Humboldt squid surfacing to feed during the day?
Whilst diving of the coast off of a mexican coastal island over several years I have expierienced a seriously terrifyining shoal of feeding squid whom are typicaly night feeders arriving on to and above reefs with the presence of upwelling cold water currents but without a visible presence of krill

Don’t mess with Humboldt Squid…they can be very aggressive and have killed somebody before, and i am not lying I would avoid those squid at all costs unless u are in a chain mail shark suit
Sounds like you came upon a school of them. In the absence of krill or small fish, they may have been cannibalizing injured members. VERY aggressive and dangerous when feeding.
Before getting far, far away very quickly, did you happen to notice any color changing patterns on them? Supposedly they use these to communicate within their group and earned the name "rojos diablos" or red devils from their flashing red and white while struggling with Mexican fishermen.
