If I remember correctly, and it has been years since I lived there, it was about a four hour drive north…

I’ve seen the most amazing redwoods at the Big Basin park in the Santa Cruz mountains. It’s a bit of a drive about 1h 30m, but very much worth it.
Shortly before Big Basin you will drive through a town called Boulder Creek, if you get the chance and enjoy Italian food check out a restaurant called Scopazzi’s for either lunch or dinner, very good food.
if you plan on staying the night in the Santa Cruz mountains, I would recommend the Brookedale Lodge. It’s a nice play to stay, reasonable and they have live bands. You can relax and enjoy a drink next to the fireplace there.

The range of the coast redwood is from Santa Cruz County south of SF to the Oregon border.
Muir Woods is 10 mi. north of SF. North of SF is considered the "Redwood Empire". There are numerous state parks in that region with redwoods.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park are about 250 and 350 mi. north of SF, respectively.

Just across the Golden Gate Bridge, take State Route 1 to Muir Woods National Monument in the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, and you can see first growth redwoods, hundreds of feet tall! It’s about 10 miles from the City.
Redwood National Park is about 200 miles north of the bridge. There are second growth redwoods throughout the Coast Ranges in No. Cal.
Just a few miles…
Muir Woods National Park has a great redwood grove and it’s just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Avenue of the Giants National Redwood parks are pretty far north. They are above Eureka, about a 6 hour drive. There are two parks south of SF, Big Basin and Henry Cowell are state redwood parks just outside of Santa Cruz. Both are closer to two hours from SF, Big Basin off of hwy 9, and Henry Cowell off of hwy 17.
