One of the Redwoods is native to China. They used to be widespread over most of North America. In recent geological history, the usual species that you think of when you hear redwood were confined to northern California and maybe Oregon. Giant Sequoias live in the Sierras. None have lived naturally in Michigan in recent times since the last Ice age at least. It has probably been many tens of millions of years since they lived there.
