We dont want it be more than 4 hours drive from San Francisco. We like walking, good food, beautiful scenery. Does anyone have any personal recommendations?

Mt. Tamalpais is about 20 mile drive from the city, you can ride and hike up it and it has an aerial view of the entire bay area. Check out the link!

one week is a good amount of time to see the best of the bay area and northern california. enjoy the main tourist spots in san francisco itself because you and your family will love the beauty of the city – check out the views from twin peaks and coit tower, of course see the golden gate bridge by the marina and the bay bridge by the embarcadero. each district has its own character and personality – and the food is great! but aim for the smaller, "mom & pop holes-in-the-wall" because they’re always the best restaurants. napa valley is also very beautiful with great scenery – the wine train is definitely a fun experience. also you can take the ferry to sausalito which is a nice city to enjoy a relaxing family lunch and walk along the shore – if you’re lucky you might be there during their summer art fair. i just got back from yosemite which was about a 3 hour drive from san francisco. your family would probably love this destination the most if you enjoy gorgeous scenery and great long walks in nature. stay at the ahwanee and BRING YOUR CAMERA! i hope this helps a bit with some of your plans.

Healdsburg is a cute town in the middle of Sonoma wine country with great restaurants. The Hotel Healdsburg is lovely, if pricey. I’ve heard good things about Madrona Manor, but it’s outside of town. Point Reyes National Seashore makes a nice daytrip, but might be a bit foggy that time of year.

Redwood National and State Parks, in northern Humboldt County, did not have any cloruses. Humboldt Redwoods State Parks have several : Grizzly Creek, Benbow lake, Richardson Grove and a few more.
Stay at the Awhanee hotel in Yosemite, there is ice skating, beautiful scenery, snow, it’s great if you go while its snowing just make sure you have 4wd or chains. Awhanee is pricey but nice and warming. There are houses you can rent, etc it’s beautiful and only about 4 hours from San Fran I’m estimating.
