My Dad retired there. It’s a growing city, but it’s still pretty rural. It’s close to the mountains…but he does have to come to Sacramento for a lot of things…like events and medical stuff. Not much going on up there other that community events. There’s a Walmart…and there are some outlets close by if you like shopping. He likes it there, but if you are a young person, research some more.

Redding is ok if you like backwards politics and hot weather. It perfect for retirement, but lousy if you have to find work and support a family. As someone raised in Reading I left Redding anat the age of 19 and have not lived there since.
Redding is big on high school sports. There is a red neck mentality in Redding so if you are a liberal you won’t be too confortable in Redding. Even though people can be friendly, you might find that they are friendly because they want something, so beware of who you mix with. There is a high meth problem in Redding. The homeless in Redding are miserable and the sheriffs department can be very fascist toward people that look like they have no money. There is a large retirement community in Redding.. most of the retired are either from the bay area or Los Angeles and they carry their habits from Los Angeles and the bay area. Very poor tippers and very demanding and impolite for service. Redding dies around 6pm at night so there is no night life unless you want to Hang out at the one and only casino…public transportation sucks the last bus travels at 7pm.. no major concerts. No professional sports. There is one movie theater for the whole city and county so it is often crowded

I worked in Redding 2006-2009 and lived in Shingletown.
There are friendly, down to earth folk in Redding.
There is also an entrenched, never gonna budge an inch, old school cowboy/rancher/ ultra conservatives that HATE anyone not just like them.
These people absolutely freak out at any improvement.
Seriously..when a stop sign was erected in a rural area east of Redding the Record Searchlight newspaper featured it as front page news. Loys of people were upset that a stop sign was …”bringing bad Bay Area values” to Shasta County.
The heat is quite formidable, people who say “but its dry heat” apperently have never stood outside in direct sun on a 105-112 f day. And yes, I have spent summers in the Mississippi Delta and Texas, I am very familar with 90-90 humidity days. Dry heat with no shade at 105+ temps will bbq you..plain and simple. Luckily there are many lakes and rivers to cool off in. There are beautiful recreation areas within 30-55 miles of Redding just know that living there is like going back in time to an America that is resisting the future with all its might.

I’m planning on moving there myself, and have gathered a ton of info through the web and people I’ve met. I used to live in California and want to move back, am now living in Texas and trying to find the perfect spot to plant myself.
I have heard that Redding is really beautiful, with mountains to the north, east and west, and large lakes in the mountains (Shasta and Whiskeytown Lakes). There are incredible waterfalls within a 30 minute drive (Burney Falls, Whiskeytown Falls), and a ski resort an hour away (Mt. Shasta Ski). And the California Coast and Redwoods are only about 2 1/2 hrs away.
Also there is the Sacramento River going right through the city, with great fishing (salmon, trout, etc) and a great new bridge going across. But I’ve also heard that the summer there are brutally hot, like 3 or four months of high 90’s and low 100’s (but they say it’s a dry heat, not as bad as the Deep South summers). During the late fall and winter it rains a lot, but nothing like Portland or Seattle in winter.
As far as the people, from those that I’ve met they seem like some of the most friendly, happy people I’ve come across. But I’ve also heard that there is a bit of a drug problem, and there are a higher rate of sex offenders there for some reason, but I’m sure if you stay out of the "wrong" neighborhoods you’ll be alright. If you move there, maybe I’ll run into you! Good luck and God Bless!
