Where to go on vacation in Northern California in the end of July?
am trying to save money (don’t want to use credit cards) to take my husband out for his 30th bday for the week. We live in San Diego, CA and I DO NOT want to stay in southern California for his birthday since its a big one. I would prefer to stay in California but I am open to anything. My husbands outgoing loves the outdoors but I would like it some what romantic. Please give good places to go to and what there is to do there, stay and eat. Thank you for all your suggestions

Yosemite National Park is nice for couples. Rustic accommodations are cheap, but book now for the summer.
Lake Tahoe has dramatic beauty, great daytime outdoor action, and great indoor nighttime action, gaming and entertainment. (My personal choice)
San Francisco, no need to explain.
Monterrey is very romantic and lots to do in the area, from the quaint charm of Carmel, the aquarium, cannery row, to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk for salt water taffy and the Big Dipper coaster.
Napa Valley is built for couples, beautiful, romantic, and wine-soaked.
Coastal places can be very romantic and offer lots of outdoor activities. Big Sur is spectacular, the Redwoods are stunning (but really far from San Diego and civilization).
Once you choose a destination, the lodgings, dining and activities are easier to narrow down.
