California vacation rentals provide perfect accommodations for your California vacation. From the first documented European visit to California to today, the state’s attractions are as diverse as its landscape. There are the craggy peaks of the High Sierras & the vineyards of Napa Valley. Extending along much of the U.S. Pacific Coastline, there are miles of beaches from San Diego to the rockier coast & redwoods of Northern California. There are great cultural attractions in the San Francisco & Los Angeles areas. The Central Coast offers a variety of resort getaways in Big Sur & Monterey Bay, while across the state Lake Tahoe is popular as are the golf courses of Palm Springs & the desert area. And we’ll help you cut through the marketing fluff to find the best California vacation rentals for you and your family. All you have to do is set your budget and decide where you want to go in the Golden State.

Budget-friendly vacation rentals in Los Angeles give you a glimpse of the glamorous life without breaking the bank. By day, visit Sunset Boulevard, Venice Beach, or the Getty Center—then return to your Los Angeles rental house for a dip in its private pool. Whether you want to live like a movie star in a Hollywood Hills rental bungalow or work on your tan at a beach house in Santa Monica, there’s a Southern California vacation rental for you. Besides if you are looking forward for a great ski vacation in Lake Tahoe, try a budget cabin in South Lake Tahoe, a luxury rental on the marina, or a Lake Tahoe vacation house with room for your whole family.

Moving further Palm Springs is known for its mid-century modern architecture—if you’re a fan; why not experience it close-up by renting a vacation home in Palm Springs? You’ll find plenty of luxury Palm Springs vacation homes and California desert rentals with private pools. Or opt for a budget condo in Palm Desert and save money for the slots at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage.

If you are looking for rooms for larger group or looking for a romantic weekend gateway than spacious vacation rentals in Napa Valley or a luxury rental home in Sonoma Valley would be perfect. Wine connoisseurs might want to look into a limo wine-tasting tour (so no one gets stuck driving). And if you want to burn off some of the calories in that chardonnay, head outdoors. California vacation rentals in Wine Country make it easy for you to bike, hike or kayak in some of the most beautiful countryside you’ve ever seen.

Rent a California condo, villa, or vacation rental and you’ll have complete access to the beautiful coastline, snowy peaks, lush forests, expansive deserts, and bustling cities of the Golden State.

Those looking for a good value in an all-inclusive conference center will find it here in the mountains of Northern California. Stanford Sierra Conference Center has attracted a wide variety of educational, scientific, social and corporate groups to the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake since 1905, when the facility served as a family camp for Stanford professors and alumni. The Old Lodge was built in 1932, and with its charming hardwood floor, high ceiling and stone fireplace, it is still in use. Set in the beautiful wilderness near South Lake Tahoe, California, the center still retains the serene natural splendor that has drawn groups here for generations.
If California were an independent nation it would have the world’s 7th largest economy. What better place to hold your next conference than the state that has so much to offer, from leading universities and business to natural beauty and a supremely talented work force? Just as California means business, so do we. Today, you’ll find an amazing facility offering 5 state of the art conference rooms with full audio/visual setups. The Angora Room and the Cathedral Room are approximately 2,000 square feet, boasting 9-foot ceilings and offering plenty of natural light. The Cathedral Room even has a fireplace. The Dinning Room has a beautifully crafted cathedral ceiling with open beams and chandeliers; it is our largest space at 3,667 square feet. In contrast, the Tallac Room is our smallest space at 350 square feet. Finally, we have the cozy Old Lodge Room at 720 square feet with great views and an attractive fireplace. Our conference, dinning and lodging facilities can comfortably accommodate up to 180 people.
Stanford Sierra Conference Center is an all-inclusive facility. Prices include three sumptuous meals daily, prepared under the supervision of our California Culinary Academy trained Chef Dave Dennis. You establish the schedule and Dave creates the menus from the very simple to elegant gourmet dinning. We make it our mission to see to every detail, from shuttle service, dining, to in-room massages, in order to make sure you and your group are free to focus on what’s important. However, with a boat dock, facilitated ropes course, great Mackinaw, Brown, Rainbow trout and Kokanee salmon fishing in the lake, miles of hiking trails and high-speed wireless, we have resources necessary to enrich and enhance your group’s experience. The center also has basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a playground for the kids, and complimentary sailboats, kayaks and canoes available at our boat dock. You can also find a plethora of fun activities nearby, like horseback riding, mountain bike riding, and great golfing.
With all-inclusive accommodation packages starting at 2 per person, per day, Stanford Sierra Conference Center presents an unbeatable value. The center is available from late April to mid-June and early September to late November, with 52 cabins plus twelve single rooms. Furthermore, we’re able to offer exclusive use of the conference center to groups of 100 or more in the fall and 80 or more in the spring. Stanford Sierra’s relaxed atmosphere promotes inspiration and a focus on your meeting content. It’s the perfect setting for valuable networking and idea sharing opportunities among meeting attendees. Our dedicated staff, amazing facility and great value make it a must for you to have your next conference in California.

If it is vacation diversity and culture that you just look for in preparing for your forthcoming dream holiday, then Mexico might just be the perfect place for you to go to. From the crystalline oceans in the Caribbean and the Pacific, on the Mesoamerican ruins, along with the colonial urban centers – this land provides a wide variety of destinations that would undoubtedly capture your interest.

Mexico boasts of having a large tourism industry, and is recognized throughout the globe. Its temperate climate, attractive seashore resorts as well as it distinctive culture draws a great deal of visitors from various nations particularly during the high season of December, July and August.

Regardless of what sort of journey you most appreciate, this position has something to offer you. Divers would surely marvel at the good thing about the Caribbean coasts that harbor the Mayan reef. Apart from the well-known diving spots in Cancún and Cozumel, the Pacific coast also invites diving enthusiast to visit Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.

If your idea of a good holiday involves radiant beaches and a great deal of fun, then Acapulco can be a should on your itinerary. Make certain you catch the breathtaking diving exhibition of the La Quebrada cliff divers, who jump removed from outrageously higher cliffs leaving you in awe.

Mexico City, despite the hustle and bustle of getting the world’s third biggest town, cradles the historic center Plaza de la Constitucion. Guadalajara, the second biggest town, offers a setting totally different from the country’s capital. Fine music, fine tequila, lively Mexican hat dance | these are just some of the things this fine city has to brag about. Eco-friendly pursuits inside rural areas also draw increasing attention from travelers who have appreciation for nature.

Becoming a large country, there is an array of destinations that you might opt to fit your preference. Whichever you decide to travel to, traveling here will certainly create memories for you to cherish. So brush up on your Spanish and get ready to have a blast!

Safety Tip:

Travelers really should avoid some areas in this region where drug-related aggression is prevalent. Noted are the states of Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, and northern Baja California. Even though holidaymakers aren’t particularly targeted, it is better to check current government warnings/advisories prior to arranging your trip.

Travel Rotorua

This article is a basic tour guide to traveling in Rotorua highlight and evaluating the main sites in the district.

Introduction:

If you had only one day in the North Island of New Zealand and you asked me where should one go for that day I would without hesitation say Rotorua.

This article is my personal guide to Rotorua from someone who has visited it more times than I can remember and if given the chance I would visit it again. Location:

Rotorua is approximately 2.5 – 3 hours drive south of Auckland. Head south through Hamilton and Cambridge, or for a quicker route via Mata Mata. Shortly after Cambridge turn left and take the number 5 which will lead you right to Rotorua. Coming up from Wellington head to Lake Taupo and take the number 5 to Rotorua. Train and Bus routes also service Rotorua.

Attractions:

Rotorua is a jewel in the North Island, with geothermal wonders, a center of Maori Culture, Parks, Lakes, Natural History and numerous modern day attractions. Most visitors comment on the smell when they arrive. It is Hydrogen Sulphide (rotten egg gas) and while distinct at first, if you stay for any length of time you will adapt and seldom notice it.

Geothermal Parks

The main geothermal parks in Rotorua and its surrounds include Whakarewarewa thermal area, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Waitapu Thermal wonderland, Orakei Korako Geyserland and Hell’s Gate. All these required payment.

Whakarewarewa:

Visiting this site used to be standard fare in any visit to Rotorua. Unfortunately the park has now divided into two parts, and I personally don’t believe either site has enough to stand alone. So what you used to get for one entry price now costs two (be warned). On the Hemo Road entrance is the NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute with its master carvers. Also includes a weaving house, kiwi house, and Maori meeting house. Pohutu (big splash) and the Prince of Wales geyser are also on this side. (Prince of Wales geyser so named because the 3 directions the geyser shoots out resembles the feathers on the Prince of Wales crest). On the Tyron street entrance you get another meeting house where a cultural show is put on, a village, shops and some hot pools, etc. Also here outside school hours you may find the local Maori children willing to jump off the bridge into the stream below in return for chasing your loose change thrown into the same.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley:

A nice walk along a valley with numerous hot pools, lakes, and near the end of the track the Warbrick thermal terrace – a multi coloured silica terrace, probably the most colourful terrace in Rotorua. Worth a visit if you have already seen some thermal parks and want more, or like a more expansive tour, you can link with a boat tour. (see the gallery for some photos courtesy Waimangu’s website). The pink and white terraces once existed in the area prior to the 1886 eruption.

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland:

My personal favourite, about 20 min. south of Rotorua towards Taupo. Be prepared to walk abit. Numerous rainbow pools, the huge champagne pool, artist palette, sulphur vents, boiling mud and a huge silica terrace. If you arrive early in the morning, before 10am, a short drive leads you to the Lady Knox geyser that gets set off once a day by them feeding it with soap, cost of this is included in your admission (was an adult). Also on this road is a natural mud pool which is the best display of boiling mud I have seen and its free.

Orakei Korako Geyserland:

Closer to Lake Taupo than Rotorua on a side road connecting route 5 to the main route 1. You need to catch the ferry across the lake to begin exploring the park. Like most of the parks good tracks requiring you to walk to see mud pools, a large cave, the emerald terrace and the largest silica feature in the country. Worth the visit if you are passing that way.

Hell’s Gate:

Another thermal park with numerous boiling things, including Adam’s frying pan, a mud volcano, hot water falls and one of the few places I found I could buy the multi-colour sand in a glass container (quite pretty). Once visited by Mark Twain who stated he would have gladly paid not to have gone there. I’ll have to disagree; I think it’s worth the visit.

Maori Culture

Rotorua has plenty of Maori based attractions. These include Tamaki Maori Village (I’ve yet to visit). The NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute (already spoken about), the Buried Village and numerous Hungi and Cultural Performances.

The Buried village is what it sounds like, a half buried village. During the 1886 eruption a number of local Maori perished buried in mud. Some of the village has since been dig out and rebuilt to give tourists an idea of a Maori village.

I haven’t been to Tamaki Maori Village so can’t give a review.

If you really want to get a good taste of Maori culture food and hospitality then book one of the many feasts and concerts put on by the local hotels. The food, music and friendship are always top rate.

Other Attractions

Rainbow Springs Park:

A nice park with trout fish as its centerpiece, beautiful clear running water and a top bushland. Lovely walking tracks and you can feed the fish. Also has a farm show attached.

Skyline Skyrides:

The main reason to take this ride on a gondola is not just to get to the top for the view, the main reason is to ride the luge. Massive fun, as long as you don’t fall off. They have a small chairlift operating so that you can ride the luge for as long as your budget can afford.

Agrodome:

Everything you wanted to know about sheep. Surprising a show about sheep and farming in NZ is interesting and entertaining.

Rotorua Museum of Art:

One of the first buildings built in NZ solely with tourists in mind. Originally built as a bath house and hot water treatment center it has now been converted. Good museum but the highlight is the movie on local history, sit down and be sure to be holding on – a total multimedia experience. Definite must do. The building itself is one of the finest examples of Edwardian design and is an art piece in itself. The surrounding gardens are always nicely maintained.

Natures Wonders

There are numerous things to do, totally free for nature lovers.

Huka Falls:

Just North from Lake Taupo on the M1 is Huka Falls and the world famous Huka Falls Lodge (for the novu-rich of the world). Huka Falls itself is free for all. Near the beginning of the mighty Waikato river (NZ longest river) it’s not the height of the falls but the sheer volume of water that is forced through which is impressive, few people have gone over the falls and survived. Boat trips are now run up to the base of the falls for those wanting a different perspective.

Whakarewarewa Forrest Park:

On the road to the blue and green lakes. Contains beautiful stands of redwood trees, walking and horse riding tracks. The redwood trees are relatively young for trees, but they are already huge in size.

Government Gardens:

Outside the Rotorua museum is well kept flower beds, rose gardens, bowling greens and more.

Kuirau Park:

Opposite the main hospital on Kuirau road is Kuirau Park with numerous boiling pools and geothermal activities. Contains some foot pools to ease your sore feet and a children’s park with miniature railway. On my last visit there was a huge hole in the ground and several trees blown over or covered in mud due to a localized eruption. It is a reminder the whole area is geothermally active and has the potential to be dangerous.

Blue and Green Lakes:

Past Whakarewarewa Forrest Park is the blue lake, great for swimming or boating activities, clear water with a pumice bottom, those further out there is a problem with weeds. Keep going on the road to get a view of Mt. Tarawera. The green lake is banned and tapu (Maori for cursed, sacred, special) and no is supposed to enter it.

Mt. Tarawera:

For the true adventure fanatics. Take the back road and climb Mount Tarawera. Enter the crater and run down to the bottom at full speed. The massive crater was caused by the 10 June 1886 eruption which destroyed the pink and white terraces and buried many villages.

Lakes:

The number of lakes is simply too many to mention. Great for trout fishing, boating or picnics. Some lakes even have black volcanic glass and/or pumice stone lying on their shores.

Hamurana Springs:

If you want to see a beautiful spring feed stream, this is worth a visit, pure water with a hint of blue flowing over white pumice bed. There is also a nice stand of redwoods and I would be surprised if you didn’t’ see any trout in the stream (no fishing allowed, sorry).

This list is by no means exhaustive and like any tourist destination new venues are always opening up. I hope this provides you with a basic to do list when visiting.

One of the most versatile soundproofing materials in the industry is closed cell vinyl nitrile foam mat. This foam is weather resistant as well as flame retardant and is used in more outdoor applications than any other soundproofing product. Closed cell foam is used in marine applications to quiet noisy engine rooms where there is a wet bilge to contend with. This foam is virtually indestructible and when used in conjunction with mass loaded vinyl can be a very formidable soundproofing system.

Closed cell foam is often adhered to the back of an HVAC enclosure as a sound blocker and sound-absorbing barrier. The weather resistance of the closed cell foam makes it perfect for any application where soundproofing is needed outside. This product is also used to stop reflective noise that bounces off a normally hard surface such as the exterior wall of a house. Many times reflective noise is the main reason an air conditioning compressor is so annoying to a next-door neighbor.

America mat closed cell foam can be used in automobiles, trucks and motor homes to quell the sound of a loud engine or onboard generator. Lining the underside of a cars hood with the 1″ closed cell foam can quiet the engine noise from the hood area by deadening the bare hood metal and also by blocking and absorbing the sound of the engine as it tries to escape from the engine compartment. The America Mat can also be used to line the insides of car door panels as well as the trunk and wheel well areas to prevent road noise from entering the passenger cabin.

America mat foam can also be used in the plenum area of a cedar or redwood fence. The foam would be sandwiched in between to sides of slats on the fence and would seal the seams of the slats to block unwanted noise from penetrating through the fence. This product is also very effective when adhered to a barricade wall in a shooting range or a police training facility. America mat is easily cleaned with a pressure sprayer and will dry out much quicker than regular open cell foam.

America Mat has endless possibilities for soundproofing in areas where other products just can’t be used. From Aircraft to large ocean vessels, America Mat closed cell foam is the choice of people in the know. Where Did The Window Boxes Go?

I just happen to love window boxes and miss seeing them in the more modern neighborhoods these days. My neighbors who lived across the street from us had just painted their older rather plain, small house a medium gray with white trim. Clean, but boring I thought. With two large windows on each side of the front door, I had visions of painting the front door red and adding 2 red window boxes beneath those windows. Talk about adding some impact!

Window boxes can take a plain nondescript house and give it the look of a charming country cottage in no time. Window boxes are also particularly wonderful when you are limited for planting space in a small yard. You can fill them with low growing and trailing flowers, vines or even herbs. You may be hard put to find ready-made window boxes at your local garden store these days, but they are still available online.

If you want to make your own window boxes, cedar or redwood would be the wood of choice. If you can’t find some kind of a plastic or metal liner to fit, I would further protect the wood by lining the boxes with plain old tarpaper before adding the planting mix. You can then mount them to the window frames with the proper sized brackets. Your neighborhood hardware store can guide you in the right direction.

Make sure you drill some holes in he bottom of the window boxes for good drainage and water daily during the summer months. Once every few weeks are so, add some fertilizer for container plants, then sit back and enjoy beautiful blooms from both the outside and inside of the house.

Some good flower choices for window boxes would be geraniums, marigolds, trillium, alyssum, and any other low growing flowers that love the sun. For the shady side of the house, try fuchsias or the beautiful non-stop begonias. Some useful herb choices would include chives, rosemary, parsley and thyme. If you like fresh mint, don’t plant any other herb in that particular window box as the mint will take over all other plants.

Origins

Petty Superbird

Cubmaster Don Murphy organized the first pinewood derby, held on May 15, 1953 in Manhattan Beach, California by Pack 280c. Murphy’s son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the full-size Soap Box Derby cars, but were much smaller and easier to build. After Don Murphy’s first race in 1953 the Los Angeles County Department of Recreation copied the pinewood derby with Murphy’s permission.

In the 1980s, the design of the block was changed from a cutout block, consistent with a 1940’s style front-engined Indy 500 car, to a solid block. The tires were also changed from narrow, hard plastic, to wider “slicks”.

Construction

A Cub Scout holds a winning pine car

The Scout is given a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track used by that particular scout pack.

Blocks can be whittled with a hand knife or a band saw or Dremel carving tool for major shaping. Decals can be bought at scout shops or hobby shops. It is also possible to use standard model decals to replicate actual racing cars such as Richard Petty’s 1970 Plymouth Superbird, shown at right. The original style is based on open wheel cars, however, fender or body kits are available, or wheels can simply be placed outboard of the body.

Other than the previous basic design rules, the Cub Scout is able to carve and decorate the car as he chooses. Many Cub Scouts also add weights to the final design to bring the car to the maximum allowable weight; coins, glue-in lead pieces, and melted lead are common ways to add weight. Cars typically vary from unfinished blocks to whimsical objects, to accurate replicas of actual cars. The fastest cars tend to resemble low doorstops, with weight at the rear. Graphite is usually the only lubricant allowed, and it often helps to polish the provided nails.

The idea behind the pinewood derby is for the parent, usually the father, but occasionally the mother or grandparent, to spend time helping the child design, carve, paint, add weights, and tune the final car. However, it is often the case that the parent takes over the construction of the car, an aspect of the event that was lampooned in the 2005 film Down and Derby, and also in a 2009 episode of South Park. The quest for a fast car supports a cottage industry that supplies modified wheels, axles, and blocks as well as videos and instruction books. While a pinewood derby car kit costs around , a set of modified wheels and axles can sell for more than ten times that amount. These aftermarket items are legal under some Pack rules since the parts originally came from an official BSA kit. Complete cars can be purchased on eBay and elsewhere for around 0 to 0. Although these cars violate the spirit of the event, if not the rules, enforcement can be difficult.

Model manufacturer Revell was licensed by the BSA to produce pinewood derby kits with a release in December 2009.

Competition

The track usually has two to six lanes and slopes down to the ground, since the cars are powered by gravity. Tracks may be owned by the pack or rented. The race is run in heats, giving every car the chance to run on each lane. The racers can be grouped with others from the same rank (Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, Bear Cubs, etc.), or can compete against the pack as a whole.

The first, second, and third place winners usually receive ribbons, medals or trophies. Some packs also award on the basis of car design. The first place race winners get to advance to the district level, then each of the district-wide race winners get to race each other from across the entire council.

Other races

Pinewood derby cars ready to race

As the popularity of the pinewood derby grew, other organizations adopted the concept. Pinewood derby is a registered registered trademark of the BSA, so most use different names. Each derby has slightly different rules for making and racing their cars.

Awana has the Awana Grand Prix.

Christian Service Brigade uses the name Shape N Race Derby.

Royal Ambassadors have RA Racers.

Royal Rangers use a different kit with screw axles and dowel rod axle supports.

Scouts Canada has the kub kar rally for Cub Scouts and beaver buggies for Beaver Scouts.

YMCA chule cars use the same kit as the Royal Rangers.

Valve cover racing is an event at some car shows using vehicles made from valve covers.

Car modifications

Stock wheels (left) and modified (one gram) wheels (right)

Car track

The forces propelling a pinewood derby car are gravity and inertia, the opposing forces are friction and air drag. Therefore, car modifications are aimed at maximizing the potential energy in the car design and minimizing the air drag and the friction that occurs when the wheel spins on the axle, contacts the axle head or car body, or contacts the track guide rail. Friction due to air drag is a minor, although not insignificant, factor. The wheel tread can be sanded or lathed and the inner surface of the hub can be coned to minimize the contact area between the hub and body. Polishing the wheel, especially the inner hub, with a plastic polish can also reduce friction. Often one front wheel is raised slightly so that it does not contact the track and add to the rolling resistance. Axles are filed or lathed to remove the burr and crimp marks and polished smooth. More extensive modifications involve tapering the axle head and cutting a notch to minimize the wheel-to-axle contact area. Note that packs can establish additional rules for what, if any, modifications are allowed. In some areas, no changes can be made to the axles or wheels.

A second consideration is the rotational energy stored in the wheels. The pinewood derby car converts gravitational potential energy into translational kinetic energy (speed) plus rotational energy. Heavier wheels have a greater moment of inertia and their spinning takes away energy that would otherwise contribute to the speed of the car. A standard wheel has a mass of 3.6 g, but this can be reduced to as little as 1 g by removing material from the inside of the wheel. A raised wheel can reduce the rotational energy up to one-quarter, but this advantage is less with a bumpy track.

A proper lubricant, typically graphite powder, is essential. Wheel alignment is important both to minimize wheel contact with the axle head and body as well as to limit the contact between the wheels and guide rail as the car travels down the track. The center of mass of a typical car is low and slightly ahead of the rear axle, which helps the car track straight as well as providing a slight advantage due to the additional gravitational potential energy.

Westport House & Irish Pirate Queen Grinne N Mhille

During the 16th century, Grinne N Mhille or Granuaile was a famous Pirate Queen of Connaught. After her death, a report stated that for forty years was the stay of all rebellions in the west. She was chief of the O’Malley Clan and ruled the seas around Mayo. Grinne N Mhille had several castles in the west of Ireland and it was on the foundations of one of these that Westport House was actually built. There is still an area of her original castle in the basement of the House (the Dungeons), which is on view to visitors.

There is a Bronze statue of Grinne N Mhille by the artist Michael Cooper situated on the grounds of Westport House.

The original House was built by Colonel John Browne, a Jacobite, who was at the Siege of Limerick, and his wife Maude Bourke. Maude Bourke was Grinne N Mhille great-great granddaughter. The House then did not have the lake or a dam and the tide rose and fell against the walls.

The East front of the house as it is today was built in 1730 by Colonel John Browne’s grandson, also John – 1st Earl of Altamont, who hired the famous German architect Richard Cassels. It is built with the finest limestone taken from the quarry south of the estate farmyard and was executed by craftsmen. Richard Cassels also designed Carton, Haselwood, Russborough and Leinster House. Westport House was completed by James Wyatt, one of the greatest English architects, who also laid out the town of Westport. On the south facade is the date 1778, inside, many of the ceilings, cornice and fireplaces are examples of his finest works. The Large Dining room is perhaps the finest remaining example of his work. The doors are mahogany brought back from the family estates in Jamaica. There are still a number of original James Wyatt drawings on show, together with some of his son, Benjamin Wyatt, who also did some work in the house.

There are several architecturally stunning rooms on show in Westport House.

Westport House Art & Antiques

Westport House is also unusual in that it is complete with original contents, most of which have a long association with Ireland. Among the pictures are portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds of the 1st Earl of Altamont, of the Rt. Hon. Denis Browne, brother of the 1st Marquess of Sligo and a member of Grattan’s Parliament; by William Beechey, of Howe Peter – the 2nd Marquess of Sligo, who spent four months in an English jail for bribing British seamen in time of war to bring his ship, full of antiquities from Greece, to Westport. Howe Peter was a friend of George IV and the poet Byron.

There is a portrait of Earl Howe – Admiral of the Fleet, father of the 1st Marchioness of Sligo, by John Singleton Copley. Artworks also include a magnificent collection of landscapes painted in the locality by James Arthur O’Connor. Other artists such as Chalon, Barrett, Gibson, Opie, Brooks and Lavery are part of the collection.

There is also a collection of waxwork figures by Gems Display Figures, which are a tribute to the literary, arts and music achievements of the W Ireland. Including William Butler Yeats, Lady Gregory and Turlough Carolan.

Other original items on show in Westport House are a fine collection of old English and Irish silver, which include some 18th-century Irish “potato” or dish rings; Waterford glass; a library with many old Irish books and the Mayo Legion Flag which was brought to Ireland by General Humbert when he invaded the country in 1798, and which has been in Westport House since. Westport House was occupied by General Humbert troops.

Westport House & The Browne Family

The story of Westport House and the Browne family is a microcosm for the wider and, at times, turbulent history of Ireland. Each generation has had to contend with and adapt to the prevailing social, political and religious changes encountered along the way. Despite revolution, invasion, plantation, famine and confiscation, the bond uniting Westport House and its family remains unbroken.

The Browne family came to County Mayo from Sussex in the sixteenth century. Through marriage with the daughters of native Irish landowners and by purchase they built up a small estate near The Neale. As a Catholic family they were fortunate that their lands were situated in Connaught thereby escaping notorious confiscations of Cromwell.

It is with John Browne III (1638-1711) that the connection with Westport House commenced. A successful lawyer, he married Maud Bourke, daughter of Viscount Mayo and great-great granddaughter of the Pirate Queen, Granuaile (Grace O’Malley 1530-1603). John Browne greatly increased his estate in Mayo and Galway including Cathair-na-Mart (the Fort of the Beeves) a ruinous O’Malley fortress on the shores of Clew Bay.

John good fortune was soon swept away as Ireland was plunged into chaos in the Williamite wars. A Catholic, John supported the Jacobite cause and was a Colonel in the Jacobite army. From the iron mines on his lands near Westport, he supplied the army with cannon balls and weapons. The defeat of the Jacobite army at Aughrim and Limerick in 1691 brought financial ruin in the confiscations that followed. At his death in 1711 his estate was reduced to Cathair na Mart and a few hundred acres. The Penal Laws which followed left his grandson, John IV, with little option but to conform to the prevailing religion in the hope of surviving the confiscations and political upheaval.

John gradually revived the family fortune. Young and ambitious he set about extending his estate and transforming the old O’Malley castle into modern day Westport House. He replaced the old village of Cathair-na-Mart with a new town of Westport where he established a thriving linen industry. An excellent farmer, he set about improving the fertility of his lands, which, for the most part, were of poor quality. He became the first Earl of Altamont. In 1752, his son and heir, Peter, 2nd Earl of Altamont, married the heiress, Elizabeth Kelly from Co Galway, whose estates in Jamaica further enhanced the family fortune.

John 3rd Earl of Altamont, continued the innovative farming tradition of his grandfather. He created the lake to the west of Westport House, planted trees employed James Wyatt to decorate the beautiful Gallery and Dining Room. He laid out the principal streets of present town of Westport, and many of the streets in Westport today are named after Browne family members such as Peter Street, James Street, Altamont Street and John’s Row. He also established a theatre at the Octagon and built the town of Louisburgh. In 1787, he married Louisa Catherine, daughter and heiress of the famous English

Earl Howe. During his lifetime the French-inspired 1798 Rebellion occurred. Aided by the arbitrarily actions of Denis Browne, his younger brother, against the Irish insurgents (which earned him the reputation of `black sheep’ of the family) the Rebellion was crushed. John became Marquess of Sligo after the Act of Union in 1800. He seldom attended parliament in London being more content at home in Westport.

His only son Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquess of Sligo, inherited in 1809 at the age of twenty-one. Extravagant and generous, his early life subscribed to the popular image of a ‘regency buck’. Friend of Byron, de Quincy and the Prince Regent, he travelled extensively throughout Europe. He excavated at Mycenae and discovered the 3,000 year old columns of the Treasury of Atreus. To bring them back to Westport, he took some seamen from a British warship, and was subsequently sentenced to four months in Newgate Prison. He married Hester, the Earl of Clanrickard’s daughter, by whom he had fourteen children, and settled down to life in Westport. He added the north and south wings, the library, and commissioned much furniture, china, silver and paintings for the House. He bred many famous race horses both at Westport and at the Curragh. One of his horses, Waxy, won the Derby. He owned the last two of the breed of Irish wolfhound. In 1834, he was appointed Governor General of Jamaica with the difficult task of overseeing the ‘apprenticeship system’, in a period prior to the full emancipation of the slaves. He met with great opposition from plantation owners and other vested interests. He was first to emancipate the slaves on the family’s Jamaican plantations. The first ‘free village’ in the world, Sligoville, was subsequently named in his honour. A liberal, he was one of the few Irish peers to vote for Catholic Emancipation. He died in 1845 as the clouds of the Great Famine descended over Mayo.

His son, George, the 3rd Marquess, inherited a terrible legacy. The West of Ireland was worst affected by the famine. Westport House was closed and with no rents forthcoming, George borrowed where he could, spending 50,000 of his own money to alleviate the suffering of the tenants. He imported cargoes of meal to Westport Quay and subvented the local workhouse, then the only shelter available to the destitute. He wrote tirelessly to the British Government, demanding that they do more to help the famine victims. He wrote and had published a pamphlet outlining many pioneering reforms of the economic conditions that had led to the famine. In 1854 on being offered the Order of St Patrick, an honour once held by his father and grandfather, disillusioned by England’s Irish policy (a recurring sentiment at Westport House!) the 3rd Marquess wrote ‘I have no desire for the honour.’

John succeeded his brother as 4th Marquess. He had to contend with the huge changes that occurred in the ownership of land in Ireland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Above all he was a ‘professional’ farmer, whose main contribution was to transform a reduced and almost bankrupt estate into a profitable one, solely from agriculture. This work was continued by the 6th Marquess who added a sawmill, a salmon hatchery and planted extensively. He also modernised the interior of the House and created the Italianate terrace to the west.

The compulsory acquisition of the main entrance to the House for local public housing occurred in the time of the 8th Marquess, which altered the historic relationship that had existed between the House and town of Westport.

In 1960, the 10th Marquess, Denis Edward, his wife Jose and son Jeremy opened Westport House and the grounds to the visiting public. It was a pioneering venture in a place and at a time that was remote and depressed. Over the succeeding decades the 11th Marquess and his family have developed the estate into a major tourist attraction. From 5,000 visitors in the first year, Westport House has now welcomed over 4 million visitors.

Today, the Browne family continue the long links that bind Westport House to its Family. By hard work and dedication, they aim to ensure that Westport House will survive and continue to contribute to the economic development of the West of Ireland.
