My Mom and Dad were stationed in San Diego in 1961 how much has it changed?
Kirkuk Since this is where they basically spent their honeymoon–straight there from the wedding, Dad is real nostalgic about San Diego, particularly Old Town. He wants to visit next month but Mom is afraid it won’t be how he remembers. Anyone know how it was then versus now? The plan–from State of Washington to Northern California (were we live) and one or two days in San Diego. Dad also thinks prices should be the same as they were in 1970.

I’m sure they can find places that haven’t changed that much. Coronado (down town) is probably about the same. I think Old town is somewhat unchanged.
Oh my gosh things are definetly not the same! It kind of reminds me of that Disney cartoon with the little house in the country and the city builds around it.
Since the 1960s we’ve built a 1,000 acre campus, built a huge shopping center called Mission Valley Shopping, we built SeaWorld, Sports Arena is built a place that host concerts and causes a ton of traffic, of coarse we also built Qualcomm our football stadium, we opened a bridge that goes to the Coronado island, open a space theater, haha we opened a nude beach, another mall opens in La Jolla, we opened an international convention center, we build another university in San Marcos, we open Lego Land, and I’m not sure by how much but the population has doubled. actual population is between 450,000-600,000 people more than what was here in the 60s.
As far as old town goes they did do some archeological stuff that dug up old ruins in the early 70s I think. But all of old town is full and crowded wall to wall with restaurants.
As they say "you can never go home again" but even with all the changes I think San Diego is beautiful and I wouldn’t live here if it wasn’t. As long as they don’t expect too much from us I think they’ll still be happy because it will be romantic never the less to return to a place you once were together.
Oh and a a modest hotel will be 80 a night. You should be able to find something in for this price depending on the time of year they’re coming.
