Can anyone tell me what Humboldt county is like?
My family is probably going to move there next spring and although I’ve been to Chico when I younger, it’s been years since I’ve lived in California. I hear mixed things about the area. What are the elementary schools like? Is there a lot crime? Are housing costs high? Are there decent job opportunities? All answers would help, but I’d really like to hear from people who moved there and hadn’t lived there before if possible.

Flower’s comments are clueless! If Humboldt County is politically conservative then Barak Obama is a republican. Humboldt conservative! LOL!!!
I don’t know why someone who obviously knows nothing about the area feels the need to comment? Try the local paper if you want to know more:

There are not many job opportunities in Humboldt county. It is not populated much. There is Humboldt State College and there are some places to go off Hwy. 101, like Ferndale for antiques and gingerbread houses. Crescent City and Eureka are the two major towns but I would not live there myself.
Chico is 70 miles from Sacramento which is the capitol and has a vibrant college life. Humboldt is rather depressed economically and is boring and has no atmosphere. It is on the north coast and gets all the rain. Chico, on the other hand, is very hot in the summer and cold in the winter, since it is far from the coast. But it is a nice town.
Both are politically conservative.
