Next time you visit Yosemite Park, plan ahead to take advantage of the summer concerts held in Groveland, just a short drive from the park.

If there’s a getaway that seems to hit all the buttons, this one is it. Outdoor concerts are fun anytime, but combine that with a unique lodging experience and unforgettable scenery and you have one of those getaways that people will travel some distance to experience.

The Groveland Hotel is located in the small town of Groveland, California, and offers something they call the Yosemite Courtyard Theatre in which they take their outdoor patio and convert it to a concert venue a half-dozen or more times each summer. Over the past few years the concerts have been so successful that the hotel now has a big-time venue seating chart on its website where you can choose exactly which of the 100 available seats you will occupy.

Yes, it’s an intimate setting – but that makes it even better.

The artists tend to be tribute bands – groups that copy the appearance and sound of famous bands like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and, of course, Elvis. Tickets are reasonably priced, ranging from to a seat.

According to Front Desk Manager and Event Coordinator Jim Novak, concert-goers are about evenly divided between visitors and local residents. Lodging packages are available if you’re staying at the Groveland Hotel, which has 17 uniquely decorated rooms. The historic inn features Victorian furniture, plush featherbeds, private baths, a full-service saloon and free wifi/internet access for all rooms. This is a bed-and-breakfast inn so, included in your stay, will be a breakfast that includes a variety of fresh-baked goods, egg dishes, cereals, yogurt, coffee, tea, juices and fruits.

The Groveland Inn also has received excellent reviews for the “California-fresh cuisine” served in its restaurant, which has also been recognized by Wine Spectator Magazine for its extensive wine list. The menu includes sales, fish, pasta and steaks all prepared with seasonal ingredients.

The tiny town of Groveland is on the most direct, scenic route to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay area – Highway 120. Drive another 26 miles and you come to the north entrance of Yosemite National Park.

Another great accommodation in Groveland is the Hotel Charlotte, also a historic property that was purchased a few years ago by Lynn Upthagrove and her husband, Victor. Lynn says they did extensive renovations and that most everything in the hotel was replaced. The result is a charming Old West kind of hotel layout that is more bed-and-breakfast than it is hotel. We enjoyed a stay at the hotel, where the accommodations were small, but quite comfortable.

The breakfast that is included with the room at Hotel Charlotte features pancakes and eggs and several other items such as cereals and pastries. At night, the breakfast area becomes a gourmet restaurant where Victor cooks up a variety of dishes he has mastered while working with various specialty chefs and by growing up in a restaurateur family.

The town of Groveland is one of several former Gold Rush towns in this part of the state and it still has that Western Main Street feel to it. Across the street from Hotel Charlotte is the Iron Door Saloon, where it feels like a bar out of your favorite Western – and where they serve surprisingly good food. Up the street a piece is the old Town Jail that has been lovingly restored just for the tourists to come and view what Frontier Justice was really like.

On our trip to Groveland, we found it to be a quick and scenic climb from there into Yosemite National Park. The Sequoia forests and scenery didn’t just start at the entrance to the park – these special vistas were evident well before we approached the park boundaries and visible in every direction.

It’s not far from the Highway 120 entrance to the Yosemite Valley where we soon were enjoying grand views of the rock walls that have made Yosemite so famous. It’s not hard to see why Yosemite is considered to be the “Crown Jewel” of the National Park System – the towering granite cliffs are the result of earthquakes, glaciers and other forces that have been at work here for millions of years. In all, the park encompasses about 1,170 square miles of pristine forests, waterfalls, and alpine lakes, but visitors are most awe-struck by these walls of granite that dwarf their surroundings.

We first stopped by Bridal Veil Falls, a popular park attraction and a spectacular sight that you can enjoy after a short walk from the parking lot. The runoff during the fall season undoubtedly is less than in the springtime, but even the relative trickle of water cascading down the sheer rock cliff was impressive. Visitors couldn’t help but be tempted by the stair-step rocks leading to a closer view of the falls – even though a sign offers a stern warning that “fatalities have occurred” climbing on these sometimes slippery rocks.

Further down the road, there it was – El Capitan – perhaps the most famous of the park landmarks, and a stunner the first time you view it up close. Even during our off-season visit, dozens of cars were parked alongside of the road while their occupants stood by staring upward at this 4,000-foot rock wall. It was difficult to imagine people actually climbing El Capitan, but they do. As they say, each to his own.

And so it goes when you’re visiting Yosemite – a different spectacular sight every few minutes as you drive through stands of Sequoia or Pine trees, stopping at trailheads to walk even further into the wilderness where you cross babbling brooks and enjoy numerous sightings of wildlife such as the Western Gray Squirrels, Golden Eagles or Peregrine Falcons. Combine that with a historic inn and a fun outdoor concert and you have the makings for a memorable California getaway.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Yosemite National Park is in Northern California, about 90 miles east of Fresno and is accessible from Highway 99 by taking Highway 120, Highway 140 or Highway 41. You’ll find Groveland on Highway 120, about 26 miles west of the north entrance to Yosemite National Park.

WHAT: Yosemite National Park is considered the “Crown Jewel” of the National Park System and is one of California’s most popular tourist attractions. The variety of scenery and numerous natural attractions can be explored for days, even weeks. Add to that an outdoor concert and you have a getaway experience that is quite unique.

WHEN: Year-round, although some lodgings are closed in winter, and roads can be treacherous. If you’re bothered by crowds, consider visiting in fall and spring when there are fewer visitors, yet natural beauty abounds. The Groveland concerts, however, are only offered during the summer season.

WHY: Yosemite National Park offers a wide variety of scenic and natural attractions for all ages. The concerts at the Groveland Hotel are fun, and the town itself is a charming place to stay that is a little bit away from the crowds of Yosemite.

HOW: For more information on the concerts at the Groveland Hotel, phone 1-800-273-3314 or visit www.groveland.com.

Have we misplaced our youngsters in a hypnotic video game trance? Have they develop into “drones” to the “video age”?

Generally it might seem that way as many youngsters spend hour upon hour in front of a video screen, pressing buttons or jockeying around a joystick. But it is as a lot as the mother and father of youngsters to say enough, let’s discover some academic alternatives. However, it wasn’t that way back once we have been kids….we had actual toys….classic toys.

Let’s step into a time tunnel of kinds and recall a few of the fascinating toys that we had the pleasure of taking half in with:

Tinker Toys

Ahh..Tinker Toys..rods, sticks, spools, spokes..simple, however a true traditional toy invented in 1914 by Charles Pajeau, who was a stonemason by trade from Evanston, Illinois. He was impressed by kids enjoying with pencils, sticks and empty spools of thread to create his new toy. He noticed them improvising and utilizing their imaginations and questioned if improve upon what they were doing. He designed his first set of Tinker Toys in his garage and displayed them in 1914 on the American Toy Fair.

Alas, his Tinker Toys drew no interest. So he tried again, this time at Christmas time, but with a new advertising and marketing plan. Pajeau hired a quantity of midgets and had them dress in elf costumes. He then had them “play” with the Tinker Toys” in a retailer display window in a Chicago division retailer and with this publicity a model new toy was born. After a 12 months or so, over a million sets of Tinker Toys had been bought!

Lincoln Logs

Notched redwood logs that may very properly be used to assemble log cabins, Lincoln Logs had been the invention of John Lloyd Wright, son of well-known architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The inter locking logs, invented in 1916, were customary after the inspiration of Tokyo’s earthquake-proof Imperial Lodge, which the youthful Wright witnessed being constructed.

Through the World War I era, it was in vogue to encourage American patriotism and for American’s to purchase American made merchandise, thus the brand new toy was named after one of our most revered presidents, Abraham Lincoln.

The original units offered very properly and became much more common with the introduction of television to the United States. Actually, Lincoln Logs were among the first toys to be advertised and promoted on television. Capitalizing on the recognition of westerns in early television, Lincoln Logs had been profitable promoted on 1953’s Pioneer Playhouse.

Today, Lincoln Logs are nonetheless obtainable and have stood the test of time. As a matter of truth, as late as 1975, Lincoln Logs were still selling at a price of one million units per year. A sophisticated toy, it challenges kids to make use of their creativeness and enhance hand-eye coordination skills.

Is it just the working class who are frustrated by society, who feel inferior to the middle class and feel they must reject society and create their own set of rules, values and norms. However is it also the middle class boys who feel isolated by their…

There is a better way for guests to earn rewards and free nights than trying to earn points at hotel chains. Make a few phone calls and here are the kinds of numbers you can expect.

10 Times Better than Marriott Rewards

With a phone call to Marriott Rewards we set up a typical situation for earning a free night. Take a dollar209 room at Marriott Suites. This would earn traveler 627 points in their reward program. Of the seven levels to earn a free night in the Marriott program, the lowest requires 7,500 points. With the sample price of dollar209 a night, it would require a little more than 11.9 nights at a total price of dollar2,500 to compile enough points to earn your free stay.

Now well check how travelers can earn a free stay at B,Bs nationwide, in addition to a few other B,B related values. Bed and breakfasts are hard to beat when it comes to unique lodging, hospitality and what you can get for your hard earned dollar. If you are interested in making your money work better for you, take into consideration a couple of items.

Right now you can get a free night at any one of 1,560 bed and breakfast inns when you purchase the first night at the regular rate. Why do the do this Simple. B,Bs and country inns are smaller than your average hotel and they have smaller advertising spends. By offer a free night during certain times of the year, they can incent guests and earn additional exposure for their property.
The site that runs this free night program, travelers can save dollar140 on an average two night stay. Think about the numbers above that we quoted from Marriott Rewards. How much more can you stretch your travel dollar than using it to spend 11.9 nights in order to get that free night.

The Buy One Night Get One Night Free reward gives you an immediate free night for only one nights expense. The savings can be up to dollar650 depending on the B,B you choosing.

You can save even more when you take into consideration your meal expense. The bed and breakfast, after all, comes with breakfast. But many inns also take it a step further an offer various free business services and such items as free drinks or snacks and not with a mini bar price.

Get More For Your Dollar and More From Your Travel Experience With a Bed and Breakfast.
Understanding that you can stretch your dollar further at a bed and breakfast, lets look at a California bed and breakfast, this Craftsman style B,B in the heart of Monterey Peninsula the Inn at Seventeen Mile Drive.

Choose from rooms with views of the sea or garden in the main house of this three building bed and breakfast. Or, enjoy the oak and redwoods in the chalet and cottage rooms. Unwind in the spa beneath the towering trees or the gardens whose guests also include the occasional deer and monarch butterfly. Maybe sip some champagne near the fountains and koi ponds. With the Buy One Night Get One Night Free program, guests will save anywhere from dollar145 to dollar290 at this lovely property.

A stellar experience to go with a great savings. So, take a look at options like that California bed and breakfast and the more than 1,500 other inns in the free night program the next time you are looking to earn rewards.

Wood furniture can give calm down in the midst of rough surroundings and can help us enjoy the natural outdoors. Adirondack style furniture is extremely well known and famous as patio furniture. Adirondack chairs are ideal for house porches, cabins or hunting lodges.

This patio furniture chair have a exclusive style with amazing curved backrest, wide armrests, slatted seats and angled supports that come together to offer a rugged plus reclined look. The legs of the Adirondack chairs are slight at the bottom and wide at the top. Adirondack chairs really give comfort and style.

This patio furniture chair also very durable. A large variety of chairs are now being manufactured in a variety of sizes and materials based on these basic slatted and large designs. Cedar, pine and redwood are the chosen wood for Adirondack f chairs. Red cedar is chosen because of its frothiness and as it resists rot well though white cedar is as well a fine touch.

The wood is usually three-quarters to one inch in width based on how sturdy the patio furniture chair is. The chair is usually held collectively with drywall screws. The screw openings are sealed with cedar plugs using glue. Carriage bolts can be used to fix the slanted legs to the vertical legs and for the armrests.

Adirondack chairs available in numerous designs and choices and are easily available in lots of furniture stores. Once you make a decision on your necessities for the chairs or the complete set of furniture, you can purchase this excellent set of furniture that can serve you for years to come depending on your finances and taste.

It is continually wise to remember the importance of the investment. Well built furniture will likely last for years while it is an unsure conclusion for inexpensively made furniture. These days Adirondack chairs are also available at online stores. You can browse them, look at the dissimilar sizes, models and options available and make decisions from the comfort of your residence.

This patio furniture chair are an investment for life as they are very strong and can be used for a long time. Thus while making your purchase decision, you can decide on investing a little bit more and pay money for a satisfying piece of furniture rather than go in for something that is less pricey, but might not keep happy you completely.

All wooden climbing frame types come with guarantees. There are many available to choose from. Such as some with low levels, some with platforms, and some with towers. Some are indicative of type like, Fort, Barn, Villa, Mansion, Chalet, and Barrack. Also there are the Hut, Club, Cottage, Cubby, Cabin, and lodge.

These wooden frames can be expanded on to complete the desired look for the unique outdoor play set for your children. Start your kids on one by the time they are three years of age. You can add to the climbing frame to accommodate their getting bigger, and growing older. Keep in mind the amount of children, and body weight for safe play.

Styles include the Forest Range with a smaller yard in mind. It is made out of kiln dried Scandinavian redwood, FSC certified. The wood is covered by a five year guarantee. The Forest Ranger has a platform, and den. Safety features assure that the wood has been smoothed and rounded with no protruding nuts.

Watch as your children get physically fit as they play for hours climbing up and down, swinging and sliding. Sandpits can even be created beneath lower levels for added fun. The wood is resistant to moisture, rot and rust. It was made to last in keeping up with the versatility of children. The wood ages naturally and stays strong.

The Kingswood low tower can grow with your children from three years old to adolescence. To enhance the size of the Kingswood, remove the roof add the top deck and put the roof back on again. This frame is big, made out of kiln dried Scandinavian pine, and is FSC certified.

The top deck has an enclosed platform with removable sides for open play. Swings and slides can be added for a fully rounded gym. Covered by a lifetime guarantee against rot and rust, this climbing frame will provide years of fun. It also has a ladder on the inside to reach the top deck tower, making it easier for smaller children.

Some are made specifically to fit in a small yard, while others are made to fit in standard to large yards. Whatever your yard size you will find a wooden climbing frame to your liking and that fits your families needs. Some are so big that parents can join in on the fun too!

The adding on of additional equipment can turn your climbing frame into a fortress. Hours of fun will be spent on climbing and sliding, while building muscle tone and stretching limbs. Outdoor play time will be an experience not soon forgotten as your children play and grow.

To make the most of a fun adventure, a wooden climbing frame is indeed in order. It can make all the difference in your children’s physical growth, and stamina. They will always remember times spent climbing away the hours, and playing with siblings and friends.

In case you do not possess a picnic table for your garden or cabin you need to have one! Picnic tables aren’t just for meals, but a area to collect outside on the patio or garden. A area for persons to sit and visit, eat a meal, play a game and so forth. If you really don’t have one, why not find out how to build a picnic table yourself? It can be a very straightforward venture that you’ll be able to complete inside a weekend and use for many years to come.

Building a picnic table is usually a enjoyable household venture or possibly a good gift for a new homeowner.

How large really should a picnic table be?

“Standard” dimension picnic tables that you just buy are 60 inches in length or 5 feet. That presents ample room for 2 individuals to a side to sit easily. The beauty of creating your own personal picnic table is the fact that you’ll be able to make it any size you desire! Do you entertain a good deal and want a large table? Is your picnic location a gathering area at the same time as a spot for meals? Do you choose 2 small tables or 1 large one?

Pattern

The normal picnic table pattern would be the A-frame with connected benches. It can be also essentially the most straightforward to make. You are developing the picnic table on your own so you can make a decision what you choose. Personally, I hate attached benches. I find they ensure it is challenging to get up and down from your table as they should be at a distance that makes eating comfortable. I really feel like a contortionist and prefer benches separate from your stand. If they may be separate then they can also be moved and utilised somewhere else if you desire.

What shape do you Want?

You are not confined to a rectangle. You’ll find also plans for hexagonal tables, that are good to fit in smaller places. It can be all up to you. Materials Redwood would be the classic picnic table building material, but doesn’t have to be your only alternative. Pressure treated 2×4’s are yet another popular building material for picnic tables. Stop by your lumber store to find out what other products are readily available, you are only confined by availability and durability. You should use products that can stand up to the elements year after year.

You’ll be able to see that planning how to build a picnic table has many variations to suit your individual demands, that is one of the good reasons that making it by yourself is often a good selection.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Petaluma California: Experiencing the charm of an old city

Petaluma is a place where dramatic coasts, redwoods, and wineries all come together. As one of the oldest cities in California, this city in the Sonoma County has a charm and is a perfect place for a getaway. This city with 13.9 square miles is home to proud 54,548 residents. The name Petaluma came from the name of the Coast Mwok village located at the east of the Petaluma River.

Petaluma once became known for its chicken processing and grain milling thus they were called the Egg Capital of the World. However, this did not continue and its nickname was replaced and became Telecom Valley. From the change in the nickname, it is evident that the industries that are now dominating the city are the telecom companies. In fact, recently, the city has been noted again because of the creation of Twit.tv that took place in one of the cottages in this city. Despite this, there are still a number of farms that produce dairy products, vegetables, berries and olive groves. The city makes sure that they maintain and protect their agriculture  The city has also become popular as shooting sites for various movies because of the existence of historic iron-front building, Eastlake houses and old Victorian, Queen Anne homes that gives off a different atmosphere; thus the progress of its commercial district.

Apart from the old houses and chicken processing, being in the Wine County, Petaluma is a perfect place to explore wineries. Having about a hundred of them, one can expect a different and unique experience when exploring these places. Also, parts of the attractions in this city are the art and antique galleries and the art centers. There are even festivals and shows displaying the local artworks. The recreational activities are also a must-try. From the typical hiking, bicycling, fishing and sports like golf and tennis, the tourists and residents can enjoy equestrian outings, auto racing and even aerial adventure. One may also enjoy boating that is surely out of the ordinary since it is included in the Top Ten Bay Area Leisure Boating Destinations in the country. In addition to this, one can expect a different shopping experience. From the typical shops in large-scale malls, one can enjoy strolling down the street packed with antique shops, book shops and specialty stores.

Thus, one cannot say that this is just another city in the Wine County as it proves to be much more than that.

Tree Cavity Care or “What’s that hole in my tree trunk?”

A tree cavity is a hole in a trunk or branch of a tree. A cavity is caused by damage to the bark or woody tissue of the tree. The wound can result from a pruning cut, mechanical injury caused by machinery, storm damage, dead limbs that decay into the trunk, or any injury that damages the tree. When a tree loses the bark it opens up the tree to infection or decay similar to a wound to our skin or damage to the enamel on our teeth.

Patagonia, The awe inspiring beauty of the Lake District a mythical landscape of clear blue lakes, dramatic peaks, and green forests – this unspoilt land is the perfect place to start off the Honeymoon in style. This is a place to experience natural beauty in its purest form. We can help organize trips into this undeveloped wilderness on horseback, 4×4, hiking and fishing in these splendid surrounds.

You stay in a luxurious lodge set in the expansive and beautiful grounds that cover over 20,000 hectares and surrounded by some of the lake districts’ most gorgeous countryside. The activities are plentiful from riding to sailing from fishing to golf and can be tailor-made exactly to your requirements, everything done with a personal and professional touch.

Then it’s off to the Glacier region of Patagonia staying in a historical lodge exclusively positioned on the shores of lake Viedma, with panoramic views of the lake, Mount Fitz Roy and the Andes Mountains. With comfortable rooms and excellent food it is an oasis among the glaciers, mountains and forests of the majestic natural landscape that surrounds it including a wood of Californian Redwood trees brought 100 years ago by its founder, the Finnish explorer Alfred Ranström.

This is a place to experience the raw natural beauty of nature in its purest form. Take trips into this unspoilt wilderness on horseback or on foot – for example trekking through valleys and up rivers until after crossing a lush wood of lengas trees you discover the brilliant Laguna Azul. Boat trips across the lake amongst the many gleaming icebergs as well as hiking across the Moreno glacier itself are unforgettable experiences

After the glaciers there is still more of Patagonia to see are few places in the world that can compare with Peninsula Valdes; a unique wildlife sanctuary that is the ideal place for close-up watching of whales, penguins, dark dolphins, elephant seals, sea lions, birds and Patagonian land-based species such as lesser rhea, mara (Patagonian hare), foxes, skunks or flocks of guanacos. A virtual island the peninsula has an other-worldly, almost desolate beauty. The long beaches, cliffs and salt flats are almost solely inhabited by the unique wildlife, enabling an experience that makes you feel you have travelled back in time to the age of Darwin.

You stay in a special estancia of just 8 rooms that is located in the heart of the national park with several miles of private coastline making this the best place to experience the true nature of this wilderness. You take excursions, walking tours and boat trips with our excellent guides to explore and sea the wildlife. With some luck you may even see the striking spectacle of the killer whale beaching itself to feed on the sea-lions.

Round off this fabulous Honeymoon with a few cocktails and a spot of fine dining back in civilisation in the happening streets of Buenos Aires with its Parisian style avenues, grand squares and elegant cafés it still has a distinctively South American feel, with laid back and friendly locals.

This city is a real joy to explore with well preserved historic districts coupled with an excellent nightlife and a relaxed café culture. You will have our extensively researched recommendations on the best restaurants bars and nightclubs.
You stay in a boutique designer hotel in the chic tree-lined streets of the Palermo Viejo district where all the best bars, restaurants and shopping are to be found. Owned by a famous  interior  designer, this is a beautifully hotel, with many antique pieces and little design touches.

Our experienced guide Ana will join you for a custom-made tour of the city based on your requirements, making sure that everything is done at your pace. She is great fun to be with and has access to many locations off the tourist trail.

Sequoia National Park is known for its tall trees, but visitors will be surprised to find one of the best caves they will ever want to explore.

Oh the giant Sequoia trees are impressive, all right. Who would not marvel at trees that weigh 2.7 million pounds, that are more than 2,000 years old and have branches seven feet in diameter?

More about those later, but along the way to see the trees we stopped in at the Foothills Visitor Center just after we entered Sequoia National Park. There was a line at the counter so we figured something was worth waiting for, so we nudged a little closer to see just what all the fuss was about. The visitors in line were signing up for the Crystal Cave, a guided tour that cost for each adult, less for kids, and that was still another several miles’ drive into the park. OK, we told the ticket-seller, we’re game.

Next came a long, windy drive — first up into the park, and then down several miles into a canyon to a parking area. From there, we still had a half-mile walk down a steep trail until it seemed we were almost down to the rushing river below. And then there it was: the entrance to Crystal Cave, mother of all Sequoia caves, or at least the one the public is most invited to explore.

Now this is not just any cave. The entrance is maybe just a little smaller than a railroad tunnel and no one is allowed in without a park escort. The guide will take groups of 70 persons or fewer into the cave and through the maze of many adjacent caves and chambers until, quite honestly, we probably never could have found our own way out. I guess this is why, when a little boy had to go to the bathroom, he was escorted back to the entrance by a second tour guide.

Aside from the spookiness that naturally comes from burrowing so far into the earth and its dark inner chambers, the real pay-off on this tour is the natural beauty. All along the way, from “room” to room, we saw gorgeous stalactites and “curtains,” as well as ornate marble and all kinds of crystal formations that made this look like some sort of Hollywood movie set. Fortunately, there are paved, lighted pathways that we followed – our guide never far away – and the rooms had just enough illumination to showcase the formations and their brilliance.

On this hot summer day, the 48-degree temperature of the caves was refreshing. Our 45-minute tour was fascinating every step of the way, and climaxed when our tour guide turned off the lights to show us what total darkness was all about: nothing but black and not a thing visible, even an inch in front of your face. Our guide told us there have been times when the power generator has failed so, at this point, we were just about ready to return to the entrance. While many of the rooms are huge, this tour definitely is not for the claustrophobic.

After the tour it was a fairly steep hike back up to parking lot (something to keep in mind if you’re bringing along Great Grandpa or anyone physically not able to climb the grade). But what an experience – well worth the price of admission and clearly the highlight of our visit to the park.

Sequoia is the second oldest park in the national park system – only Yellowstone predates it. Most people come to see the Sequoia trees, which appear in several groves scattered throughout the park. The trees grow to a height in excess of 300 feet, second in height only to the Redwood trees of Northern California, but considerably larger in girth.

With a little research you learn that the Sequoia tree gets so large because it grows throughout its life and it’s virtually impervious to disease. They only topple because of natural disasters, which explains how it’s possible to have a tree like the General Sherman tree – a park highlight and said to be the oldest living thing in the world. The General Sherman tree is 36 feet in diameter at its base and you could put a 15-story building under its first branch.

The Sequoias are only at certain elevations in the park – generally between 5,000 and 7,000 feet. There are 75 groves in the park with most of the pictures taken in the “Giant Forest” at about 6,500 feet. The world’s oldest trees are found here and, believe it or not, there are almost 11,000 trees in five square miles.

We noticed on our swing through the park that there are numerous walks and hikes through the trees – a really spectacular opportunity to get up close and personal with these giant treasures. In addition to the Sequoias, there are Ponderosa pine, sugar pine, red fir and foxtail pine, all growing to greater than normal size because of the area’s climate. If you like the Great Outdoors, there is no better place to marvel at Nature’s beauty.

There are also numerous places to stop and enjoy the views from the park. The roads through Sequoia take you high into the Sierra Nevada range and, on a clear day, the views of nearby mountains, or even down into the San Joaquin Valley, are spectacular. The view from Moro Rock is said to be one of the best.

If you want to make a weekend of it, there are several places in the park, and at the edge of the park where you can spend the evening. There are eight lodging facilities in Sequoia and Kings Canyon parks, as well as several more in the nearby areas of Three Rivers and Lemon Cove.

Several campgrounds in the park offer spaces for RV camping, although some are more primitive and allow only tents. If you’re bringing an RV, travel on the park roadways can be a little harrowing at times because roads are steep and narrow in some spots. Leaving Sequoia Park, there is a long downgrade and you’ll want to be sure to downshift rather than ride your brakes – the locals told us that vehicles of all sizes come down out of the park with brakes smoking due to overuse.

But whether it’s trees or caves you’re after, the long, windy road to Sequoia National Park is worth it. After all, some of these trees have been waiting for you since before the time of Christ.
AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Sequoia National Park is located in the central Sierra Nevada mountain range. One of the best ways to reach the park is by way of Highway 198, which heads east from Visalia. Highway 198 turns into the Generals Highway, the primary road through the park. The north entrance can be reached from Fresno by taking Highway 180 east.

WHAT: Sequoia National Park is famous for some of the largest trees in the world and some of the highest mountains in the U.S. The park also contains more than 100 marble solution caves, including the Crystal Cave, which is shown to visitors in tour groups of 70 people or fewer.

WHEN: Summer is the best time to avoid hazardous driving, as there can be snow in the park up until June. The Crystal Cave tours are offered from May 8 through November 14, weather permitting. No buses, trailers or vehicles over 22 feet long are permitted on the Crystal Cave road, and you’ll need to allow 90 minutes from the time you purchase your tickets to get to the cave site.

WHY: Sequoia National Park is one of California’s natural treasures.

HOW: For more information on Sequoia National Park, phone (559) 565-3341. For several lodging options, call 866-875-8456. One lodging choice that has been recommended to us is the Plantation Bed and Breakfast Inn in Lemon Cove. This inn has a Gone with the Wind theme, with various rooms named after characters in the film and decorations to match. It’s located a short drive from the park’s southern entrance. Phone 800-240-1466.
