certainly a dark harbinger of things to come. The afternoon ticked by and 5:00 pm turned to 7:00 pm. Glenn limped into Rohnert Park, CA around 8:30 pm, cold, lost but armed with a hearty appetite and an equally hearty and upbeat attitude; definitely the kind of partner  and attitude you need when venturing into the unknown. The said mystery machine came in the form of a 1985 KLR 600! The 0.00 museum piece was a steal until the hard starting bike continued to flood the aftermarket two stroke carburetor and killed the battery (steal was the right term but only time would tell who the victim was). Ever resilient, Glenn fixed the problem that Sunday and forged ahead from Sacramento to Sonoma County. My mom was all too happy to feed the tired road warrior with a home cooked meal. We modified the game plan that night and decided not to ride the Trinity Heritage National Scenic Highway (also known as Hwy 299/3) and the Bigfoot Scenic Byway (Hwy 96) loop out of Eureka. The bikes were prepped and ready despite a little incident with my newly purchased mount. I realized I shouldn’t have procrastinated in purchasing a center stand. While filling the tires earlier in the day the bike fell over as I pushed on the stems with a bit too much vigor. To the KLR’s credit, the new plastic radiator shrouds withstood the tip over and the “Bug” (as my daughter calls it) came away with only two minor scratches.

The next morning we headed north on Hwy 101 in the early Northern California chill, the two extremes of the KLR spectrum thumping along in harmony. At 8:30am we decided to pull into Cloverdale and have a quick bite at the local McDonalds. An old timer took an interest in our trip and told us how he used to race his Harley Davidson against the British invasion of BSA’s back in 1949 but lost to the lighter, faster bikes when it came to cross country racing. Over coffee talk turned to younger days. We shared our experience in the Cavalry (Glenn a pilot in the Air Cav, I a ground scout, and Don a sixteen year old Horse Cavalryman back in 1938). Soon after his horse cavalry days Don was prowling the South China Sea. His new ride was the USS Snapper, a 1928 era sub that made it out of Manila Harbor prior to the fall of the Philippines. He wished he could join us on our bike trip but his knee replacement was in a few days. Any adventure we would encounter paled to his depth charge experiences during the war. We thanked him for his sacrifices and service to country as we headed northwest.

The bikes made quick work of Hwy 128 to Mendocino as we fell into a smooth pace through the vineyards and redwood trees. At Fort Bragg we attempted to find a dirt route east towards Glenblair and back to 101 in order to shake down our load plans and bikes. We were thwarted by dead ends and gated access but rewarded by the single lane dirt roads. Doubling back we proceed up Hwy 1 picking up the pace, energized by the crashing waves and redwoods. Passing Rockport we scanned for Hwy 435/Usal Road but were so enamored with this part of Hwy 101 that we were nearly in Leggett before we discovered we had missed our turn. Backtracking we found 431. If it wasn’t for the fact that we knew it was at mile marker 90.88 we never would have found it. The start point looked like a private dirt drive. How this used to be a stagecoach route is beyond me. They must have gone through multiple teams given the steep hills and rough conditions. The views were stunning as we peered down on the Pacific. Accompanying the breathtaking scenery was a chance encounter with a bear cub ambling across the road. Startled by the “Bug’s” growl he ran back to mama and we continued our journey. The KLR weren’t challenged by the roads and we thought the estimated 3 hrs to reach Shelter Cove was an erroneous estimate. We would soon learn 6 hrs was barely enough. I also discovered that years of “hoteling” had taught me to over pack my Givi top case. The first and only flaw of my KLR became evident when Glenn yelled for me to stop. Rolling down the hill was my Givi and half my KLR luggage rack! The tie down straps were pressed into service sooner than I had expected.

Soon we encountered the first of many delays. Mud, and lots of it. The KLR’s could not make it through the think soup, rear ends spinning out of control and flopping on their sides. Glenn and I ported our gear when necessary and then manhandled our mounts, pushing and cursing the machines through the muck. At the worse point, after we found a bypass to a seemingly impassable portion of the road, Mark from San Jose (in a tricked out Jeep-the only other human encounter on the scenic roadway), destroyed the bypass (for bikes at least) as his Jeep chewed up the ground. Bouncing off a tree he succeeded but erased any notions of turning back. For better or worse we were committed. No further than 200 yards down the Usal Road we were forced to unload the KLR’s again and push our mounts as the rider “paddled” along a foot and half wide path. A fall to the right and the bikes would disappear below the murky surface like the USS Snapper did to evade the Japanese warships seeking revenge. A fall to the left and the KLR’s would tumble down the cliff face to the Pacific.    Riding the bikes across the narrow path was too risky as the path itself was muddy and the tires could possibly slip. A few adrenaline filled heartbeats later, the bikes were safely across, loaded and moving at speed. Usal Road might support KTM Adventures and BMW GS’s in the dry seasons but in the winter months anything larger than a KLR would be difficult to navigate the numerous mud bogs. The bigger bikes would be exhausting to manhandle through calf high mud. When we finally reached Usal Beach we were rewarded by pristine beaches. The ocean front was all but abandoned and the KLR’s proved capable of crossing numerous streams as we explored the beaches. The “Bug” loved the fresh ocean air but the KLR 600 began to show her warts. On the last stretch prior to reaching Shelter Cove the KLR 600 quite running on one of the steepest parts of the route. Glenn rolled his chicken bones and sprinkled blood on the carburetor with no luck. Un-strapping one of the tie down straps from my Givi I hooked it to the 600 and the “Bug” transformed to “El Burro” as I towed the 600 up the hill. A day of many first. A quick dance to the motorcycle gods and the 600 fired up and we were Shelter Cove bound. The night at Shelter Cove was one of the most beautiful I have spent on the Northern California coast. The wind was totally absent and the stars shone brighter than the light in the decommissioned lighthouse. A couple of touches of Kentucky Bourbon made the night complete.

A late start on day two due to Glenn locking his clothes in the dryer room and a non-responsive “steal of a bike” delayed us until 10:30. I began to sense who was the victim on this purchase and it wasn’t the “master mechanic” in Sacramento who sold Glenn the bike. Another quart of chicken blood and his bike roared to life. We entered King’s Range Road and crossed into another world. The range had received more than its average share of rainfall that winter. The fog shrouding the greenery reminded us of the rainforest of Costa Rica and Ecuador. Taking a wrong turn we followed the rocky dead end road to the Lightening Trailhead. The rocks took a toll on our tires but the scenery was worth the cost in rubber. The tight, twisty, uphill, climb on the way to Honeydew was one of the best parts of the trip. It was only challenged by the route from Petrolia to Ferndale. This portion of road twisted along the shore and then paralleled the crashing waves. Glenn played the part of ranch hand as he herded an errant cow off the road and back into the field on his temperamental steed. Anything can be thrown your way on the Lost Coast.

Leaving the ocean behind us, we quickly climbed 2,400 ft. to Bunker Hill and then descended into a beautiful valley. As we crossed Bear River were it emptied into the ocean, Glenn pointed to the switchbacks climbing the hill. I pumped my arm in response and rolled on the throttle. In the ensuing climb we became one with our machines to the point where it felt as if the bikes disappeared and we were “skiing” through the picturesque Northern California scenery. The environment was a mix of Switzerland and Southern England, the narrow two lane roads lined with shrubs, trees, and cattle racing by. We were sad to see the Lost Coast disappear in our rear view mirrors but looked forward to exploring Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the Avenue of the Giants, and the Eel River.

Unable to find a camp ground in Eureka we headed to Fortuna were the KLR 600 died on Main Street. Coaxing the bike to life Glenn met me at the RV park were we secured a log cabin for a pittance. Money well spent considering the rainfall that night. After filling our belly’s with our fair share of ale at the Eel River Brewery, Glenn filled his ego flirting with the very attractive female body builder bartender. We needed sleep as the road began to take its toll. Tomorrow would be very trying for us both.

The next morning the KLR was DOA but Glenn was loathe to admit it. After coaxing him into getting a U-Haul we doubled up on the “Bug” and made our way through Ferndale. We were already pushing 11:30 am so time was a factor as work loomed the next day. In route Glenn spotted an ATV and Tire shop. Tom, the owner and mechanic, took pity on us and gave us the keys to his truck and the KLR 600 received a new lease on life. In two hours we were rolling south on Hwy 101 thanks to Tom and his prompt attention. Although this was my fourth time down the Avenue of the Giants, I was amazed by the 40 miles of beauty. The coup de grace was when we received a free “Drive thru Tree” experience by a fellow KLR rider.

The low point came 11 miles north of Laytonville. The KLR 600 gave up its ninth life and died on the west side of 101. Suspecting fuel starvation I made desperation run to Laytonville for gas. False hope as the bike had pulled itself off of life support.  A CHP officer radioed a tow truck which arrived at 6:30 pm and Glenn was on his own. Facing 35F weather  and a 2 hr plus ride from Laytonville I raced south. Two things helped me survive that trip; the Hotgrips on my KLR and singing every cadence at the top of my lungs. By 8:40 pm I was eating hot chow on the objective while Glenn was writing a new chapter on motorcycling on the edge. A day and a half later he made it back to Sacramento. A story best told over several cold beers.

For pure diversity of terrain, vegetation, animal and road conditions nothing can beat the Lost Coast of California. Dual purpose riding milks the most fun per mile than pretty much any bike I have ever ridden. Despite all the web noise about the fairing falling apart due to vibration and the new KLR consuming quarts of oil, it is simply has not happened with this bike. Despite an operator induced tip over, the KLR fairing survived an encounter with a concrete parking block and after 2,000 miles the “Bug” has not consumed any oil. The KLR will remain in the stable regardless of whatever type bike comes along in the future. For pure versatility and “bang for the buck” fun, this bike cannot be beat.

A Holistic Approach to Combat Identification by Maj Edward Ospital and Maj Adam Wojack

As a technological driven society the “silver bullet” solution is seductive but is not the answer we seek to mitigate the occurrence of fratricide. The CID issue before us focuses on sorting entities on the battlefield so; 1) enemy forces can be destroyed; 2) friendly entities can be identified and not become the victim of a fratricide and 3) neutral entities can be identified to prevent collateral damage.

Towards the Provinces of the Levant in Cuba

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Towards the Provinces of the Levant in Cuba

While your cuba vacations, after leaving Santa Lucia Beach, we suggest going towards the East of Cuba. Traveling along the Northern coast, you have made a tour very infrequent in the country, very different from the itinerary usually suggested in tourist brochures.

Before 1976, Cuba had only six provinces. That year the new Administrative Political Division was promulgated and the number of provinces increased from six to fourteen; that is to say, the country started to have fourteen provinces. Of those six first old provinces, Oriente was the largest. From it, five new provinces appeared: Las Tunas, Holguin, Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba and Granma. They are all in the East of Cuba and it is to these provinces that you are heading.

These provinces actually defer from the rest of Cuba in several ways. For instance, from the physical and geographical point of view they have the biggest concentration of small bays, including that of Nipe, the largest in Cuba. Also, the largest amount of navigating rivers for small boats engaged in local transportation, including the river with the largest flow in Cuba, the Toa, and the longest one, the Cauto, which also has the biggest basin in the country, suitable for navigation in part of its course. The fluvial cannons are also remarkable, particularly in the Eastern part of these elevations. In some large rivers next to Baracoa, long deltas with an arrow shape known as ¨tibaracones¨ can be found in the river mouths, which are unique in Cuba.

Towards the Easternmost part is Baracoa, the first village founded by the Spanish colonists and the only place in Cuba where it rains all the year round. This area is part of the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountain range, one of the most mountainous and elevated areas of the country, besides displaying the richest biological variety not only of Cuba but also of the whole Caribbean and one of the most important places in the world regarding the concentration of endemic species. That is the reason for its great importance from the bio-geographic point of view.

Among these endemic species, the Almiquí (Solenodon Cubanus), insectivorous and very primitive, is remarkable. It should be pointed out that it is thought that the Royal Woodpecker (Campephilus Principalis Bairdi), still lives in those elevations, considered the largest-size woodpecker in the whole planet. Besides, these mountains are the sanctuary where the mollusks of the Polymita type are located, considered the most beautiful in the world.

In this mountain range, the only stone bridge in Cuba can be found, the Bitirí, over the river of the same name, declared National Monument. There are also the National Parks La Mensura (still to be declared), Pico Cristal and Alejandro de Humboldt. Next to them is the most important area of multi-metal mineral deposits in Cuba, among them nickel, cobalt and manganese, and others.

Also the largest mountain range in Cuba is located in these provinces, the Sierra Maestra, which has several peaks that exceed the 1000 meters of height, where the National Parks La Bayamesa, Desembarco del Granma and Turquino are. The latter occupies part of the highest mountain in Cuba: the Turquino Royal Peak, with about 1962 meters over the sea level. This is also where the deepest waters next to the Cuban coasts are, in the so called Fosa de Bartlett (Bartlett Pit), at almost 2000 meters of depth.

All along the Southern coast are the places where the earthquakes are more frequent, although of low intensity. Particularly in the Western section of the Southern coast there is the narrowest and longest coastal plain of the country, bordered by a mountain system and crossed by a road where numerous volcanic rocks show ( granites, basalts, etc), during the whole trajectory. Also in the South are the most important systems of marine terraces in the Caribbean where the National Park Desembarco del Granma (Granma landing) is. Because of its natural wonders, it was declared Natural Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO, in the category Natural Landscape of Mankind.

We should also point out that in the Southern coast are the only vegetable formations in the whole Caribbean which are similar to the vegetation of true deserts. Even in the highest hills of the Sierra Maestra you can find two vegetable formations unique in the country: the Monte Nublado (Cloudy Hill) and the Monte Fresco (Cool Hill).

From the social and cultural point of view the Southern area also has numerous elements of great interest. For instance, several museums of natural history, of the history of the Wars of Independence against the Spanish power and of passages of the Cuban Revolution, of outstanding personalities of the country, architectural styles and Cuban ways of life. You can find them not only in the province capitals but in the nearby cities and places of interest; among them, Baracoa, Gibara, Puerto Padre, Banes, Baconao and Manzanillo. We will provide more information about them when we suggest their visit.

All these places will be recommended because of their great importance; one of them, Bariay, Holguín, is the place where Christopher Columbus landed for the first time in Cuba, in 1492. Also, the Santa Iphigenia Cemetery, in Santiago de Cuba, where the remains of Jose Martí, the Apostle of Cuba rest. It would be interesting to visit La Demajagua, in Granma province, the place where the declaration of the War of Independence against Spain was made, as well as the family house of Fidel and Raúl Castro, a sample of the wooden architecture at that time, in Biran, Holguin.

It was in the provinces located in the South where most of the refugees from Haiti came at the triumph of the Haitian Revolution in 1791. The ruins of the old French coffee plantations are magnificent, as their influence on the Cuban culture of those provinces is deep. The cultural expressions of these areas are very much related to this influence, among them La Tumba Francesa (the French Drum) of which UNESCO praises its state of preservation, protection and the importance given to this cultural form by the Cuban State.

This part of Cuba is also the most closely related to the Caribbean culture, to such an extent that Santiago de Cuba is known as the Balcony of the Caribbean because of its great affinity with the Caribbean musical rhythms, much more so than the rest of Cuba. The carnivals in these provinces are different from the rest of the country. In this city, the Caribbean Festival, also known as the Fire Party, ingrained in the Caribbean culture, is held in July.

It is suggested to start your tour next to the Northern coast, visiting the center of the provinces to see their capitals as in Las Tunas and Holguin, while in the rest of the mentioned provinces, which are more mountainous, you follow the Northern coast and then towards the South, passing the mountain ranges through roads where the landscapes are wonderful. One of the most outstanding is La Farola, a road unique in Cuba. You will enjoy all of it in next articles.

Garden furniture is becoming more popular than ever. Outdoor living has become an extension of indoor living, and today’s garden furniture is a reflection of that.

At one time, garden furniture consisted primarily of iron, wood or concrete benches, and wrought iron café table and chair sets. Later, folding aluminum lawn chairs and lounges were the most common outdoor furniture. The aluminum frames were covered with strips of nylon strapping that was woven together in a basket weave to make seats and backs, and then bolted to the frames.

During the seventies, having a wood sun deck was in vogue, and a wider variety of outdoor furniture was in fashion. A common style was redwood furniture featuring removable cushions with water resistant coverings. Redwood deck furniture often came in sets, with loveseats, chairs, coffee tables, end tables. Adirondack chairs were also commonly found, and were favored among the do-it-yourselfers who proudly built their chairs to match their decks.

The current trend in garden furniture is in furnishing outdoor “rooms” that are very much like a living room or dining room that would be found inside the house, only in an outdoor version. Much of this furniture needs to be protected from the environment, and so work best on a covered patio, under a covered trellis, or inside one of the popular canvas gazebos. In cooler climates a sun room or all-season room may be used when weather does not allow for outdoor activities.

The canvas gazebos are usually square or hexagonal shaped frames of wood, aluminum or steel covered by a canvas topper. The sides feature canvas drapes that can be left open to let the air in, or pulled closed for protection from the elements. Many of them also come with mesh curtains that can be pulled closed to allow in fresh air and sunshine while keeping bugs and pests out.

The garden furniture of today may have very thick cushions with luxurious cloth covers. Coffee tables and end tables can have glass, tile, slate or mosaic tops in addition to wood or metal tops. Garden “rooms”, whether on a covered patio or inside a gazebo, are usually furnished with the same sort of decorative items one would expect to find in an indoor room, such as throw pillows, lamps, candles, wall hangings, plants and flower arrangements. Decorative bowls, pottery or other designer pieces may adorn tables, and even rugs may be used in more temperate climates. Outdoor rooms might also feature an outdoor fireplace, fountain or a bar for serving beverages.

Another trend is to build a small wood shed or one room “cottages,” furnishing them to serve as guest rooms, studios or home offices. These outbuildings have become actual rooms that are a cross between indoor and open air outdoor living. In warmer climates, some people may construct a large permanent tent on wood or concrete floors. With electrical hookups, these tents can also feature all the comforts of indoor living with the feeling of being outdoors in the garden.
