I have a question concerning drug testing.?
I recently was given a drug test by my employer. I tested positive for Cocaine. I was given the drug test on the day I returned from a 9 day long vacation. I traveled all over northern California and was offered some Cocaine. I work at a Walmart Distribution Center in Alabama. The company has a random drug testing policy. I do not understand how a company could test for drugs after a person is returning from vacation. I was on my own free time. I was fired from my job for testing positive. I do not see why I should be fired for drug use on vacation. I rarely do drugs. At the most I might smoke pot or the occasional line of coke 3 or 4 times a year.

Yeah, it sucks but you can’t help it. Employers don’t really have a choice but to fire you if you test positive. Luckily, I think they can’t say this when referring you to another job so just find a different one and you won’t have to worry about what the wal-mart job will say. Good luck!

Here’s a thought. Don’t do illegal drugs. Guaranteed pass.

That sucks but it doesn’t matter. You are an employee and subject to a drug test at ANYTIME. By the way, it is common of employers who require drug testing to ask for samples after vacation. Sorry. 🙁
Walmart sucks anyway!

You were on your own time, but you still work for them.
That sucks! It’s going to be hard to find a job!
You can go work at Honda in Lincoln! They keep calling me back!

I dont see a question here.. But, ya, corporate america is a bit "controlling" when they want to be. After all it is their right to fire people. And its the insurances companies right not to deal with a client (Walmart) if they dont enforce its policies (no drug users, not even occasional). Besides, advertising that your company is completely drug free is a selling point. Not everyone agrees that occasional drug use is acceptable. (think of it like if you were hiring a baby sitter. Take two different baby sitters that are the exact same except one does the occasional cocaine… Most everyone would pick the clean one)
It sucks, oh well…
(i dont personally have a problem with it.. its just how it is… like people are saying above)

If those are the rules in your contract of employment, they are perfectly entitled to fire you.
I’m a recovered alcoholic who spent time inn rehab with other addicts (cocaine, heroin etc.) so I’m the last person to judge, bur such companies are entitled to lay down the rules they think fit.
I would check your contact though just to make sure, because in the UK it’s against the law to sack someone who is an alcoholic for instance.
