Where are good short drives to Nor Cal?
I live in Portland Oregon and my mom wants to spend no more then 8 hours driving to our summer vacation. I would like to get sun this summer as in go to So Cal but obviously that’s out of the question. She wants to go to some place up by Seattle in a rain forest, which would be cool only there is NOTHING there!! Im looking for some sunny places in Northern California that would accommodate both my mother and myself’s requirements. I want a beach with sun and shopping and she wants a short car ride. We have driven to Reno NV in a day and I wouldn’t mind doing that again. She would want to do this in a weekend. That means leaving either thursday night after work or early friday morning, and leaving either monday or sunday afternoon.

Just my personal taste here, but I would take a nice leisurely trip down the 101 to San Francisco. You can go from Portland to SF on I5 in about 9-10 hours, but boring !
Take the 101, stop about half-way, maybe Eureka or something, and spend the night in a nice little Bed and Breakfast. They have a ton of them and I am sure it is something your mom would appreciate. Then continue on down to SF. There is a ton to do in SF, actually way too much for just one weekend đŸ™‚ But research their tourism guide and pick the things you want to do. Fisherman’s Wharf is always a place I love to go !
I5 for the fast boring route, 101 for the scenery and enjoyment.
You could always go to Tahoe instead of Reno also, just a little longer drive ( not much though.)
Enjoy !
